Thanks so much for this video 2 years ago. Still useful today. I have two questions. 1) Since the BUI is essentially a transfer switch, shouldn't I be able to plug my EV (that's supports V2L via a transfer switch) to serve as the generator in this setup to work when the power is out when solar is insufficient (e.g. at night)? 2) How can the BUI be used to only power a subset of loads like charging the EV which can turn around and supply power to the house? I'm looking at setting up a poor man's V2G for power outages only.

Hi Victor! You are right. Until the inverters use their onboard small batteries and either do some magic to turn the optimizers back on or form a small micro grid to turn the optimizers back on…. Daneyand - loved this video!! I plan on starting off with just the BUI myself and adding on batteries later. Just a note - I found a vague reference in some SE video that the BBC series inverter (which I believe you have) do not support the SE battery, only LG Chem. So don't go buy one until you confirm. My source - see kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKnLdpuEjbCLmMk Also have you tried a generator backup mode, does the BUI work well with a generator?

Hmmmm, interesting. I’ve since added an LG 16KW battery and it’s been working great. I do have one regret, though, I wish I had a larger over sized inverter for the panels serving the house. The reason why is I have the inverter placed in my basement utility room and when the sun is screaming and filling up those panels, the inverter can get a little buzzy. I would rather it be completely silent. My neighbor has a larger inverter compared to the number of panels feeding it, and his inverter never makes a sound. So just food for thought.

The BUI will act as a temporary grid for the inverter during power outage right?
@daneyand Жыл бұрын
Not quite, the BUI only disconnect your house from the grid. Once disconnected the inverters have a 9 volt battery that powers the electronics and enables the inverters to start and create a micro grid. Up to three inverters can contribute per system.

So you have the BUI connected to the Inverter. Power comes from meter to BUI. Output of BUI is main panel. No battery or generator attached? What settings do you have to change for the inverter to stay online with panel production? I thought the inverter would die at loss of grid? I am putting a battery on mine as well as a generator, but curious how you made this happen.
@daneyand2 жыл бұрын
It's so easy. You literally set up the inverter the same way as if you had a battery. So that means, Flipping the power button to P for a second. Connecting to the WIFI on the inverter. Then navigating to the commissioning webpage with a browser - 172.16.0.1 Then just follow the steps laid out in the manual to enable "backup mode". You don't even need the manual. it's pretty easy to guess how to do it. Perhaps I should do a quick video? Also, I have since purchased an LG RESU 16h battery. The system works great!

@daneyand2 жыл бұрын
They are talking a disconnect outside near your main power meter. They are required in most states and part of code. Most of them can be locked on or off. Does that help?

@daneyand2 жыл бұрын
No it does not. Outside of the house there is a disconnect that you are talking about. It's right next to the meter for the power company or first responders to but the solar power. The disconnect switch sits between the AC output of the inverter and the input to the BUI in my case. If there is no BUI it would sit between the output of the inverter and the main breaker panel.

@@daneyand What if I have two SolarEdge inverters feeding into my SolarEdge Backup Interface? Any idea what type of AC disconnect would I need then? @daneyand2 жыл бұрын
Now that I’ve put a battery in the system I’d say the transfer is about a second or so. I actually like the longer transfer. It’s long enough for some big loads in the house(computer) to turn off and stay off while on backup power. Other systems are supposedly instantaneous. Which would not be ideal for me. Cheers!

Did you install the back up interface yourself? Did you need to reprogram the inverter? I have a SE battery enabled inverter. The 7600 I think. I purchased a battery bank but Solar edge will not provide any information on how to make the connection and all of their local reps declined the project including the original installer. Any ideas how I can make the connection?
@daneyand2 жыл бұрын
Hey JB. Well, I guess I have a clue. However, my very excellent installer here did the work for me. And recently I purchased a battery that is working spot on. So let's give this a go... First off you need a compatible battery, LG RESU or SolarEdge's own batteries are the only two that will work. You need to hook the +, - and ground from the battery to the SE inverter battery terminals using whatever AWG wire it recommends in the manuals. Then you must connect the RS-485 communication wires from the battery to the inverter, use ethernet wire for this. There is clear documentation in the battery manual and the SolarEdge manual on how to do this. After that you need to go into SE inverter setup menu by either using the SetApp phone app or just hooking your laptop up the the inverter wifi and pointing a browser to it's web server address => 172.16.0.1, I think. Go through the menu to communication or something, drill into the RS-485 menu and click add battery. It will find it and add it. Then you need to do a battery self test. It will go through a test, charge and discharge cycle and then you are good to set the battery to whatever mode you want in the power menu, such as Maximum Self Consumption or other modes of using the battery. I set ours so far to drain the battery at night to 70% and recharge during the day... LG batteries need to be at a specific firmware I think, and SE pushes the firmware to the batteries -> you may need to call them to get them to do this if it isn't set already. Also, to activate the LG warranty you need to be a certified battery installer. You can take a free test on their website to become a certified self installer and away you go. Is that enough detail to point you in the right direction? Though my installer did most of this, I learned as I looked over their shoulder and googled the rest just to understand how the system works. Cheers!
@dunerider450f2 жыл бұрын
@@daneyand Thank you for this, It sounds pretty straightforward. Unfortunately I didn’t purchase a LG or SE battery. I was under the impression that this inverter would work with a traditional battery bank. I guess my next step is to call solaredge again and confirm this information. 😁✌🏼
@daneyand2 жыл бұрын
No, my installer did the entire installation. I did the inverter reprogramming. To do that, flip the power button to P for a second. Connect to the WIFI on the inverter. Then navigate to the commissioning webpage with a browser - 172.16.0.1... Follow the manual or just poke around and enable the "backup mode". You'll have two options. Something like "maximum self consumption" or "backup only". The first tries to use some % of the battery before going back to the grid. The second uses all capacity in the battery for power out situations. SE only supports the batteries they support. Which is LG and their own. The reason being is that the battery has a BMS, battery management system, that tracks health, age, use, etc and tries to keep the cells alive by doing all sorts of things. This BMS talks to the SE inverter via RS485 bus. If they don't talk, they don't know about each other and it will not configure the battery for use.
