Avalon Hill made a chariot-racing boardgame back in the (late 70s?) called "Circus Maximus" that had an 8-lane "track" with staggered turns. My friend and I used blank carboard counters for wargames and drew stick figure "runners" with their names at the bottom and the country in the upper corner. We held "the Olympics" and placed each "runner" on the track and rolled dice to determine their speed. Totally primitive mechanics. We ran everything from the 100 to the 1,500 and both relays, but the fun was providing the commentary and doing the write-ups just like David Wallechinsky's "The Book of the Olympics"! That's how we passed the time before the internet and smartphones. M

This was the first of two olympics in which Conmebol and UEFA had restrictions on who could be selected for their teams but yet the finals in 84 and 88 were Brazil, France, and Soviet Union.

I was disappointed that Michael Gross did not win the Gold in this race because he was the better swimmer than the rest.

Any day an Aussie beats an American in the pool - is a good day. I still wrankle at Spitz saying Armstrong got a free ride. It's a frickin' 200 - not a 1500. Spitz should know better.

Kathy Johnson loved her bar routine, me not so much. She would say horrible things about gymnasts after retiring. So, I’ll comment on her… it sucked! She didn’t make vertical on any of her handstands, lost momentum after release and bent her elbows many times.

Is it just me or is Kurt Browning just down right cocky and arrogant? I hope I'm wrong, but his "air" about him shouts nothing but swaggering, high-handed and pompous? Even in the 1994 games he displayed that same "air" -- 😬🙄🤔

Cathy Rigby was the worst commentator! A toe front half and a Comaneči dismount are too diff skills lady. The twist comes at diff times! And it's not subjective judging on a 9.875 when there was a slight wobble and then a hop back on the dismount 😮
