Put 90 degree exhaust tips on the truck..Muffler shop easy fix..Truck issue, not a trailer issue.

Our '24 GMC is the same way; not sure why they have had this same exhaust for so many years now but it's idiotic at best. Ford and Ram were smart enough to not have this issue (along with Banks for the GMs except for '24 so far).

Well, wonder of wonders my wife saw this and likes it better than the 442mc....I would think an F450 would be a better call due to the rear axle load. But I can't find that info yet..do you have that number?

@@ohpoleez we made our maiden voyage to the beach the other week and we did weigh the RV in the configuration how we feel like we would mostly travel with the gear and the golf cart and all the toys and the RV and truck with fuel and all the fluids was approximately 31,000. It was a little bit more than 31,000 and then we ended up getting the truck weighed after that next couple days and it weighed about 9100 so the RV was about 22,000 in its travel configuration and with all the gear and everything in it our pin weight was 4100 and the new 2024 GMC Duramax 3500. The pin weight on that truck is 5200 pounds I think it is so we’re well with an under means so I think we’ll be OK but I agree an F450 would’ve been great. We did have one of those on order and we had the GMC on order but Ford could not come through and we canceled our order on the Ford. Maybe we’ll go that route next time.

@MilesMemories24 we are looking at late next year to order the truck because in all of this planning the one true unknown is when the truck will show up...lol...12 weeks for the trailer from the day it's ordered till it shows up at the dealership so that makes things easier...we are so looking forward to these adventures...you have no idea...lol..starting in January I'm starting a pile in the garage of trailer gear and rigging supplies. I want to be able to outfit it the moment it gets to the house...best to you brother...live life to the fullest...we'll be there shortly...

How does the gmc handle a camper this big?
@MilesMemories24
@MilesMemories24 2 ай бұрын
The GMC pulls the RV nicely I've discovered with the CURT 30K hitch it seems to pull better if the hitch is set at the minimum bed height requirements at 5 1/2 above the bed rail. I set it at max height when I noticed the trim melting. That was a mistake to caused the RV and truck to chuck badly. I adjusted it to the next to last setting this seems to be much better I may go all the way back down to the lowest but it just makes me nervous being so close to the bed rail top.
@ohpoleez

What do you mean when you say "chucking" never heard that term...
@MilesMemories24
@MilesMemories24 2 ай бұрын
@@ohpoleez the chucking movement if the pin and camper isn’t set up right or you have too much weight pin weight, etc. the truck will kind of have this bucking or every time you hit a bump it’ll get a rhythm and it’ll it’ll chuck back-and-forth as we call it as as the term is called not sure that’s the technical term but it’ll get a rhythm and kind of like a saddle movement. It’ll just hear it clicking and popping and moving and back-and-forth back-and-forth. You know front to rear as you’re traveling highway speeds and about the only way to get it to stop is to apply the trailer brakes to slow it down and kind of pull on the camper a little bit so with the pin box high like that in the truck cause that more so lower it seems to eliminate that
@ohpoleez
@ohpoleez 2 ай бұрын
@MilesMemories24 interesting. I'm a railroader engineer by trade getting ready to retire soon and trains kind of do the same thing as well. Just 8000' worth...setting the brakes to stretch things out and break that rhythm is what I do as well, even though I now work for Amtrak and passenger trains don't really do that. I plan on ordering both truck and trailer end of next year for an early '26 retirement after 37 years in the seat with my wife, my Shepherd, and a ridiculous potato of a corgi...lol

My parents went round and round with Tom Johnson in Marion, NC trying to get there camper right, it seems to be the norm! They finally got it repaired but Dad started doing his repairs on his own.
@MilesMemories24
@MilesMemories24 2 ай бұрын
@@mackwhitmire8942 I too would normally have done the repairs myself. We probably won’t take it back for work in the future unless it’s a major problem. Just the hassle of scheduling to take it to a dealership for minor repairs is not cost effective. Had I not had a list of needed items I would do the same and just repair these items.

@@MilesMemories24 there Grand Junction spent so much time at Tom Johnson that it molded on the inside due to not being plugged in and having the a/c running. It is sad you spend that kind of money on something and the build quality is not there in 95% of them. My Dad was always amazed they even held together being pulled across country.

@@mackwhitmire8942 I agree even purchasing a top quality product it is still in a production environment. The quality control process definitely lacks support. I’ve noticed in ours where wiring and water lines were routed through the walls and there would be a 4” hole cut for a 1/2” water pipe. And then wouldn’t seal it back up. I get it’s a one size fits all process but at lease seal it back up with spray foam or something. Luckily we’re capable of correctly fixing these issues.

That GM has very hot exhaust, I know from my cousins ‘22. I bet it does most that while parked and limited airflow. I wonder if someone make ls a side exit tailpipe for the GM trucks that would kick it straight out?
@MilesMemories24
@MilesMemories24 3 ай бұрын
I've thought of that too just wonder if it would void my new truck warranty?
@NM-235
@NM-235 2 ай бұрын
It can only void the warranty for the part modified. The exhaust system is very hot when the emissions system regens by dumping fuel into the exhaust to burn soot out of the DPF at about 1200 deg.

@@NM-235 Yes you are right I'm waiting on BAKNS to come out there new exhaust system that is currently in development at the moment were going to install that when available in the mean time may just have to replace the tip until then. I've seen several YT videos on this topic and everyone has had to turn the pipe outwards to prevent melting and in some cases fire for guys pulling trailers with hay and such for farm use.

Well, GM has never been a consideration for me as I've opted for an F450 for my rig. Still, after checking pics of it, the 450 has a side exhaust. This is a VERY valid problem and I'm not sure side exhaust will solve this issue. Maybe a color matched piece a sheet metal? Not sure. Please keep the updates coming as it will be a fix I look for when I go to pick up mine. Brother how do I reach out to get in touch with you if I need to?

I have found that BANKS corporation does have a new exhaust kit for the GMC all your models from 2020 to 2024 they’re coming out with a side discharge they said will eliminate this kind of problem and course it’s from BANKS and if you know anything about BANKSthey make a fantastic product that product is still in development for the 2024 models so as soon as it comes out, we will get that purchased and we will update this truck with a side discharge, tailpipe to eliminate that heat being directed right on the front of the RV.
