I genuinely hate this development. Valve waited so long their main writer left and had to leak the actual story. They're not strong enough narratively to follow up on Laidlaw's work, so they used a Marvel Multiverse plot to retcon their cliffhanger, progressing the story by 8 seconds and removing all emotional and narrative weight that cliffhanger had over a decade ago.

I did not really like Half-Life: Alyx. Perhaps experiencing with VR as intended improves the gameplay, atmosphere, and aesthetic. However, Valve completely ruined the concept of putting the player in the shoes of the character. Alyx constantly talking to Russell with quips back and forth like the first BioShock does not do it for me. "Shut the fuck up" was a regular sentiment during the talking segments. The game itself did not add much inherent value to the story, the art, the context, the direction, or the franchise writ large. I felt a void finishing the game, as if there is something genuinely lacking, and I still have not quite determined what that thing is. I do not even have issue with the retcon. Eli's, "Son of a bitch and his Unforeseen Consequences" is a pretty fucking weak line given the circumstances. "When I get my hands on him..." Okay, Eli. Considering the original voice actor died, the performance is not the problem... it is the writing. Alyx and Russell, the writing. Hey, maybe that's it.... I genuinely can't believe it's nearly been 5 years since this game came out

When this game was announced, i thought it would be a good idea to do a prequel sequel, which is kind of what happened. Since G-man has a relationship to time that is different than the player reality, the events of all the games are happening at the same time for him. this moves the half-life games to be about how Gordon is a tool for the actual prize of Alyx since without Freeman, Alyx would be dead twice over and never made it to white forest or probably out of black mesa. effectively the whole purpose of the events all the Half Life games seem to be to move the chess pieces to get the Combine to earth and eventually exchange Gordon for Alyx, who in the past freed G-man from his prison effectively proving her ability to be effective to g-mans goals a lot like how Freeman was observed in black mesa before being hired. All that is left now is a third act to this story that closes out loose ends and the arc will be complete.
