"The result may be arbitrarily large, so it must be allocated on the heap". Is that still true considering 64 bit chips virtual address space cannot be an issue. OS like Linux should really allow the stack to grow without limit by default the same way as the heap does. On bare metal embedded you can also set the stack to whatever you require.
