I don't see how a fully automatic turntable keeps you from dropping the record. But I am with you with at least some automatic features. Really, having salvaged and repaired several vintage turntables which I currently own: if I had to choose any set of features, all that I really need is a toned arm lifting lever that gently sets the needle down and auto-stop where the tone arm lifts at the end and the record stops. I have to get up and walk to the turntable to flip the record anyway. It only takes one second to move the tone arm out of the way to flip the record over. However, when the auto return functions stopped working on some of my turntables, It took a lot more work to get them going again and then I didn't even have the auto stop function until then. If turntable is left for a long time, if you were automatic features there are means that there are many fewer places where the lubrication has turned to glue. It's much easier to clean or two spots rather than an entire, complicated cam and lever system (I'll just so you don't have to spend the one second pushing the tone arm back before the next record). I totally agree with everything else you said though 🙂

I do not want to be reliant on the almighty and pervasive computers and downloads for music, besides your download is only as good as the original recording which with older music means tape, yes you can tickle it with digital remastering but then it's not original is it? Now some do that's fine but I like something tangible, something I can hold in my grasp. I am of the older generation, did you guess?

What do you use to clean the record and stylus before play? Thank you.
@Lancaster_Hi-Fi3 күн бұрын
For the record, carbon fiber brush. Makers often claim they're "antistatic"; ha! For the stylus, either the small brush that comes with the cartridge or stylus or a densely, finely bristled brush that I got back in the 80's. I also use a stylus cleaning solution sold by Audiotechnica. I got mine in the 80's, but they still sell it.

I built my amp to do well in both settings. I can switch from pentode to triode and apply negative feedback on the fly. I usullay find mysel using pentode with feedback 90% of the time. But when I sit down for some special jazz and vocal related stuff triode is where I go to. It sounds livelier then.
@Lancaster_Hi-Fi3 күн бұрын
My experience is similar. I occasionally think to try out triode mode. I have to actually turn off the amp to make the switch because of the high DC voltage. I found out the hard way by quickly ruining a switch! I suppose I could also switch the feedback on the fly since the voltage is low, but I generally make the change with power off.

I got them not working but I was able to change the gooey belts , now they're working, still I have to order the pinch roller because they hardened. . Yes, and I'm referring to slewing distortion, which is when the slew rate can't keep up with the frequency and amplitude of the input signal.

I would like a honest opinion. I am not an audiophile but I love the sound of vintage audio equipment. The problem is I cannot afford it. At least in the video I could hardly tell the difference. This Yamaha is discontinued but their later model 303BL is probably equivalent. Will I be wrong to buy the Yamaha.
@Lancaster_Hi-Fi3 күн бұрын
Yamaha makes good stuff, and the variable loudness control is nice. It allows control over the perceived "fullness" of the sound. The modern units aren't very pretty, especially on the budget end, and the outer construction appears flimsy, but the innards are well built.

Streaming is convenient, but there's nothing about streaming that compares emotionally to watching the damped door of my cassette deck open, inserting a CD into the tray, or putting a record on the turntable. That's why the popularity of physical media is on the upswing. I've owned a handful of CD players, but my favorite is the NAD 5000 I bought new in (I think) 1990. It's still box stock, and it won't play SACDs or DVD Audio (I have a modified Samsung DVD-HD950 for that), but it sure does a nice job with basic CDs, and as a transport with my Audio Alchemy DDE v1.0, the music is damn near alive.

why such small value filter caps in the power supply ?
@Lancaster_Hi-FiКүн бұрын
If the capacitor adjacent to the rectifier is too big, the rectifier will fry. Tube rectifiers are less tolerant of big current spikes than solid state. That doesn't explain small values after the choke.

I was wondering why no other techs here on yt talks about it. There are a few issues to consider: 1. Your phone probably weights more than a vinyl LP, it slows down the speed of the platter 2. Your phone isn't calibrated like all other phones 3. Measuring without tracking load of the record changes the speed of your TT 4. The Pioneer Pl-630(I have the same model here) is a descent TT and it's constantly measuring the speed of the platter and compensates the torque load with sensors even with your phone on top. Lower end TT does any kind of compensations. 5. Better use a frequency counter instead of the Fluke, because the most scopes struggles with dirt in grooves. Frequency counters do a better job on filtering out frequency spikes. 6. Laphroaig select is a good choice. SLÀINTE MHATH

Both are fantastic.

@Lancaster_Hi-Fi13 күн бұрын

@jimmyjudha84248 күн бұрын
@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi with FFT you can find harmonic distortion. After find FFT the ratio between second peak and first peak is a second harmonic percentage and so on. Better to make ratio between output and input first and give it to FFT to emphasize the analysis. You make step frequency scan you can plot distortion at any point. recording waveform allow this analysis. You might use cheap oscilloscope tap on speaker and input jack then save waveform in a flashdrive. I have an Idea. If you have VCO you can supply stairs case voltage to it and it gives a step frequency scan. Then you don't waste time manually scan each step. If you have 4 channel oscilloscope. One channel dedicated for recording the stair case step. You can use programming code to analyze the signal by cutting each stair case step and use FFT for each step to find 2nd 3rd distortion. Programming allow you to find first second peak separately for distortion harmonic percentage calculation. The code I recommend is "octave". In the past we use variable filter with knob. 2nd box, 3 rd box with bridge rectifier at output of it are made. We tied oscillator knob and all the filter knob together. Then meter reading from each box ratio with original output with bridge rectifier is the harmonic distortion percentage. However the box is difficult to make because you have to have bandpass filter and tuning knob connect with variables inductor. Then you have to make scale of it comprehend with oscillator. The modern technology today makes it easier. Sorry if I make a very long comment.

I totally disagree. Yes there can be problems. But there are problems with all kinds of media. There are many old recordings that are only on cassette tape. I find some amazing recordings in thrift stores. And what about those underground bands that smuggled their music out of Soviet run countries back in the 80s and 90s all on cassette. They had no abilities to make cds. I love my Akai and my Nakamichi. People say they can't really tell the difference between cassettes i made from cds and the cds. It all goes according the the entire chain of electronic equipment you are using. Cassettes do not suck I have over 700 of them and still buy them when i find a good one. You must be one of those audio snob. Digital is far from perfect I don't care how much you spend on a cd player mine cost $2400 new and sounds good, but I find most cd players are a bit bright, crisp and tiring and and I have had to take them apart to get a cd out when the draw stops working. Some cd player eventually start to misread the disc and skip so they too have to have maintenance and parts for high end cd players can be hard to get. As for streaming forget it you have to depend on a good consistant wifi signal or there are drop outs or noise. My Cambridge gets squelching noises from poor signals some radio stations are unlistenable. And all services do not have the same quality and there are library limitations where you can't find the music you want to hear. So streaming can suck. I bought a bluesound node and it sucked. I couldn't get the stations I listened to on my Cambridge so I returned it. The Eversolo got great reviews so I bought one its ok gets more of the streaming radio stations but there are still a few I can't get. It sounds better than when I bought with the eq upgrade, but I already have an equalizer. Are you one of those snob that says tone controls and eqs alter the original recording and should not be used, that if it sounds bad its poor quality equipment. Besides for all of that, the bottom line is that all types of equipment has its ups and downs and buying a cassette player is its own experience and should not be written off as out dated. I am a pro analog guy. Just do your research and don't buy a cassette player that was a cheap piece of junk when it was new. There are a lot of nice decks out there. Be aware they have some age and may need some care or maintenance, but their not disposable like streamers that you don't fix just trash when they become obsolete as the new best thing comes out. I love cassettes.

When I look at the differences in the graphs that you presented extremely well I recall doing the same sort of thing with a curve when I enable DSP after doing acoustical measurements on my AV processor. When I compare the graph the new DSP curve is smoother and when I enable DSP there is a dramatic improvement in tonality and I'm wondering if just changing the curve created this change and sound or other DSP things that are going on in the background. I do hate the fact that DSP is difficult to work with because you have to re-download curves every time you make a manual change to the curve. So it's very hard to change things on the fly. I miss Tone controls but when I enable treble and bass settings it impacts the sound quality so I don't use it.

If you don't have a large collection of phonograph records I don't see the point of buying an expensive turntable new or used. Same for a CD player. If you are going to buy reissued of vinyl records that have been digitally processed why not buy the far less expensive CD? If you don't have a library of either you'd do far better to stream your music. Just my opinion.
