I was an only child and in my early years my dad's tastes - the radio hits of his youth - shaped my own. Middle of the road big band jazz was his love. To him classical music ("long hair" music he called it) was ridiculous and you had to be insane to listen to it, let alone enjoy it. I, too, therefore initially dismissed it as an upper class pretention.

"O mio bambio caro" was beautifully sung by Callas, but for my money, the song belongs to Kiri Te Kanawa

I cannot read music as never had money for music etc growing up in a council estate in england. I am 54 and have learned quite a repertoire by ear over the years. noone really hears me unless I belt out ave Maria (Bach gounad) at parties. or used to before 2020....noone to sing for any more... soon though!! I am currently getting sposa son disprezzata down to sing at an old peoples home with my dog in tow. along with a few others. I think I have a pretty decent voice - many people are shocked and bowled over, but the MAIN REASON I sing is because it makes me feel like I am back home with the angels by my true Father's side. I don't sing nearly enough. almost as though I am denying myself the joy. I just made a vow to sing at least one song a day because it really does help your mood and any ailments. its the vibration. our own voice should be our biggest healer and we are meant to communicate with each other in song!! much love to all opera and good music lovers!! don't mind my ramble lol. I just think EVERYONE should sing EVERY DAY!! 💙💙💙

I see why opera purists can't stand Callas, she has such a unrefined voice. But at the same time I can totally understand why other people unencumbered by convention love her voice and characteristic delivery. I vacillate between both camps, the performance of Un Bel Di Vedremo is ear grating but other times Callas can absolutely leave me awestruck.

All TRUE opera purists know that Maria was the best operatic singer of the 20th century. Then comes Dame Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballe, Birgit N, Zinka Milanov etc.

I was quite perplexed by your arias choice. Maria Callas in Butterfly is not the right singer, the character of CIO cio San doesn’t suit her at all. That’s why she never peefoeme that part live.

No matter how hard Man has tried over the ages he has never invented a musical instrument that comes close to the purity of the human voice.

Well so many songs to pick from one more melodic the other more dramatic the other more evocative more poetic than the previous. The beauty of these arias lies in that they may be heard a myriad times yet never be old nor boring nor die timeless like tears in the rain.

Dear Prima Donna. I urge you to rename your post (or repost it) but don't embarrass yourself any further. There is no such thing as a song in opera. There are arias! They are two different musical forms. I don't really know what is your area of expertise to give you an example. Let's assume that you bake. You wouldn't call a slice of a chocolate mousse pie a cookie, would you? Aria is a slice from an opera. In music, not every musical form which has a voice is a song. It could be an Opera, Oratorio, Choral, etc..., etc... Aria is a part of the entire storyline and plot of an opera, as well as part of the elaborate and intricate musical journey created by a composer. Some of those journeys could be three hours long. Even though some of the arias are so beautiful that they are performed as individual pieces in a concert setting. People who love opera would remember where this aria came from. One of the great examples is "Summer Time" by George Gershwin which became very popular among jazz singers and, in fact, it is an aria from his opera "Porgy and Bess". On the other hand, a song is a much smaller musical form. In this form, verse, and chorus often follow each other creating a familiar pattern we like to identify with a song. It is most often a complete story or emotional journey which has a life of its own. Songs are usually a few minutes long, however, there are examples when a great story in the form of a song could last a while. Just came to mind, Ella Fitzgerald's "These fullish things..." is almost eight minutes long. There is a musical form called "song without words" ... music is powerful and fascinating, but I should not take any more of your time. Oh, almost forgot to say. There are no songs in piano concertos, cantatas, symphonies, etc... Etudes, preludes, sonatas, etc... are not songs either... If you listen to classical music and like what you hear but have no clue what it is, just say: "I like this melody..." It is safer than calling everything a "song". *WINK* Good luck with your exploration of classical music.

A world without Verdi is unimaginable to me. I took my ex to see La Traviata, he laughed out loud when Violetta collapsed. Some people....🤦♀️ I used to hum/sing along with the mezzo sopranos, nowadays it's with the tenors. If I start singing along with the baritones, I'd better consult a doctor!😁

I've always had an appreciation for all music. Opera has not necessarily been my "go to." That changed when I played Largo al Factotum (Rossini Barberie de Siviglia) on KZbin and THIS popped up (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nau8lmSeps6Bh9E). It BLEW my MIND. So here I am. I think it was the art of Rossini blending in these harmonies in a beautifully chaotic way. And for whatever reason I couldn't keep my eyes off Maria Ewing.
