You're to blame for sparking the ideas here..... :) When I'd first pursued membership as lead guitarist in a band (1979-ish), the band leader was a seasoned musician who'd played for years on cruise ships. He was also a waterman of the Chesapeake Bay....... let's say he said what he meant and with conclusive effect :) On the first few gigs, during my solos, he'd lean over and say directly into my ear, "CLOSE your phuggin' EYES!!!!!!". He'd tell me I was an entirely different player when I'd close my eyes. One more and I'll shuddup........ the FIRST step is to learn the chords until they're second nature. It's no waste of time; as you develop solos, you'll be able to integrate the chord parts into them. There's shiploads of guitarists who feel they're above the rhythm parts.

Hello sir, I have a recommendation for you that might enlighten you as to the reality behind "mediocre" and "poorly" in terms of quality of performance. Find Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain", and listen to Lindsey Buckingham's guitar solo. Hopefully you'll get the essence of it....... it is essentially ONE NOTE and if your eyes water up with tears of joy, you've got a gift. Carlos Santana's "eternal note" on "Europa" should give ya a jab. There's so much more to lead guitar that must be appreciated than how many notes per measure you can cram into it. Phrasing, dynamics, tone, scalar vs arpeggio passages........ but above all, play it like you love it and all's more than "adequate".
