I am very much looking forward to how this progresses. I am in the process of a roof chop on an xj coupe to make it exactly like the original car Sir William Lyons had for it, instead of having to use the standard 4 door shell as he was made to do by BMC

That I think is an engine block from a late series 3 if I am not mistaken
@kennethtalbott2233Күн бұрын
looks the same as my 420G
@BarmaBoysAndFamilyКүн бұрын
Well similar, except your has a short stud block and if you look on this one you see the slots between the cylinders? This was only from factory on the very last ones made in the mid 80's because the block casting tools were all worn out and the truth is the late blocks not only cracked between cylinders but would shift too, leading to constantly blown head gaskets. However, it is also common for all mid 70's on blocks to crack between the siamesed bores, often without blowing head gaskets for many miles. So some diligent shops when they do head gasket changes also slotted the blocks as a precaution. Ideally you need a more specialised gasket to keep a good seal because i guarantee you, your 420g engine will go many, many more miles between head gaskets than this one will.

Best combination in my experience to build the best 4.2 engine was an early 4.2 block and a series 3 injected head, even if you still keep carbs. But be careful the 4.2 is not too early as they have different oilways and you will find you are leaking oil out the back left of the motor if they do not match on both sides of the head gasket. As for carbs, 2 x 2" SU hd8's are unbeatable on an xj6. If you cant get those then use early 2" hs8's. But throttle bodies is the ultimate way to go.

Great job,Josh. I was a young lad in the late 60's, and my cousin who worked for Jaguar at the time, gave me a conducted tour of the assembly line, during the summer shutdown of the factory. I remember drooling over these beauties sitting silently on the production line.

Great video, top tip, label every single nut and bolt even if you’re replacing with new as a guide to what goes where. You will NOT remember in a few weeks or months time, I only started doing that towards the end of my strip down so the start of re assembly went really quick and easy and the last bits I hadn’t labelled very slowly , there are so many different bolt lengths and threads that Jaguar use and as you probably know, Jaguar says why use two bolts when 15 will do? Good luck
