Poseidon makes the Ambition X and the Redwood--both about twice the price of the Trieste--but they also look like very solid entry level gravel bikes as well. I'm looking to grab the Ambition X in the next few months.

I haven't had a chance to try out a Poseidon, but they seem to be well-liked. Definitely offers a lot of value and I bet you'll love it. The Giordano was just something to tinker with and see how bad or good it could be for the money. I would recommend going with a nicer bike like that Poseidon for anybody that isn't willing to deal with some of the cheapness that comes with a bike built by Kent International.

hey aaron, been watching your videos recently since I am taking an interest into biking. my dad bought me a steel foldable mountain bike around 2 months ago and its been keeping me out of the house lately. but i have realized as my journey continued, its really bad quality. & I'm looking into buying a new mountain bike that would last me a long time and is really strong and fast with a budget of $500. what bike would you recommend me to get?
@anonymouscitizen9630Ай бұрын
A fast Ripper is a fast Ripper. You are buying it for the name and because you had or wanted a PK Ripper as a kid. The quality on this bike is going to be the same a a fast Ripper since they are both made in China and when I found out the new PK Ripper's were made in China . I went out and bought the S&M Covid Cruiser Made in the USA No way I am paying full price for China stuff. If I am paying full price I am buying American. ....Also look at Johnny True Torch he has some badass bike Made in USA!

These aren't designed for that type of riding. Some of these bikes do have a weaker aluminum handlebar that I've heard about a few instances of breakage. Kent/Thruster is pretty good about replacing them under warranty with the stronger cromoly steel bar.

Good down to earth review evaluating a budget bike similar to a bike you might find in Walmart. But with a discount code and slightly better components than other bikes costing more a very good value. And the bike actually looks good in gray and I got the small frame as they are sized a little larger than specified - I am 5' 9" and the smaller frame does shave some weight off. As always the three simplest and affordable improvements are the three contact points - saddle, hand grips, and pedals. For under $70 you can get a really nice seat, platform pedals, and nice double lock grips and your ride will be vastly improved. As he points out the bike needs some basic adjustments which may include having the front fork aligned to fit wheel better and having the derailleur hangar adjusted (aligned) - very easy to do at a bike shop for a low cost with the proper tool. The integrated brake/shifter levers really make it an excellent value also.

Does anyone have gravel bikes with cantilever brakes
@aaronbehindbars2 ай бұрын
Everything has gone to disc brakes. I'm sure if you look around, you might find something, but you'll probably just need to find something older if you want rim brakes. If you want something inexpensive, look for an old cyclocross bike. There is also the ever-present opinion that old mountain bikes are just gravel bikes. Plenty of people are taking those and converting them to drop bars. You can do the same with 700c wheel hybrid bikes. Plenty of those old things sitting in garages that people either will give away or sell very cheap. Your other option is to go high end with something like a Crust Lightning Bolt, Crust Nor'Easter, or some sort of Rivendell (they eschew the gravel moniker and instead use terms like Country Bikes or Hillibikes).

@aaronbehindbars2 ай бұрын
A bit of a tease, huh? It rides...fine. It has the vibration muting smoothness you'd expect from steel, but it's not particularly lively or fun. Part of that is probably the fact that it weighs 30+ lbs and has plain gauge tubing. It doesn't feel like a noodle under power, but it doesn't exactly spring forth when you hammer on it. It's content just to plod along at a mild pace. It's unremarkable in how it rides, so you probably aren't going to think too much about it while riding.
@mildthing2 ай бұрын
@@aaronbehindbars Thanks for the follow-up. I was already trying to round up parts to upgrade, but, hell, the parts cost more than the bike so I think I'll pass. It's awesome that there are entry-level bikes out there at this price. This bike would serve someone well as a commuter or winter beater

Seems like a good value. I had just looked at it before viewing this. At the original price, not sure, but at this price, I think I'm going to give it a try. Looking for good road bike mainly that could hit gravel occasionally. Not confident in the Ozark Trail.
@waktosha73782 ай бұрын
I like this bike being chromoly, but I hate the bars, and the lack of attachment points a real gravel bike should have. As much as I would love to get a chromo gravel bike, I already have the G.1 Explorer and even though it is aluminium which I don't really like,it is a great bike! I really like all the attachment points, the flared bars, and all the cheap parts just work great! Even my stock brakes, with plenty of adjustments, work well. The G.1 Explorer is a really good looking bike too.
@aaronbehindbars2 ай бұрын
This bike is an all-road bike masquerading as a gravel bike. A road bike that can hit a gravel road or trail is a nice thing, though. I had a really nice carbon frame Specialized Diverge I sold 3 years ago due to ongoing shoulder and elbow pain on my left side, so this cheapo Giordano is just an experiment to see if I have any business riding a drop bar bike anymore. The Diverge had flared bars and I didn't find them better or worse than non-flared drop bars. I do like the extra width, though. I didn't mean to sound overly negative about the Ozark Trail. A lot of people seem to really like them and I think they serve their purpose well. My biggest gripes on it are the freewheel rear hub and lack of a large frame size (at least for now). Interestingly enough, Ozark Trail just released a flat bar version of the G1 Explorer which is available in a large frame and has a freehub rear wheel with an 8 speed cassette. Your point about the lack of attachment points is valid. I don't have any plans to load a bike up with all the different cages, racks, bags, etc. Therefore, it isn't a big deal for me. The average buyer of one of these is probably going to use it for shorter rides. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment!
@claudiofiero85232 ай бұрын
Interesting bike, especially considering the price. I'd consider swapping the rear derailleur for an MTB one, like Acera or Alivio, if compatible, in order to accomodate a more gravel-like cassette, and maybe an MTB crankset as well, like 40-26 or 46/30 from Tourney, Altus or Cues, to keep it cheap. It will be uglier and with Q-factor and chainline messed up, but more usable on climbs. Got a steel road bike myself with similar equipment, except for rim brakes, so reduced tire clearance, up to 32 I'd say, and the 50/34 cranks feel a bit too much for my legs, the 46/30 is something i'm seriously considering

I have the Saturn nine and like it a lot. I want to also get this model but in black and red. I have reservations on ordering it though because people say you get different parts than what’s advertised online. Is this true? It seems like you get Kenda tires and looks as advertised. Is it just the black model that has problems?

It seems that there were some chamges to these bikes somewhere along the way, so it's a bit of a gamble as to which version you'll receive. Mine was an earlier production date, so it matches what it shown on the Thruster website. I think you are referring to the 27.5 wheel version called the Retrograde. That one I heard often shows up with sone different parts than the wrbsite version, at least those who are in the Thruster facebook group have been reporting. Still, for $255 at mendhambikes.com, it's a good deal. On top of that, you can get another 5% off with code "comeback" there. Might be worth a chance.

I was thinking of going to the GT from a Thruster Retrograde, but I’m only 5’9. Wonder if this bike would be too tall? I’ve not ridden a 29er before.
@aaronbehindbars2 ай бұрын
I don't think it'll be too big. I have the dropper post installed on my bike to better allow me to get the seat up higher since I'm 6'1". The GT has taller handlebars and a slightly taller head tube than your Thruster. It isn't going to feel drastically bigger. The 29 x 2.5 inch wheels/tires will feel somewhat different to the 27.5 x 3.0 on your Thruster. Probably not a lot, though. Those 3 inch tires have a pretty weighty feel, so you lose a bit of nimbleness compared to a 27.5 x 2.2 or similar size. Hope that helps.
