3 Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam. 4 Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea: et a peccato meo munda me. 5 Quoniam iniquitatem meam ego cognosco: et peccatum meum contra me est semper. 9 Asperges me hysopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. 10 Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam: et exsultabunt ossa humiliata. 11 Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis: et omnes iniquitates meas dele. 12 Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. 13 Ne proiicias me a facie tua: et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. 14 Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui: et spiritu principali confirma me. 15 Docebo iniquos vias tuas: et impii ad te convertentur. 16 Libera me de sanguinibus, Deus, Deus salutis meae: et exsultabit lingua mea justitiam tuam. 17 Domine, labia mea aperies: et os meum annuntiabit laudem tuam.

Psalm 51 speaks of the sorrowful King David asking God forgiveness after committing adultery with Bathsheba, Uriah's wife and one of David's faithful warriors. The opening line: "Miserere mei Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam", Have mercy on me, O God, according to your great mercy....Where David cries to God for forgiveness and mercy! Just a glorious prayer and song by Gregorio Allegri!

I saw this specific recording of this 'psalm/song' for the fist time on (Dutch) television in early spring 1995. It was also available on CD then. Ik didn't know the song by then and bought the CD, so special and beautiful.

Gracias

The story is that this work was prohibited from being performed outside of the Sistine Chapel. Mozart heard it there, memorized it, wrote it down, & shared it with the world.
@agnusdechristus752224 күн бұрын
@elijah8867 @puddysue It was prohibited because it's Composer, a Priest called Gregorio Allegri, was the resident Composer at the Vatican when he was inspired to write it. The Vatican owned the Copyright. That's the reason for the restriction. Mozart was another Catholic Composer who mentioned in his letters that he was sent the music from Our Lord. He stated in one letter that he "heard" music as though already written and he simply notated it. Vivaldi was also a Priest as was Tomas Luis Victoria and Monteverdi. There were other extremely great Priest Composers

Rumor has it that Mozart, when he heard this, rushed home and, from memory, wrote it down in its entirety. It's either just a legend or he had a mind for music beyond our ken.
