Thank you for an introduction to a medium I would like to attempt… how does it dry? From Cape Town
@SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist6 күн бұрын
@@gypsycruiser thanks for watching! Depending on your humidity, it can take from a couple of days to weeks to dry. The cold wax does speed the drying time vs plain oils. Dry to the touch in a couple of days in normal humidity. Completely dry can take about 2 weeks to a month.

I don't see the point of this.
@SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtistАй бұрын
I dont know exactly what you were looking for from it, but the point was simply to introduce viewers to the art of cold wax painting. It is a different technique in oil painting in which the paint dries faster and with more texture than straight oil painting. Many types of inclusions can be introduced into the work if one desires. Many of the Old Masters used wax in their oil paints and this technique is seeing a resurgence now.

What is up with you guys and cold wax? No gesso? Optional? Why is that? Does cold wax magically neutralize the oil?
@SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtistАй бұрын
@@chrisgriffith1573 cold wax and oil is an art medium unto itself. The cold wax provides ways of adding multiple textures and additives that plain oil will not support. The wax also promotes faster drying times. The wax does not neutralize the oil paint, rather it enhances it and provides multiple ways to enhance technique. You can lay down a layer or two of gesso before starting the oil painting or use oil paper, but most cold,wax artists prefer cradled panels as a substrate. PS…I’m not sure who you are referring to when you say “you guys” but I am happy to be a cold wax and oil artist.

Can you use wax and oil mix on canvas? Also. Don’t you need to dry it before you do next layer?
@SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist11 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching. First, it’s not a great idea to work on a stretched canvas with oil and cold wax because the canvas has “give” and the cold wax could crack once it is fully dry. As far as layers, you can begin another layer as soon as the previous layer has set up to the point that the paint is not smearing under the palette knife or bowl scraper. That said, you decide when a layer is finished…if you don’t like what you just painted, you can move it around, add more paint, scrape paint back, etc. Once you’ve decided that layer is finished, then you wait for it to set up a bit before proceeding. Depending on the environment, this can take a few hours or a couple of days. You can add as many layers as you want, as long as you want. You could go back years later and add more layers if that’s what you want to do. It’s quite a wonderful medium to work with.

Just wondering with that Stabilo All pen. I hadn’t heard of it so I clicked on your link. It says it’s a watercolour ink. Wouldn’t that work like the inktense pencils? They can’t be reactivated with water once dry. Looks like heaps of fun!
@SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist Жыл бұрын
Hi Robyn, the stabilo pencil is a very waxy pencil. It is water soluble (not watercolor, per se.) It feels like a crayon when it goes down. You can leave it as is on the surface or wet it with water to blend it out. It does stay moveable with water even after it dries, which can be a drawback, so I activate it with matte medium instead and that stabilizes it so if I want to use more water based products on my project, the pencil doesn’t continue to move or smudge. Otherwise, save the addition of stabilo for the last layer of a project. A little goes a long way…the black is really strong. But it can be layered as well. I highly recommend it. There are also colored versions (white, blue, red, and brown) and a whole color set of shorter fat pencils called Woodies, which are actually intended for kids, but work the same way. I also use Inktense pencils. Those really are more like watercolor pencils that dry permanent but feel more like a lead than the stabilo, which feel more like a crayon. Hope that helps explain it, and thanks so much for watching!

Too bad they don't still make that Studio 71 gesso. It is the best, most opaque gesso I have found. Nothing else comes close.
@SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist Жыл бұрын
It’s a shame…Michael’s bought out Darcie Crafts who made the Studio 71 products. The Darcie company (Pat Catans) warehouse was just 20 minutes from me, and you could go in and buy wholesale there with a vendors license. I could find some of the products in Michael’s and Walmart shortly after the buy out, but I think all that stock has been depleted. It still comes up in search, but it’s all sold out. We had a Pat Catans retail location very close to me too, where I bought painting supplies since the 80s. Since Michael’s converted that store, it’s so different and really doesn’t compare for art supplies.
