I am very sorry about your sister and your father. The performance of the drama was very well done. I enjoyed it. To be free. Isn't that really the purpose of life?

Much appreciated. I'm living in Hongseong now, having recently purchased Francisca Cho's translations of his work. I was afforded the wonderful opportunity to visit his thatched cottage where he was born. I finished reading the book the other night and found that his resistance to Japanese occupation, while important, was a secondary matter. What made Manhae a spiritual giant was his transcendence of nationalism. If I may be so bold, I don't think most of his poetry has much to do with nationalism; it has more to do with longing for an actual person and longing for enlightenment/illumination. He speaks of death frequently - which I interpret as death of his habitual sense of self, being reborn as pure spirit. What the narrator sees in the lover or beloved the narrator sees in all of the universe. There is much eroticism and sensuality in the poems, which I feel that many Koreans miss. They seem, instead, to focus on his nationalism, his resistance to the Japanese.

That's the beauty of art. An artist can include many layers of meanings into his/her work. Manhae played a very important role in Korean independent movement. This sense of losing one's one country is so deeply integrated into him that it's hard to call it 'secondary matter.' Yet, his artistry is so genuine and refined that his works can be read as the expression of pure love and sensuality, too. That's why I love Manhae. A lot of interpretation of his works came out during the oppressed era in Korea. If younger generation of today revisit his works and write commentary, it'll be very different. Sadly, not many younger generation pay attention to the great masters of yesterday...

Thanks for the thoughtful response. You may well be right to emphasize the importance of Manhae's nationalism, especially given the era in which he lived. Since I'm a Canadian whose country exists in relative peace, I may not sufficiently appreciate that point. I still think that Manhae, ultimately, will be remembered for his universal characteristics, for these are qualities that survive regardless of the country's particular culture or past. As a writer myself (who has recently published a volume of verse entitled "I Have Been Moved"), I share some of Manhae's philosophical concerns and yearnings. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that he admired Tagore (emulating him to some degree). Rumi, Rilke, and Neruda are among my favorite poets (by the way). I mention them because I see some similarities between them and Manhae too. I share your sadness at the younger generation's general neglect of Manhae who, in my view, exemplifies Korea's greatness. No, hip-hop, computer games, materialism, focus on the outward (rather than the inward), and rampant competition are a far cry from Manhae.

@@yacovmitchenko1490 Yes. But Korean young generation is not lost. Many K-Pop songs and young artists dig into metaphysical questions in their own way, constantly questioning the meaning of life and who they are. They live as global citizens in a new world. So much to explore outward. BTW, I love Tagore and Neruda, too. I recently bought a new translated version of Rilke, too.
