Is that a short shaft or long shaft? I have a 4.5 that is a long shaft I'm wondering if I can make work with my brothers 14 ft aluminum boat. It's not that big of an engine.

Nice! I'm impressed with it's jump for a smaller outboard! Just bought one from a neighbour on the cheap and am reconsidering it's use. Might drive a little john boat just fine!

Absolutely LOVE these engines! I have the 1969 model on a 10 ft aluminum game fisher and the thing absolutely rips! 30 mph with just me is very adrenaline packed!

Maybe your boat sits a little bit too deep in the water and the motor does not have the torque to get it to plane. A lower pitch prop might do the trick

What's the fuel mix? 50:1 or 24:1?

This is a good question...The manufacturer recommends 24:1. But I recommend a little heavier oil mix, perhaps 16:1 because this engine has the tendency to wear out the wrist pins and rod bushings... Do not mix at 50:1 no matter what anyone says about "today's better oils"....

On my 14ft boat, the difference was only marginal, a gain of about 2 mph, i suspect that on a smaller hull, the gain in speed would have been greater
