Thanks for the video and the tips. I have a hard time understanding movies, TV series and songs in English, but I can understand some native English speakers when they speak English. For example, I watch WWE and I can understand the wrestlers' promos. However, when I'm watching a movie, I don't really understand what the actors are saying.
@Arturs_EnglishКүн бұрын
The fact that you understand the wrestlers' promos is a good sign. I'd imagine a promo would be similar to a presentation. It's enunciated and not too fast. If I were you, I'd watch a movie you've watched before and try to think about what makes it difficult to understand. It's either vocabulary, speed, accent or connected speech. Then, I'd double down on improving your weak spot and try watching the same thing in a month's time to see if you've progressed.

Americans may not understand British because they use a different rate of speech. English is my fourth language without any formal schooling in my youth. If you say that schooling is useless, then why did you learn in school?
@Arturs_English7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I disagree, though. The rate of speech matters less to native speakers than to non-natives. However, if a British person doesn't enunciate words clearly, they won't be understood by anyone - whether British, American, Australian or non-native. The accent isn't what matters here. Also, just to be clear - I didn't say school is useless, just that school programmes don't prepare students for real-life English speech.

@Arturs_English I had the Latgalian language in my childhood until the age of 3. This language is officially named a dialect of the Latvian language, but it is a different language in my opinion. In school, I studied mostly in my native Latvian, and added Russian, which was the main language in my former country, the Soviet Union, and my third language was German. When I was 30th old, I moved to Ireland for work. I didn't learn English before that. Actually, I didn't think about the language which is used in Ireland. When I heard on the first day how some Irish person was talking in English, I understood them so clearly as they had spoken in my native language. Actually, it wasn't so easy as that, but English is my fourth language that I learned in some very strange way in my youth. I know so many about languages...

@Arturs_English I was born in Ludza, but my mother took me away from Latgale when I was 3 years old. From that moment on I spoke only Latvian. Kopš tā vecuma latgaļu pārstāju lietot, kaut gan visticamāk viņa ir man. Tikai nebija vajadzības viņu lietot.

I have been listening to English for about three years without speaking or reading. Every day, I listened for more than four hours, constantly. After taking private lessons from native speakers, I was told that I had reached a B1+ level. Watching tons of videos and rewatching the same ones made me more confident.However, I’m still struggling to understand because I instinctively translate everything into Russian. My mind doesn’t want to work in a different way. I can’t say I regret the time spent, even if it feels wasted. Focusing on only one aspect of learning a language and hoping for the best wasn’t very smart. It took me four years to finally understand what the author was trying to convey in this video. Thanks for the video!!!
@Arturs_EnglishАй бұрын
Thank you! <3 The years you've spent learning English were not wasted. You've proved that you can commit to studying a language for a long time - many people give up too soon, before they see results. I'm certain your listening skills have improved! You've shown that you can stay the course. Yes, your studying process might not have been structured in the most efficient way, and you hit some bumps along the way, but that's perfectly okay. It's normal to make mistakes - learning from them will only make you stronger. Remember - you only lose when you quit! <3
