You can slide your hand under the gill plate, but just don't touch the actual gills. But be sure to always support it with your other hand under its belly.

If they are like Pike, the rearmost gill slit won't cut you up. As always, the less you handle them and the quicker you get them back in the water, the better off they are. Great catch!!

My dude i say this with nothing but positive criticism in mind, but i think you need to invest in some proper gear. Heavier action rod to control the fish, heavy braid, a leader so you dont get bit off like your other videos and have a musky slowly die with a jerkbait lodged in its throat, proper net that has extendable handle , jaw spreaders, hook cutters etc. I walk my dog down there and see dead muskies it seems like once a month anymore. One day when you are a little more knowledgable you will look back on these videos and cringe at your musky handling and thats coming from personal experience because i was in your shoes many years ago
@k_haulin7 ай бұрын
The rod I use hasn't let me down yet. its a 7'1'' medium fast. I've only had one musky actually bite through my line. The hooks rust out anyways. Not what I was trying to do. I was using a cheap walmart whopper plopper which I've had muskies completely destroy the hooks on. I do not use braid because if I get snagged and break off 20 feet of braid, then there is 20 feet of braid floating down the creek just for someone else to get snagged on. I have lost lures and fish because they get tangled in someone else's braid. The net I have is extendable. It was just stuck in tis video. Now I just leave it extended. I do want to get a new one though. The one I have is from the 80s. The musky I lost in this video I knew I was gonna have a small chance of bringing it in. It swam in the brush then jumped. I bet if I had braid it would've gotten all tangled in the brush and that musky would be stuck there like a whale in a fishing net. I do need to get jaw stretchers. I'll have to order them online tho. I couldn't find them in stores anywhere. I have one of those long necked hook removers that I use quite a bit.
