Hi there. While i am still searching for the fault in my DH5U (see my old comment on this video below), I managed to get a half broken DT100U. This is almost the same as the DH5U just with an ATSC receiver build in. They also share the same service manual. The device had blown capacitors on the secondary power supply. It would display the error message "Error 303, Video Signal not Found for this program". Only for digital tapes. Analog does always work. "Easy fix", or so I thought. I repaired the obvious (all electrolytic capacitors on the two power supply boards) and also the ones on the PRE/REC amplifier board. Since I did this to the DH5U before, it was almost a routine by now. Sadly, that did not fix the issue (black screen and error message 303). The following things are interesting though: When I use Fast Forward or Rewind, the picture search will always work fine for the HD playback! Also I noticed, that when you let the machine record for a while, the problem disappears for most of the time for many hours to come! The machine will work and play HD fine and eventually, the error symptoms will slowly reapear. At first the playback of HD content will start to freeze frame, but not the normal "drop out" like freeze, but a permanent freeze, until you stop&restart the tape. The interval between the freeze frame and stop&start cyles of the tape will get smaller and smaller until playback will run for only a few seconds and then HD digital playback will fail completely with error message 303 (again). I noticed, that in this case, digital SD footage still works for some time longer until that will fail also. After this, LS3 mode footage might still be playable, until it will also fail to error 303. --> When I hit record for a few seconds or minutes, functionality will be restored for (most of the time) another few hours of operation. I even recapped the digital boards SMD electrolytic capacitors as last resort but it did not help either. Voltage of the power supply looks to be well inside the voltage range, the service manual tells me. What I could not check was voltage ripple. Need a new scope. When the machine is working, It will play tapes very good with basically no dropouts, so mechanically it _seems_ to be intact. So alignment seems to be ok. The good thing is, that I can do most replacement/repair work quite well in my opinion. All this work and I still managed not to damage any of the devices further. But my theoretical knowledge of this digital VCR seems to be limited. Do you have any idea what I could check? This time, I think the digital board with the decoder is working fine, since even in error case, decoding still works somewhat (when tape is fast forwarded for example). Also, it does not seem to depend on temperature. Sadly, the digital board of this thing and the DH5U are not 100% interchangeable. The power supply on the DH5u is also missing a few parts (because it does not have the ATSC tuner). So, interchanging parts between the two and build one working machine is not that easy. Only drive mechanism, PRE/REC and system board seem to be 100% equal. So, If you have any idea what I could check with the symptoms described above, I would be very happy :-)

ABC aired "What's Up Doc" twice (once on January 23, 1976 and again on December 17, 1976). This definitely has to be the *January 23, 1976* airing judging by the audio quality before the network updated its audio system later that same year.

This is recorded on *May 5, 1977* as part of a tornado outbreak in the Springfield, Illinois area. On that day, several tornadoes slammed through the towns of Atlanta, Waynesville, Danvers, McLean, Shirley, and New Holland. Only two people suffered injuries, and dozens of homes (including two machine sheds and a Sunoco Service Station near Interstate 55) were destroyed.

Did they really need to put the scrolling text on the top AND bottom? One or the other, please. Nonetheless, really cool find. WTVD were still using a variation of this slide in the late 1980s. BTW, have you encountered any other EBS Tests so far, or is this your only one to date? Also, really enjoyed that lost ABC Password episode you recovered earlier this year. That series was really badly wiped by the network and only seven complete episodes are currently available. If you find any other game shows on these tapes, do be sure to share them, as you might uncover some lost rarities. 😀

It seems like WTVD used this same background for their EBS tests, as evidenced from another upload featuring a test from 1988. Not sure why they had to put the scrolling text at both the top and bottom, though.

Yes, the owner left everything intact! Doing quick tests, there were 7 out of the 11 tapes from the lot that are recoverable (the rest had bad reception, making them practically unwatchable), so far have one of them digitized.

Hello again, great video! I just commented on another video of yours. Just noticed, that you are also working on the DH5U as well. That is great beause I am doing the same right now. My machine has gotten new capacitors on the primary and secondary power supply PCBs and I also did the pre amp board. I have an extremely strange issue with my unit that I am trying to fix since almost a year now. I works perfectly very often, but it tends to fail from time to time to display D-Theater correctly. I do not mean the usual drops outs (blocks) but completely going from perfect playback to error message "Error 200" "Cannot decode Audio or Video. Use settop box." during playback. This is not the infamous "Error 201: calibrating ..." issue. When I get the error, it tends to stay for minutes or even hours! After some time, it will go away. May also be minutes or hours. Does not depend on temperature as far as I can see. I have not been able to find a single person who has gotten the same isse since then. VHS/SVHS playback is always perfect. Do you have any ideas?
@VideoStore64
@VideoStore64 Ай бұрын
Hmm, that is a very odd one; I've never heard of that one myself. Since playback is otherwise not affected, the tape path is likely good. If recapping the digital board does not fix the issue, then I would imagine it's a deeper fault in your unit (e.g., an intermittent problem with an IC). Sorry I could not be of more help.
@nihilyst
@nihilyst Ай бұрын
@@VideoStore64 Yes indeed, that is my fear, that it is ultimately one of the not replaceable and BGA soldered ICs on the digital board. I even had the digital board sent to a (trustable) company, that does BGA reballing. They apparently are able to do an x-ray before they actually reball and I had them check my BGA ICs and they actually did not find a fault in the solder connections (which also is good in a way). So they did no reballing which would also be a great risk.. I even raplaced one of the RAM chips on the board as a last resort as they are known to fail over time. I managed not to damage the PCB further (can always happen when you are getting deep into it) but it also didn´t help either 🙂. So the RAM ws not at fault. I also noticed that those BGAs tend to run really hot. I placed passive cooling on mine but that may be to late for my VCR. Might be a good thing to cool them a bit better than JVC did. But still, thank you for your answer. In a way it is good to know that this might be a rare problem on these machines, and not a common, fatal fault.

Hello, great video. Nice to see some other D-VHS enthusiasts out there. I have worked a lot on these units the last two years and may have something else you might find interesting: the capacitors on the PRE/REC board very often tend to go bad. And they die slowly. In most cases, VHS/SVHS playback is not affected but the digital playback will deteriorate over time (show more and more dropouts). I had exactly the same sympthoms as your unit shows on one of mine. Some tapes play back well, some do not. I don't think the cassettes are necessarily the root cause for your drop outs. I think that some cassettes simply had a slightly weaker signal strength when they were produced. And these tend to highlight a recorders' weaknesses more. I replaced all the capacitors on the preamp board on a DH40000U, and now my DH40000 plays ALL cassettes I own almost 100% error-free. Also the previously faulty cassettes. In my opinion, the DH30000U (which is even older) may well have the same problem. Another problem is the ground connections from the preamplifier PCB to its metal housing. These break very easily and tend to tear the pad off the circuit board. Sometimes it is barely visible. You have to meticulously restore this connection, all three of them. I once had one that was broken and subsequently severe drop outs on all cassettes. From just a tiny crack in the solder. Of course I can't know 100%. Of course, it could be that your recorders are perfectly fine and they are really badly worn cassettes. But I was also able to see a few drop outs on the cassette that was declared good in your video and I actually had the experience that the devices, when 100% OK, actually only show very few drop outs. Regardless, it's great to see that others are also engaging with this obscure format. I myself have had a few problems finding repair tips for these devices on the internet. Nice that you share your experiences here. Since it is so difficult to get information, I am also sharing my experiences here. 🙂

Thanks for the comment! That is a good point to watch out of the ground connection on the shielding for the digital preamp board; on this one, I had noticed some cracks around the joint before working on it.
