One of the major failings of this generator, which is well illustrated in the video, is it being a right pain in the butt when trying to start it. Mine used to take about 20 pulls before it would run. The basic problem is the level of the fuel in the fuel tank with respect to the carburettor. Because the fuel tank is mounted on the side of the unit, rather than above as most small genertors are, if the fuel level is anything but absolutely full then the internal fuel lift pump has to get fuel up to the carburettor before it will run. The lift pump is operated by crankcase pressure and one has to do multiple pulls to produce sufficient lift. If the tank is brim full then that problem is eliminated. I've done a small mod to my machine by fitting an auxillary high level priming tank made from a short length of 22mm copper tube. This primer is an airtight chamber with a screw cap. Because it is permanently higher than the carburettor, the engine starts no problem. My unit is several years old and when preparing to undertake this mod I discovered that all fuel hoses (rubber) were perished and leaking so they also required replacing.

What a wonderful chance to understand the bigger issues , as explained by a man I now recognize is not only a national treasure, but a world resource : Rob Sherwood. I got here because I wanted to set up the best weak signal 2m station I could with modest financial resources. The more I combed the specs for available transceivers, the more tweedle dee-tweedle dum I encountered over a 25-30 year span. Lots of new packages, and whistling bells, but no more meat on the plate came with the BIG price increases. Nothing explains why better than this video. As we look back now on the utter crap once sold to us ( horrid synthesizer phase noise) we will surely look back on these stagnated receivers and filthy PAs and wonder why so few stood up and squwaked. Bravo ! de W6WUH

I'm trying to pair UV-3R+ with the old Motorollas of my co-workers. I found the frequency and I can hear them, but when I transmit, their walkie-talkies are only flashing LED, without receiving my voice. What can i do?
@chrishoward9999
@chrishoward9999 Жыл бұрын
So, it sounds like the Motorola radios are configured to only receive when there is CTCSS tone (also known in the Motorola world as a PL tone). You need to find out what that tone is, and then set your radio to send this tone when you transmit. You can do this by setting the TXcode (menu item 02). If you look at my video UV-3R Mark 1 Quick Start Guide you can see how to do this..

The trick is not to just try and minimise your separation distances, but to perform calculations for the worse case scenarios. That way you can know your maximum operating EMF. As for proving that you don't use 100w to Mr OFCOM when he turns up at your door, they can't prove that Foundation licensees are operating at 10w with their 100w capable radio. I have a linear in my shack, but I never use it.. Mr OFCOM will have to take my word for it (It's not wired up anyway). so there is a matter of common sense to be used here.. This is not an exercise in absolutes. The aim of OFCOM is for people to pay attention to their EMF fields and to ensure that you mitigate risk against exposure to the public. Enforcement is going to be an issue for OFCOM, but if their attention is drawn to your installation and they turn up to inspect it, you will need to be able to demonstrate you have performed an assessment and have some documentary evidence. If you think you can get away with doing nothing, it is a bit like driving your car without an MOT.. are you going to risk it? Obviously nothing happens until you get caught, but the risk is always there. The RSGB calculator also has a 'boresite' option which allows you to input an attenuation level based on the transmission plain of an aerial.(The transmission lobe tends to be at the end of the aerial and there is a reduced EMF below that). It provides a more accurate assessment of Horzontal Yagi's. You can also calculate the gain of your own aerial and input that as a custom figure, however, if you have a doublet bent around the garden, modelling will note help you, you might as well just use the figures for a dipole. Plan for the worst, know your limitations and document what you do to operate with in the limitations, and you should be good to go!

Hi Dave, thank you very much for your comments much of what I agree with ! Fair comments. My own take is that if radio amateurs go through the process and document they put themselves in a much much better position than if they couldn't be "bovered" or wish to take issue with Ofcom (good luck with them on the latter). Also agree on your comment on planning for the worst, if it good on that then all is fine. 73 Leslie g0cib

I purchased one of these for power outages we have during storms and the generator is definitely not without problems. The noise level is abhorrent which can be heard from the video. A MUCH bigger problem is using the generator with devices that suck an awful lot of amperes when plugged in. This is called "inrush current". My 125W Whirlpool freezer either stops the generator or refuses to start (due to voltage drop for a few hundred milliseconds). What I have had to do is do a "hill start" with the fridge plugging it in before starting the generator. The generator starts with a bit of a cough but in most cases, the freezer starts and the generator keeps running. The freezer taking 10% of what the generator has to offer (1200W) you would think that you can plug in a laptop power supply (60W). Those devices, however, have a tendency to power up taking a huge inrush current as well (quite a surprise). So do the same you did with the fridge (the "jump-start"). Why the laptop power supply works like this may be due to some capacitor loading or some phenomenon with the transformer circuitry. The compressors in cheap/mid-price/old freezers and fridges are piston based (like Watt's steam engine) and getting them run the first stroke requires a lot more power than keeping them running. Some do have a "soft start" but I have not seen one so far. So if you are planning to buy a generator to run a freezer or a fridge you should consider purchasing a more powerful alternative. Anyhow, both of the problems I described are very common and you will find lots of discussions by Googling "inrush current inverter", for example.
