So I started reading this book in winter of 2024 after I watched the first few episodes of the HBO series. I was hooked and when I realized the series is based of a book I was driven to read the book first. I love the book, it’s a great read. I haven’t yet watched the movie but it’s on my list!

I would only read this to see how it relates to an innocent girl whose parents didn’t allow her to even talk to, much less marry, her first, passionate, pure, understanding, close, love with whom she always dreamed she would "rescue the third world." (Her parents saw him (and not her, as she felt) as part of that world, thus the rejection.) I started this book but may nix it if it really is too much about abuse by her family and "soap operas," lol.

I've never made reading goals, I've always just read so much that it would feel weird being like "ah, yes, I need to read x number of books this year" and I'm a mood reader and so my "TBR" is like a vague list of want to read books that if I'm feeling really indecisive at the library and I see a book on that list, I'll choose. I suppose I have a vague reading goal of reading more classics but I don't know.

This book is amazing. I’ve listened to it twice already. It sucks to think he was sent against his will, but let’s face it, he was destined to go. The fact that he did so much without his crew even waking up from coma is impressive. And not only was he the first to meet Astrophage, but first to meet every other alien life!

I think Tita needed to get some revenge on Elena. Lock her in a closet or something. In a retelling of the story called “ Tita’s diary “, Tita expresses a dislike for her mother and I often wonder if her father had lived, would Tita have been safer from her mother
@RosieCockshutt10 ай бұрын
Very good points 🤔

Okay, I really don’t like the mother. Not only is mama Elena is a case for social services but given that Elena is so hostile towards Tita, I wonder if the mother ever loved her at all

@@RosieCockshutt and here’s what really gets me. Why didn’t she just leave that toxic environment? I know that they were her family but they were A*holes with Gertrude being the exception to that. Tita could have easily gotten a job as a chef elsewhere or she could have started a business where she could use her talents. She didn’t need that toxic environment and those damaging relationships that she had with her family especially with evil mother

I read this one a week or two ago and so we might have been reading it at the same time! I enjoyed it but it was bittersweet to come to an end of the Discworld books. I see a lot of complaints about this book being misrepresented, as it focuses as a sort of bildungsroman of Drosselmeyer. The thing is, this is quite reasonable, because in Hoffmann’s original novella (which I highly, highly recommended!) it is obvious that Godfather Drosselmeyer and the Nutcracker are intimately linked, either as within the same family line, or arguably as something even more conflated (Hoffmann’s story works well as both a straightforward fairy tale and also a deeper, more psychological and metaphorical work). I’ve yet to fully appreciate all of the nuances of Maguire’s story, but I know he did something quite incredible with Hiddensee. And I do think part of the imperative for a good Nutcracker story is a healthy dose of ambiguity and symbolism. Your marzipan cookies look great, btw. Always love something with marzipan in it! ☺️
@mayapapaya Жыл бұрын
Also, I think the sense that Dirk just “exists” for much of the book, is quite intentional. It’s very easy to read the story as Dirk grappling with an obviously traumatic beginning, and depicts the ways in which he is disconnected from himself and the outside world, yet has access to a larger experience that comes off as fantastical, but again, if read on a psychological level, is really beautiful and I think accurate to the experience of a lot of people who experience early trauma. And this theme is built upon with the story of Nastaran first (which you can argue is Dirk’s first real source of any feeling of connection or reciprocity) and gets expounded upon in additional characters he encounters throughout his life. All in all, I think these are all very intentional choices on Maguire’s part. I could be way off mark, but I think there are a lot of things about Hiddensee that readers might accidentally miss. (Sorry for such lengthy comments. I’m obviously passionate about this book and the underlying original story). 😋
