Just turned 45, Blue Belt, been training for 4 yrs. I feel like i'm causing myself to not get better. When I feel like someone is getting the better of me, I tend to abort my plan (of trying new offensive attacks) and default to defense that I know will work to stop them. I know I need to drop the ego and keep working on trying new stuff to better my offense, but it's tough to remember that in the moment. And oddly, on the flip side of that idea, when someone newer than me catches me with something or hits something new they've been working on, I'm super happy for them and I have no problem taping.

As a brown belt it now baffles me why there's so much around trying to get belts as fast as you can. The longer it takes at each belt the better. Just concentrate on learning and getting better. Id happily go back and have an extra year or so each at every belt

1.5 years to get to blue and I felt it was a grind from time to time. I had a huge hangup getting my athleticism out of the way. I don’t mean spastic strength. It was a whole stripe that I only focused on technique and stopping myself whenever I wasn’t. Another hang up was two or three months of staph management when I was not rolling. What I did do was show up consistently, talk to professors, stayed after to listen to others questions, help clean always. I did also get some hard injuries where I could still roll but I had to not use my left hand for a while, or wear wrestling shoes on my one foot from a broken toe. 38 starting Jits was fun and to late to say but I wish I started in the single digits. I am continuing to do the same amount of Jits but I added in Muay Thai.

I just want to learn some BJJ fundamentals for self-defence. I can box, but I don't know what to do on the ground. I looked into BJJ a year ago, but didn't start because I read about the damage it can do due to injury. I know from personal experience that tendon injuries are a nightmare. I have a job and responsibilities at home, as we all do. I can't really afford to be constantly messed up. I'm not exactly a spring chicken now either ( way past my 20s), so I want to find a balance and learn this skill to a solid fundamental level, but at the same time look after my body and not take any unnecessary risks. I'll be joining an MMA gym soon, so I'll see how it goes.

I've been at it for just under a year. I know it's not long, but I'm watching others progress faster. I think my main issues are a slight fear of failure and repeating mistakes. I'd also add that I'm not aggressive at all. It's been my biggest hurdle, i think. I never played contact sports or wrestling or other things I noticed. Others did, so at 43, I have a deep hole to dig myself out of. If i ever can.

I started this past November a month after turning 40. I just got my first stripe yesterday. All of my existing injuries from my past obviously show up, but the new one is the hands. The injuries to fingers is incredible. I just started wrapping as a slight defense against the grip breaks. I find that grip breaks are the most pain causing events as an older guy. I have to spend a lot of time letting them recover before I can train again. When I get a good grip, It's an incredible experience... I can laugh at anyone trying to break me loose. When I have to roll several times and get my 5th, 6th, 7th good grip and roll with 15 year olds repeatedly. I shift to stopping myself from striking. It's super frustrating for me because I don't want to be a bad partner, but on the other hand it really makes me seethe that I could throw a punch or elbow and end the awful feeling my opponent is inflicting

Ive nailed techniques weeks after they were taught because even when you start in the "position of the day" it isnt an organic environment for you to apply it. For example it isnt until you get to de la riva that you learn that specific transition to slx that leads to sweep that leads to dope mount so on and so forth. Give yourself time to become familiar in positions where youve learned from

Another banger guys! For me frustration comes from a lack of *perceived* progress. Sometimes I'm not giving something my all, but oftentimes I'm actually frustrated because my perception is skewed... I'm fixated on the wrong metrics. Tracking the micro-improvements on day to day inputs that push the needle forward, rather than lagging indicators like hefty goals, helps me stave off impatience and stay the course. Sometimes when things feel really tough I break those inputs down into even smaller inputs, and reduce the friction around completing them as much as possible. All of this is a wanky way of re-stating a wisdom humans have intuitively known for thousands of years... "trust the process"!

Those nights losing sleep from stiffness and pain suck. I had to take 6 years off the mats.. restarting in my 40s I had lots of stiff necks, and tons of pain for about one year after returning to the BJJ mat. The past 3 months I've been doing do 2-4 hours a week of medium to hard rolling open mat, something my body could not handle 6 years ago. To keep my body from being in pain all the time I do hours of recovery and conditioning each day, including: Yoga, Qigong, Gongfu, light weights, and isometric exercises. I've hit a stride where my body can take a lot of punishment, but recover almost like I was 20 again. In addition my lifestyle, diet, mindset, etc are much different than 6 years prior.

Success in one area can often transfer to all areas. Mindset of the successful carries over. Suffering for future gain. Identifying and adapting to patterns/trends. Workload required to develop. Work on a successful business transfers across working on developing successful jitz skillset. Works for me. The mindset and taking advantage of innate physical/mental advantages sets those who succeed from those who don't. Luck too, but focus and work capacity is something we are not born with. JT has some very socialist takes on the world. Who would have thought?
