I remember hearing the rumbling the exact moment this happened, as I was getting up in central London. There was thunder then a very deep rumble for a few seconds. I instantly told my mum I thought there was a tornado and switched on BBC and so it was. I was a bit surprised at how far in west London this happened, as the sound was very loud, albeit brief.

I was 9 and I remember this day very well. I was at school on the playground 14 miles away in North London; at around 10:35 AM storm clouds were billowing and darkening. I said to a teacher 'Miss I think there is gonna be thunder and lightning' we noticed the wind blow from the south then INSTANTLY blow from the west ( a change in direction so quickly is a classic sign of a tornadic thunderstorm) She said: "Yeah I think your right". Then the clouds got very dark with thunder and lightning, torrential rain, gusty winds, and coincidentally at 11:02 AM (the time the tornado touched down) there were hailstones falling. The squall line thunderstorm was all over in about 15 minutes. Followed by clear sunny skies and a moderate breeze. It was only when I got home and my dad called me to say there had been a tornado in Kensal Rise.

3:06 is not the don its eabeck overflow, this area was designed like that so when the floodgates of the don close the beck can safely flow into the flood plain sadly even this could not contain the amount of water pouring into it from the beck & started overtopping into Bentley rise & the nature reserve which was the former Thorpe marsh waste tip I live not far from these areas & visited days later where I found the affected areas to now be getting water pumped out but roads still closed off as a lot of the land especially around fishlake is low land & suseptible to flooding, I currently have in my possession photos of the barnby dun eabeck flood plain full to brim & overtopping onto land that was never meant to flood I do not have any aftermath of the fishlake flood as I found it far too upsetting to have taken any

I just really feel for you all, I do not live near the flooding, but I was near North Bridge at the time when the flooding was happening. I have written to Dan Jarvis months ago, because as Mayor of South Yorkshire, and as he will know now, and explaining that the River Don, Aire, Ouse, Trent will be vulnerable to flooding in the future and it is needed now to get preventative schemes in now. I explained the Isle of Axholme engineering scheme of Vermuyden where I use to live, as I experienced some flooding near Epworth. I also once lived in Bawtry which is built on a higher gradient, but the River Idle at one time was redirected, thank god it was because the floods came upto the rail bridge. I have written to Ros Jones, Jeremy Corbyn, Boris Johnson more or less giving my concerns and suggestions. It must have been horrendous for you and everyone else to have to go through this, when it could have be helped by more prevention schemes. Money!!!! It is overdue to sort this problem out, as it has happened, as you said 2007, my mum was there in 1947 as a landgirl in Bentley flooding. Do you think Jason, a overhead/underground reservoir is needed somewhere along the River Don for the overflow of water? l know there are becks nearby, Eabeck and it is a long beck isn`t it? Could this be widening or made deeper? Also the farmers fields now acting as flood plains, there will be concerns here for their livelihood, so there should be long term measures here too. Looking from the air (video drone) you can see the scale and it is very, very bad, and I donot think the UK know the true scale of it.

It is the River Don just S of the bridge at Barnby Dun. I was standing on the bridge when I took the pictures. It is not the Norwood spillway on the Ea Beck, which was completely inaccessible. The flow was going into the same washlands though. Fordstead Lane is still closed more than 2 weeks on.

@@torrotim River Don overtopped also along Thorpe Bank into the old powerstation and along the road to Eabeck outfall. There were no properties at all flooded in this area. Fishlake had 220 properties inundated and Bentley had more with 270 flooded homes . Norwood spillway was accessable and i visited it several times that week.Entrance was via the Nat Grid works .I ve also got much better vids

it was far worse this time round than what we got in 2007 the don overtopped all the way along the eabeck floodplain could not hold anymore it started to flow onto the surrounding fields & fishlake was completely flooded out also affected was Donny town centre, sprotborough falls, parkgate Rotherham & large parts of Sheffield including meadowhall shopping centre & this happened all because the a**hole government assumed we didn't need anymore work to be done to the don, it was a disaster waiting to happen trouble is no one knew when until it did then bone head boris said it wasn't an emergency which angered a lot of residents & the warnings came in too late after the don had already had flooded into the houses the one badly affected was fishlake who got the call to abandon at 1 am which the don had already flooded the village
@torrotim
@torrotim 4 жыл бұрын
@@jasinere35 It was probably the work that the government did on defences in Sheffield that caused the higher flood peak downstream, although there may have been mining subsidence in the Fishlake area since 2007, and it was a spring tide on the Humber this time. Sometimes there is just too much water... I don't know why Fishlake didn't get a warning earlier, it seemed obvious that the water would eventually fill that basin. I wonder if an internal flood bank (there are several in the area) rather than the one on the main river breached unexpectedly.

@@torrotim utter rubbish..made no difference whatsover. it was the sheer amount of water deposited by the storm which was blocked and just stayed over the whole of South Yorks and empied itself like a powershower for 20 hours solid .These sorts of storms will be more frequent due to climate change with them holding more moisture from warmer sea surfaces

In the same year, we had an F2 tornado strike the New York City Subrbs. Formed in Carlstadt In Rockland County, crossed the Hudson River into Westchester County, hit Sleepy Hollow and Pocantico Hills, and then strengthened as it got to F2 status in Hawthorne. Destroyed a warehouse there. It stayed on the ground all the way into Fairfield County, Connecticut. I live in the southern part of Westchester County, in Scarsdale. Luckily we were spared that time around. One year later, another F2 tornado struck, this time it hit New York City. Formed over Staten Island, crossed The Narrows (near the Verrazano Narrows Bride) and hit Bay Ridge in South Brooklyn. Bay ridge got the worst of that. People say tornadoes never hit big cities, but it turns out that 2 of the worlds largest cities have not been spared

I think it's actually quite nice that we have a tidal bore in the uk that will forever be pretty much unsurfable !! Yes, it can sometimes be quite large but, for the most part undular rather than breaking. This is a blessing. Mother nature can be left to do as she pleases and we can, most of the time, see the aegir as she was meant to be seen, rather than littered with surfers etc, like on the severn.

This particular aegir was in fact a predicted four star, which is the biggest it gets to. I have seen a video of the aegir being surfed, but I do agree with you. To me, the aegir is mysterious and eerie and not show offy. It can very much disappoint and not happen when predicted. I think out of six times that I have gone to view it, three times it didn't show. I was on the other side at West Stockwith on this one and it was the best one I have seen.
