unfortunately the horse´s trotter special effects were crudely bodged. but it´s a greatly atmospheric film, with super character actors and props and Wheatley nonsense

This is what I love about the older films-mood, atmosphere and suspense. The tension ratchets up to almost unbearable levels-love it.

Edgar Allen Poe tale…The Conqueror Worm, implying that after we die and are buried, the worms eventually consume us in the grave. Vincent Price was at his most evil in this movie!

Any uber fans out there who can explain who these people are in the portraits? Madeline Usher gives us the "tour" of her ancestors in the crypt - going back three generations - and none of them are these people here. Because of the style of clothing in the portraits as well as the time period that this story was written in, the assumption is that these people in the portraits were either contemporaries of Roderick and Madeline, or more reasonable, are two parents with three sons - none of whom are in the living Ushers' direct line. When I first saw this film (1966) as a kid, I remember thinking back, "Where's Edward Usher?"

What a horrible way to die. To think that this happened all over England, Wales, Scotland and the rest of Europe. They thought that witches were responsible for plaques, storms, diseases, etc... which is why the masses would scream, "burn witch burn!"
