Hi i would like you to check my essay if you can i did one about the setting of crooks room and currently i have an upcoming test in 1 or 2 weeks Steinbeck represents crooks room as a small, isolated space in the stable. It symbolizes segregation and the treatment of African-Americans during the great depression and the theme of loneliness Crooks room is separated from everyone and his room is filled with personal possessions like his books. “A mauled copy of the california civil code for 1905. There were battered magazines and a few pair of dirty books”. His books shows that he is intelligent but also it shows that he wants to be left alone symbolizing his loneliness and how he cant talk to anyone. The california civil code might show that he is interested in his rights since it’s mauled and his dirty books showing his poor living conditions on the ranch. Steinbeck highlights segregation since crooks is separated from everyone and it also highlights the discrimination against black people in America during The Great Depression. Steinbeck might be trying to tell the reader that black people aren’t unintelligent since they had limited access to education due to segregation and is probably showing a positive side of him. Due to his room being separated from everyone his books also highlights the theme of loneliness. Steinbeck might be trying to highlight the fact that even if Crooks is someone who doesn’t like talking to people and human are social creatures they still need someone to be with them and Crooks can’t have that because he’s black which also highlights his limited power.

Hi, do you have any feedback on this introduction I wrote, based on this video. In John Steinbeck's 1937 novella, Of Mice and Men, the second book of the Dustbowl trilogy consisting of In Dubious Battle, and Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck presents the character of Crooks as a character who is racialy abused, intelligent, and also cynical over the American Dream. This is done to display the injustice over the treatment of African american people during the Great Depression, and as a character who is used to critisize the unrealistic idea of the American dream.
@LikeAnExpertRevision8 ай бұрын
It's great - the only change I'd suggest (and I'm being picky) is to rephrase the ending slightly for clarity- e.g. Steinbeck uses Crookes to highlight how the American Dream was not possible to achieve for Black people in 1930s America.

Hi, thanks for the great video, so you don’t have to analyse language in as much depth, but what structure would you suggest to do (PEA, PEACE, ect) and what would you do instead of analysing language, explain/link it back to the question? this would really help me, thank you, I’m sure others have said it, you are the only person who actually does OMAM, so I’m so grateful, thank you 🙏🏽
@LikeAnExpertRevision8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the comment. I'd recommend the PEEL structure (point, evidence, explanation and link to context). Instead of zooming in on the language, focus on what Steinbeck's overall message was and how he communicated that. All the best for tomorrow.

Is it fine if I use techniques as they help me analyse what he’s trying to say I don’t know whu
@LikeAnExpertRevision8 ай бұрын
If they help you to express your argument clearly then it is OK but I wouldn't recommend spending too much time on the analysis as that is not what the mark scheme is looking for. Focus more on what John Steinbeck's overall message might be.

Hello, I was just wondering if you could give any advice on this introduction I wrote about Curley's wife: Steinbeck portrays Curley's wife as a danger to men, flirtatious but also a lonely and misunderstood character. He does this to show the treatment and oppression of women in 1930's America and the patriarchal attitudes of men by using the ranch as a microcosm for society at the time. Also, do you think that if there is a character based question that it will be on Curley's wife because she has came up the least in terms of character but I think it might be something about her significance or relationship with others. I am not sure though..
@LikeAnExpertRevision8 ай бұрын

could you describe Curley as possessing narcisstic characteristics ? or is that too extreme ?
@LikeAnExpertRevision8 ай бұрын
I think you could make this argument in regards to him needing to prove his masculinity through fighting Lennie. He knows that he cannot beat someone like Slim so he has to choose someone with the least social power and dominate them. Do you have any other evidence for this?
@cookie7mal8 ай бұрын
Hello could we talk about the sycamore tree use. The sycamore represents strength, protection, eternity and divinity which we could link to George and Lennie’s relationship. At the start of the novel the sycamore is used a lot but by the end it’s used less which could reflect the breakdown of the main relationships in the novela. But in the Bible, it represents transformation and regeneration so could be link that to the contrast of the life of migrant workers? My friend and I were thinking about this so I don’t know if it’s correct as we didn’t ask the teacher yet.
@LikeAnExpertRevision8 ай бұрын
I love that you've been thinking about the symbolism of the sycamore. Perhaps it symbolises the protection of the brush: this is the only time that George and Lennie are free from the tyranny of a boss on a ranch? What do you think?
