Hands down an amazing song, from performance, vocal range, composition and engineering. White Hotel, also an amazing, darker track. Grazie Spectres.

Yep. Another climate disaster prophecy that turned out to be a massive dud.

It spurred South Africans into ditching CFC propelled aerosols and fridges. We had massive mine dumps in the Vaal Triangle which were full of arsenic which eventually poisoned the water table - the water pumped up from boreholes to feed gardens and golf courses was so full of acid that it burned the plants on contact. Mining companies didn't look after the dumps and the slimes dams which lead to the Merriespruit disaster - so many people died in that poisonous mud. It was terrible. Every year when the August winds came, you couldn't go outside - yellow dust was everywhere and it made your eyes, skin and nose burn. This song did not fall on deaf ears.

This song also came out at a time when South Africa was suffering one of the worst droughts they had ever known. Farmers killed themselves because they could do nothing but watch their stock starve to death. One of my neighbours had to shoot all his sheep - 5 generations of the family had worked that farm and bred those sheep - and then he shot his wife, kids and then himself. People in the cities cut their grass and bagged it up to take to farmers. I remember my aunt doing her nut because I had let 3 stray cows into her garden, but in the end she let them stay. People were so depressed and desperate. Every night there were prayers at the local churches. We put plastic bags in the toilet to catch our poop so that we didn't have to use precious water to flush it away. Everyone bathed in the same water - and some only washed what was necessary. And then when the drought broke, it rained for 2 months. I don't mean that it rained a bit every day - it rained 24/7 for 2 straight months. In that time all our dams filled and overflowed. The veldt sprang back to life and everyone thanked God.

@@jozigirl7114 Yes, the Vaal triangle area is and was severely polluted. That is a bad thing, and I am completely against pollution. But the discussion is about acid rain and climate change, not pollution in general. And drought has been a common occurrence in the sub-tropical climate of Southern Africa for centuries. That has little to do, once again, with acid rain. The cause of environmentalism, unfortunately, regularly gets hijacked for political gain by socialists, who embellish and pollute it with pseudo-scientific nonsense.

Mind you that the Namib desert, in neighbouring Namibia, is the most ancient desert in the world. So drought in the region predates human pollution.

The best South African written song of the late 80s/90s, bar none. Weird to see a video after all this time, as I had no idea one was made.

I'm sorry for your loss. I never met your mother. I'd have loved nothing more than to collaborate with her. Teddy Bear was/IS genius. Her vocals, the ability to change between Teddy bear and White Hotel. I'd like with your permission to cover White Hotel. No point in covering Teddy bear as its perfection.
