What can I say? Being a Colorado native and a rail fan, I have ridden on, driven on, driven along side of, hiked along, nearly all of the right of ways in this film. However, seeing footage of actual use was very exciting.

The railroad is not shutting down. The D&S basically converted all of their operating steam locomotives from coal to oil firing to reduce the risk of wild fires, as the summers are getting dryer out there.

I understand that the reason they are switching from coal to oil is because of the coal fires that occasionally occur due to cinders coming up out of the engine and landing in the brush along the track route. Is this true? It makes sense.

That is a lonesome whistle right there. I don’t know why it is, but when you see trains in the old war movies, asian and European whistles are just high pitch screams. Whistles from USA trains are deep and rich sounding.
