Hmm..I'd use a mix of edible and commercial species native to the region as its core and add in exotics from similar climates to add value. Things like baobab, african olives, oil palms, pistachios, macadamia, pink guavas, banana/plantains, pineapples, pomegranate, tigernuts, groundnuts, grapes and watermelon for example. All 7 layers of the forest would have to incorporated for success though. Canopy, understory, shrub, herb, root, ground cover and vine. Diversity is key.

And the Swedish study, again and again. The first mistake is to set the emissions of building the electric and the ice on the same level. ( Without battery ) 2000 moving parts, very complicated and high technical combustion engines with with automatic or manual transmission, tank, hundreds of sensors, exhaust system, exhaust gas cleaning, complex cooling, etc has the same impact as the 200 parts driveunit of electric car?? Your facts are opinions no facts. Won't losing my time with this video.

There is one absolute gigantic flaw in your data. If you are going to compare where the energy in the battery comes from, you have to consider where the fuel in gasoline cars comes from as well. Otherwise you are not comparing apples to apples. Take a look at this video and learn why this video is in need of an update. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6C5o3x-mMmroKM Also, batteries today are absolutely being recycled. @JerryRigEverything even have a full walkthrough of a battery recycling plant where they recycle a full EV battery. Not only that, a EV battery usually ends up as home battery backup extending the length of its life before it goes to be recycled. There are many more studies and researches you can reference, but you need to include the full picture.

40% of carbon emissions come from electric power plants, 15% comes from passenger vehicles. EVs usage increases electric bills by 15%-20% per vehicle in a household, which have 2 vehicles on average per household (30-40% increase in electric consumption avg). If everyone in America drove an EV there would be 30-40% increase of electric consumption which would equal to a net increase of carbon emissions through the energy sector by about 12%-16%, 52%-66% total CO2 emissions, which would cancel out the reductions brought upon by EVs. If the cost invested and spent on EV technology went towards improving gas consumptions by making engines more efficient, and improving exhaust system's ability in reducing CO2 , which is what we have been doing since the 70s. Then we would actually reduce emissions instead of creating another problem like we did when the idiots who thought replacing paper products with plastic ones was environmentally friendly.

Several factors I didn’t hear mentioned: The amount of electricity used to bring crude oil from extraction to pumping into the car tank is almost as much as the amount to run an electric car directly. LFP batteries, which are becoming the norm, don’t use cobalt and last longer than a vehicle is expected to carry it around. The battery,if not recycled, can be used for stationary storage. An electric car charged by the dirtiest power, coal, produces less carbon dioxide than a gasoline engine per mile. Suburban drivers, who are likely to drive more miles, usually have room for solar panels at home, reducing the load on the grid and can contribute to grid stabilization by charging off peak and feeding the grid during peak hours. I still drive my Toyota but while it’s parked,it doesn’t pollute at all. The solution to environmental problems might be stopping wars over petroleum, outlawing professional sports, and stay at home.

One important question (maybe its there but I missed it). You factor in the co2 production of energy for EVs, how do you factor in the co2 production of fuel for ICEs? It would be fair to take account for both?

Did i miss something? Plenty of talk about the carbon footprint of the EV battery but no mention of the manufacturing complexity of the engine, gearbox and clutch assemblies. I would imagine the amount of machining, casting and hardening processes would add significantly to the Ice carbon footprint? Dirty engine oil changes and amount of time carried out repairing and servicing ice cars would be significant too?

Well done. I have been looking into this and this is the first evidence based non hysterical analysis I have seen which makes sense. Alas, living in australia where our power grid results in more than 500g of Co2 per kwh, as well as the range requirements and lack of infrastructure in the rural areas, we went with probably our last ICE car. A real deal killer for us is how much it now costs to charge up at a charging station ( engie just jumped it up to be above the household residential energy costs) - so we had to factor in the cost of a battery for the home solar as well - which made an ICE a better alternative both economically and ecologically. I am hoping in a few years' time improvements in fuel cell tech, hydrogen and yes even synthetic fuels combined with a cleaner energy grid will mean it makes more sense.

Considering the amount raised to help this great idea, of all the videos on this subject, i only ever see a hand full of people planting from a poly tunnel or working from a pick up, When in fact it needs a full scale planting and thousands of people to get this done and the back up to look after the seedlings.Come on Africa get in second gear.

To be fair though, really small amounts of cobalt is used for refining fuel. I'm on the pro-EV side of the debate, but I do think it's important to note that. If you're arguing with someone over the child labour objection, we'll then of course a little bit of child labour isn't better just because it is less, and the use of cobalt in fuel refining (and moving away from it in batteries) is a massive own goal for the ICE proponent. But if we're talking amounts and cost, it's a tad more complex. But overall I quite agree with you. Many people who use the cobalt objection do so without realising it's also used for fuel refining. And they often use a mobile device with cobalt in the battery to send that objection into the ether.

You missed one very important thing about cobalt; it is also used in the process of refining oil to gasoline. More is used there each year then in producing batteries. Also it is consumed in that process. It can be recycled in batteries. Claiming that there is no current system for recycling batteries is just false. In both the US and EU there are several viable recycling facilities that are up and running. They will take (for free, and even pick it up in most cases) any lithium-ion battery they can get. In fact it is illegal to put them in landfills in both places, so they are not going there. The reason that only 5% are being recycled is because most of them are being reused in grid storage first or being refurbished. They will eventually get to the recycling. You hinted at, but didn't directly say that having an EV decouples you from the source of electricity. That allows the grid to clean up and the EV just gets the benefit for free. I think it would have been more fair to compare the model 3 (since it has a range more folks can accept) than the Leaf. The Leaf is not selling well at all anymore. I know, for a commuter it is a great idea, but people want to be able to road trip too, and you can't reasonable road trip in a Leaf, at all. Finally I think it is overly simplistic to only look at CO2 when it comes to the environment. It isn't even a good aggregate for all air pollution, and completely ignores ground and water pollution. It isn't so simple though, because when you do this it is always apples to oranges. It needs to be done and definitive though or you will still have people claiming that EVs are worse for the environment because the batteries cause more overall pollution.

CO2 is NOT harmful. CO2 cannot change temperature. The global average temperature did NOT change for over 26 years. CO2 is ... a BIG business. There is NO man made climate change. Most of you don't even know the difference between weather and climate. EV's are not electrical, they are just battery cars. There is no such thing as renewable energy: Physics... ever been to school, good doers? Thought so...
