I has been suggesting and I think it was on the cards pre covid that they were thinking of moving to a exhibition / conference space. I think the worry for the museum was the lack of the supporting content of the museum and the cost etc ... however I feel there is enough of us and content to make a standalone event work, and I know many others would exhibit, including sales and commercial retailers etc which should cover the costs before you took entrance fees

Concerning the clicking in NitrOS9 - two things I would try: 1) Before typing 'GShell', try typing 'keyclick off' first. Or 2), after it boots to the Shell, hit CLEAR to go to a different window (3 full screen windows are set up by default) and run GShell from there. Keyclick is on by default only in the /term window; the /w1 and /w2 that are also started on boot both have keyclick off by default. Hopefully that fixes the issue (unless it is MAME itself on the Pi as you were mentioning). Level 1 vs. Level 2: Level 1 is for 64K RAM machines (like the Coco 1,2 and the Dragon 64, all of which had versions of OS-9 Level 1). Level 2 is for systems with >64K of RAM and an MMU, so that is exclusively Coco 3 (well, there are versions for GIMIX machines and other "big iron" 6x09 systems, but those don't have GUI's). The menus getting screwed up could be a couple of things (accidentally loading a font overtop the system font, etc). Oh, since you are running on a PI with a nice clear screen, you could select the 80 column option from the VIEW menu to view a lot more icons at once. Feel free to ask any questions here or on the Coco Discord about NitrOS9!

I have a slightly different problem. I actually want the PB version as I wanted to use one extra 16bit timer. To my surprise the board is recognized as ordinary Nano and programs without issues. However when I switch to MiniCore and PB version it looks like the bootloader is unable to connect to the board. Seems like this time the chinese manufacturer actually did put an effort to make it Nano compatible but made my life harder in the process. The problem is I cannot simply switch to Nano in Arduino IDE and upload hex compiled for PB as IDE is trying to compile it again and of course doesn't find some registers from PB. Edit: OK, I have verified that it has a botloader that with "Old bootlader" setting in IDE allows to program it as a normal Nano. And in AVRDude it indeed gives a signature of ATMega328P not ATMega328PB. I've used the "Export Compiled Binary" option in Arduino IDE to get the hex file and used AVRDude manually. It worked as a charm - I can run program written for PB variant and loaded with the old Nano bootloader. Since the last time I've used AVRDude was probably 15 years ago if not more I've took the execution command with all the parameters from Arduino IDE console when it was set as normal Nano and used it as a hint.

Yeah, I tried this the other day with a new flash on my Pi400 and I wasn't impressed. Wifi connected and I got an IP address, but that was about it. The black border (overscan) was present and I don't see why it should be given that 5.28 didn't have this issue. I had the same issue on my PI 4. Sad really as I was hoping for a beautiful experience out of the box. New users won't go passed their first boot, call it a day and repurpose their SD card.
@WiFiSheep
@WiFiSheep Ай бұрын
Indeed.... I've been saying this regarding new users for years... And as i quoted in the last video far too little for too late ... 2012 - 2014 there as a real opportunity under the Pi1 for RISC OS as at that time it ran rings around the much slower Raspbian Debian Linux .... however as we all know the PI hardware and Linux builds get faster and better (With a few exceptions) whist RISC OS stood almost totally still. Leaving aside the fact you cant actually compile this supposed 'open source' OS without an outdated paywalled complier ... and it leaves any new entrant less then underwhelmed.....
@samshort365
@samshort365 Ай бұрын
I think RISC OS has always had a reputation for being paywalled, even back in the day. Last year I dropped a bucket of cash upgrading software I already had on my original RiscStation 7500+ clone for the RPi. To my surprise one package requires online authentication, which means it will eventually undergo digital rot and will stop installing when the servers go offline. In a world of FOSS I didn't have to buy these things, I wanted to give back to the community, but I think that the time has come to accept that it is what it is and, sadly, move on.
@WiFiSheep
@WiFiSheep Ай бұрын
The problem with the 'giving back to the community' thing - which i get you did with good intentions is it give a false economy and just drives others to attempt to extort more money.. there have been a few examples of this in recent times. I guess you are probably aware of my work in the scene in recent years, which sadly has come to nothing, more as I was promised things that never happened or got withdrawn, and have seen my own free work 'paywalled' by others, so it just got to the point that I couldn't in all good faith support it anymore.... As a retro historic, plaything...... its great ... it works well on the early Pis, the back catalog of software mainly games is interesting, and the native 32-bit BBC BASIC V is the real highlight for me.... but daily driver..... no ..... But it could have been a strong hobby board / micro controller OS and it had a chance, like I said back in 2012 - And the owners / community blow it big time! We'll revisit occasionally, but i'm not pushing it the way I was a few years back!

We'll have to see... As a mentioned again in the video the big problem with my TinyBASIC / RIO kernels is although they compiled and executed on ARM, the BASIC interpreter would then crash, this was due to 16-bit integers being used in the core TinyBASIC C source, So if you Run or Listed a program it would just hang the system! ESP-32 didn't have this issue and ran the AVR code quite well in a 32-bit space... So again we'll see what this new ARM Cortex 33 architecture is like.... not holding my breath and also not saying BASIC cant run on it.... maybe just not my BASIC or I need a Core Emulator layer between the Hardware and the Interpreter? Edit: forgot about the RISC V cores ...... yeah it might run on those.....

WARNING! The ATmega328PB is NOT a drop in replacement for the ATmega328P. TLDNR See Atmel Technical Note AT15007 "Differences between ATmega328P and ATmega328PB" for more information. Of particular concern is that two of the pins that are used for VCC and GND on the ATmega328P are now I/O pins on the ATmega328PB. Pin 3 is GND on the ATmega328P but is PE0/SDA1/ICP4/ACO/PTCXY on the ATmega328PB. While pin 6 is VCC on the ATmega328P but is PE1/SCL1/T4/PTCXY on the ATmega328PB. If the PCB is made as per the original Nano spec for an ATmega328P then pins 3 and 6 will be connected to the GND and VCC rails respectively. If you use an ATmega328PB firmware and enable either of these pins as output things are not going to end well. Pins 19 and 22 have additional functionality on the ATmega328PB but at least these pins are taken out to the ADC6 and ADC7 pins on the Nano. Pin 19 on the ATmega328PB is PE2/ADC6/PTCY/ICP3/SS1 while pin 22 is PE3/ADC7/PTCY/T3/MOSI1. The technical note does, however, state that the ATmega328PB is fully software compatible with the ATmega328P so it "should" be possible to upload a Nano firmware to this device and use it as an ATmega328P without the additional features of the ATmega328PB. This assumes that there are no bugs in the firmware which alter any unused/reserved bits in the ATmega328P registers that are used by the ATmega328PB. Such bugs would go unnoticed on an ATmega328P but may cause issues when executed on an ATmega328PB. This caveat also applies to any libraries used. As others have commented the old Nano bootloader appears to work but the new one does not, this may be the reason why. The Arduino IDE will not program the Nano bootloader into the ATmega328PB because it has a different signature to the ATmega328P and AVRDude checks this signature before uploading anything. It is, however, possible to upload the firmware from the command line using AVRDude with the -F switch. The -F switch (note upper case) forces AVRDude to ignore the signature bytes and upload the firmware. The ATmega328PB also has additional fuse bits and uses a low power oscillator, the rail to rail oscillator option is no longer present. This low power oscillator has a clock failure detection (CFD) circuit and fuse which force the ATmega328PB to revert to an internal 1MHz Calibrated RC Oscillator when it detects missing pulses. This clock failure detection can occur due to poorly routed boards that would not be a problem with a rail to rail oscillator. CFD can only be recovered by power cycling or a hard reset. This can result communication issues and other errant behaviour. caveat emptor

Are these 328PBs that are sold in China real Microchip products, or are counterfeit clones?
@RogueTrooper488
@RogueTrooper488 3 күн бұрын
@@bzdzgwa The ATmega32PB is an official part but it is not a drop in replacement for the ATmega32P. Either someone didn't read the Atmel technical note when they chose to use these parts in an Arduino Uno board or they just didn't care. Technically even using an ATmega32P-AU is incorrect for an Arduino Uno as the TQFP-32 part has additional pins not present in the PDIP-28 part which the Uno is designed to use. The ATmega328P-AU is used in the Arduino Nano which has two additional analogue input pins (A6 & A7). There is no way to access these additional pins on a conventional Uno board.
@LoZiooo
@LoZiooo 2 ай бұрын
The good thing is that the 328PB has much more peripherals compared to the 328P, you've got 5 timers, 2 UARTs... So we can say that we were not scammed, quite the opposite :'D And the other thing is that with my nano board I noticed the TX pin always on when I first plug the board, but I was able to reprogram it by selecting the ATMEGA328P old bootloader... Cheers

I got some of these a couple of days ago and finally got them working fully. Initially using "old bootloader" worked. Various reports said the old bootloader has bugs so I wanted to update it. I tried usbasp but that failed because it said it was the wrong chip signature. I tried adding a 328pb board but the implementation I tried failed with a strange avrdude error message when I tried to write the bootloader. After readiing a few forums I found out you *can* burn the 328p bootloader by changing the chip spec for the 328pb. That can be done by manually entering the bootloader upload commands it uses with avrdude. When you do that the bootloader will lie to the IDE and it will behave pretty much like a normal 328p thereafter. The two chips are apparenly so similar that will work: but you can't use any new features in the 328pb. After finding that solution I found the bug in the other board implementation and now everything works fine.
