I own a body shop... and a gelcoat shop... 1 property but 2 completely different crafts. I have this speech once a week. People will take it to a buddy that sprays cars. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL. Never automotive clear your boat. It will not last 2 completely different building. I have car guys that only touch cars and fiberglass guys that only touch fiberglass.

Not completely sure the file didn't have a date and the footage date was wrong. I sold that boat in 2021 and it was probably that year. I know it's fishing opening day in MN

people really don't talk about sunnies and crappie fishing on Mille lacs. Even when we were living there in the summers I don't remember anyone talking about fishing them. I would like to try Mille Lacs for panfish one of these winters. Would be fun to go back and visit friends from years ago! I am excited for this coming ice fishing season!

From my knowledge the glitter reacts to temperature at a different rate which will lead to failure of any added layer of clear. Best fix is to wet sand the aftermarket clear off, wet sand each layer out with a higher #grit until a cutting compound can remove the remaining fine scratches then buff wax to finish. In theory the added layer to fiberglass boats with glitter is the same principle with layering carbon fiber over fiberglass. Looks great at first but will lead to failure since the layers won’t move as a unit. Just went through this on my 88 ranger. Hope it helps

Automotive clear coat will be laminate. You can use a clear marine gel coat and it will be fine but you can't use automotive products because they're not designed to be wet all the time and boats flex where is your car does not. Joker will hold up.

Hello. We bought a boat that has this problem. This is our first boat and we are clueless with what we need to do. So, in reading the replies I see that we need to sand it off. After, what type of gel coat do you use? How is it applied? Thanks for your feedback.
@randallrobinson6220

That is definitely clear automotive clear coat. I actually did this to my boat. It lasted about 5 years before it started pealing. Sand off and bring it to a boat repair place and have them spray clear gel coat. That’s what should have been done.
@osirisblaster

Doubt it was done 3 years ago. Bet the previous owner prayed it with canned clear coat right before he put it on the market. It can be fixed by sanding and then buffing the gelcoat. Gelcoat doesnt have a clearcoat and shouldnt ever need a clearcoat. What happened was the clear delaminated from the gelcoat because the metal flakes in the gelcoat expands and contacts with heat in the sun while the clear coat doesnt so that's why the clear looks so chalky. Its delaminated.

I have this same problem with my boat. Mainly the front but I know the whole boat will need to be stripped. You stated the clear coat could be removed by sanding it. Could you share what grit(s) of sand paper and the steps? Wetdray sand paper I'm assuming. Could I using a sanding tool or has to be done by hand? Thanks.
@osirisblaster
@osirisblaster 3 жыл бұрын
@@cxvasqu I would start at 800 and see if that removes the clear. If that doesnt, move down to 600 and so forth. Then once the clear is off, start going incrementally up in grit to up to 2000 and then a polish compound to bring the gel coat to a shine. And yes, you want to use a wet sanding technique.
