"Cannonball Runs" were terms on other railroads as well. Casey Jones was operating the Illinois Central's Cannonball Run out of Memphis when he met his fate in Vaughn, MS.

In New Jersey we had our own version of the Erie Canal, called the Morris Canal, which completely crossed the state. It used water-powered turbines to lift and lower boats, over Jersey's central highlands, as in the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

With diesel locomotives the train crews could be certain that they couldn't lose their lives in a boiler flash explosion.

I understand his reputation I really do but Casey had just came north and was supposed to be taking rest when they woke him up to go back south his train was already late and from the accident report which I use to have a copy of I think he had already made up 40 mins of the hour and a half and the accident report also stated in his initial interview the crew that was sawing in were not flagging properly according to sim and then when he gave his formal statement after he had been threatened he stated they just simply didn’t see the flag man Casey was in the wrong but he paid for it with his life my only problem with this episode is this arrogant pr!@k telling the story it said he was a retired engineer I wonder how good he was he seems awfully jealous of a dead man probably a engineer that had never done anything but be a hosler or hearder

One point often overlooked is that 2 cylinder steam locomotives tended to wear driving wheels and were harder to balance. These factors led to pounding on the rails and resulting track maintenance.

Isn't electrifying railroads as well as automobiles merely moving the pollution elsewhere ? Instead of exhaust from the individual vehicles, it all then comes, and at that greater amount from the power stations..in turn polluting THOSE places.. The only thing which would prevent this is nuclear power..But then there is the potential massive destruction from these if and when they, say. crumble...No ? Finally, battery operated vehicles WILL cause the urban areas to become cleaner, but the areas where the mining is being done for the elements needed FOR their batteries; zinc, copper, nickle, cadmium, aluminum, what have you, will then become polluted from the mining operations in those areas of the country....No ?

Casey Jones was a young man in a time period that no one today could even imagine. Where stress, hard work, and making the company that you worked for happy, doing an impossible amount of work while also sticking to the companies safety and productivity rules and doing so most of the time on little to no sleep for sometimes 30+ hours straight was all a part of daily life. The railroad companies knew this but as long as profits were up why change anything? Over his career Jones had a small list of incidents but I didn't hear of any of them resulting in death or even injury or loss of revenue and on the night of his famous last ride he was doing those same things he did on every run.. trying to get there on time on little sleep and fate lead to what transpired. It is worth remembering that Casey Jones was a hero in the end. He told his fireman that he'd better jump and stayed in his seat with his hand still gripping the brake even in death in an attempt to slow the behemoth down. His heroic actions made what could have been much worse into just one sad and unnecessary death.. his own. Rest in piece John Luther "Casey" Jones.

In South Africa most mainline tracks are electrified and a few other mainlines and most branch lines use diesels… originally from EMD and GE. Now we are using Chinese diesels and struggling to get parts when the locos break

Of all the wrecks mentioned in this documentary, the one that has grabbed my interest most is the City of San Francisco streamliner wreck. It’s a fascinating topic to research and how even to this day, no one has been held responsible for sabotage and causing the wreck to occur. I recommend finding a copy of “Tragic Train” by Don DeNevi. It may be an old book (1977) but, there’s lots of great photos of the train’s interior and of the wreck itself. Also in the book are testimony from various people suspected to be involved.

so, is this episode 10 a continuation of the History Channel's 1997 Trains Unlimited Series by Greystone Comm. Inc. / A&E TV Networks? (minus "The History Channel" 4 seconds at the front, and about a minute at the end where the credits used to be? ) I see the same steam giants#0429 channel in the que, with 1998 Episode 25 and with full credits from History Channel / Greystone, too.

Can be. Balto and Nava are very similar, given the age difference (and probably having different father since Nava looks like a total wolf) they could be half-siblings. Considering that in any case Aleu left Nome on "foot", she can't have gone that far away, so since they were more or less wolves from the same territory they could most likely be related in some way!

The company, the executives, didn’t give this movie _one more chance,_ for one more movie, a fourth one, to bring Aleu back to Nome (the plot line is driven by her leadership ending, due to a personal conflict from a rival wolf, it happens in nature with dominant animals, I would’ve written that film’s plot line’s driving point like that). 😔 It didn’t ever happen up to the 2020’s.
