When the player exposed the 3 tiles it looked like the middle tile was a red dragon, not a joker. The video showed a highlighted red dragon tile, not a joker.

Michele, my group in RI deals a hand of 13 tiles to the Ghost player. The tiles are lined up perpendicular to the ghost wall. The first 3 outgoing tiles in the line become the first right to the player to the right of the ghost wall. The first right from the player to the left of the ghost wall (incoming tiles) is placed at the end of the line of tiles. The first across tiles (outgoing) are again the first three tiles in the line. The player across from the ghost wall places her first across tiles (incoming) at the end of the line. The Charleston continues in this manner, with outgoing tiles coming from the beginning if the line and incoming tiled put at the end of the line. I used the terms outgoing and incoming to coordinate with your verbiage. Hope my description made sense. I am trying to get this group and those I play with in FL to use the simpler method you described.

What does getting "skipped" mean?
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE 7 күн бұрын
After a player discards, another player can claim that tile to make an exposure (e.g., meld) and sometimes it interrupts the order of turns. For example, player 1 (East) discards, player 3 (West) claims the discard, so player 2 (South) does not get a turn (e.g., skipped) because after Player 3 (West) discards, the game continues with player 4 (North).

Why do you want to hang on to the flowers?
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE 23 күн бұрын
Flowers are used in nearly half of the hands on the card, so they are risky to pass. If you have tiles that can use flowers, consider focusing on hands that use them or hold on to them and discard them in the begin-game (e.g., first 5 discards after the Charleston).

I think you are commenting about the 7s in pull 3. I was focused on 579/big odds targeting the 7 bam pair - there was potential for Odds #2-2 (ope multiple). When Winds #3-1 and 5-1 developed, I switched the targeted 456 craks (two multiples at the time of the reassessment and four multiples at the end). There was also potential for Consecutive Run #3-1 with the Flower in the last right.

@@MAHJLIFE I also thought this video was very confusing as well!! I see your reply, but maybe you should have noted previous lesson videos to simply learn how to read the dang card itself. That is where I am finding the most problems. Deciphering what the hands are and to actually show tiles not just words, but show actual tiles that meet the criteria for that hand. Some of us are better learners with visuals. That would be most helpful... I might also add since I just went to look at all your videos. I couldn't find the one you mention above to Arnell. Maybe you can go back and label them numerically so the novice can see.... oh this is the very first video I should watch, then this one and so on. Make it chronological if you really want to help people, right? Kind of like what an author does when he/she has more than one book in a series so the reader can read them chronologically. Just a thought.

This is interesting, to use discards in addition to exposures. Would you consider doing a video on the next steps, e.g., 1. planning your own hand (this is perhaps self-evident!) and 2. Planning your own discards to confuse your opponents. At the beginning of play, we usually have an array of choices for those early discards. I would also like to learn more about our own first discard after making an exposure, can it be used strategically to mislead opponents?
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE Ай бұрын
Planning discards is a great skill to build, but keep in mind that it's subjective and depends heavily on the category or hand you are playing and how close you are to set or ready. Your priority is expediting hand development and then assessing and mitigating risk with discards after the Charleston. I have videos on Planning Discards and a wiki article on Tile Efficiency: mahjlife.com/wiki/tile-efficiency-article-182/. You may also find the topic of Calculating Risks helpful: mahjlife.com/wiki/why-wait-patterns-matter-article-225/ After you make an exposure, discard a tile that will not reveal the category or hand you are playing - I call this deflection. This tactic is easier in the begin-game and the middle-game because you will likely have more discards. In the end-game, your focus should switch to push-fold judgment. See the bottom of the Why Wait Patterns Matter wiki article for best practices. You can see all these topics and more in the American Mah Jong Sills and Strategies Matrix mahjlife.com/wiki/amj-s2-matrix-article-210/

When a pong or Kong are exposed why is 1 tile Laid on the horizontal
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE Ай бұрын
@@KathrynKlaus-f7j Mahjong Time offers four Asian versions of the game in addition to American mah jongg. In Japanese/Riichi mahjong and Chinese/Mahjong Competition Rules, a tile claimed for an exposure is sideways to indicate which player discarded the tile. If the tile was discarded by the player on the right, the tile on the right is sideways. If the player on the left discarded the tile, the tile on the left is sideways. If the opposite player discarded the tile, the tile in the middle is sideways. This method is not part of the American mah jongg game but it’s part of their code so we can take advantage of it for reading hands. mahjlife.com/wiki/hand-reading-article-222/

@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE Ай бұрын
@@jose1phine It depends on the version you are playing. For American mah jongg, it’s 152 tiles and each player builds a wall 19 wide, 2 high. For most Asian versions it’s 144 and each player builds a wall 18 wide, 2 high - this must be what you have. This symbolizes the Great Wall of China.
