The South Bend lathe looks like it could be a nice lathe. I don't think I would like the location of the remote on/off switch.
@popularwoodworking2 күн бұрын
The location of that remote switch is perfectly fine for most of my turning. It gets in the way for filming though (I know most people aren't doing that). A Magnetic box on it would probably be a bit better, but I like that Southbend gave a nod to the vintage Southbend (metal) lathes with the remote switch location.
@DKWalser2 күн бұрын
@@popularwoodworking I agree that for most turning, it would be fine. Where it might get in the way is when you're working on the tailstock-end of the piece while using the tailstock for support. (For example, starting to hollow a bowl.) That's not something you'll be doing on every project, and there are work arounds that can be used when it does come up.

Excellent information, great explanation of the desired features that I should look for in a machine. One question about power requirements: I see some heavier duty machines have three phase motors. I live in a residential neighborhood with single phase power. It would be cost prohibitive to have the utility bring 3 phase in. Are there any alternatives I should look for? Thank you for any suggestions input/ advice.
@DKWalser13 сағат бұрын
@@paulschraith2578 Most, if not all, of the larger lathes use 3-phase motors in combination with electronic speed control. The electronic speed control is paired with an inverter that converts 1-phase power to 3-phase. This is how the lathes come from the factory. You won't need to do anything other than, perhaps, make sure the plug on the lathe fits the outlet in your shop.
@paulschraith257811 сағат бұрын
@ Thank you! That answers one of my biggest concerns! There are quite a few more options that come with the bigger machines, that really appeal to me!

Good talk. That looks like substantial lathe. What happened to that Ricon you had before?
@DKWalser4 күн бұрын
I have a feeling South Bend sponsored the video. (The company's logo was displayed at the end of the video along with the logo of Popular Woodworking.) It would have been nice had he stated whether or not South Bend had sponsored the video in some form or fashion.
@popularwoodworking2 күн бұрын
The Rikon is still around! Grizzly (who owns Southbend) is a TV show sponsor, so all of the Grizzly/Southbend tools are on set now. The Rikon is in the back production shop now.

Awesome tutorial brother, and you are correct, the master crafts man never used fancy jigs, or formulas to layout dove tails, they marked and cut them by eye, after all they were used primarily to keep drawers from being pulled apart, old horse hide glue could not be relied upon so this joint was a perfect way of dealing with it. and if you ever seen old dressers or cupboards you won’t see all pretty dovetails on the drawers, you will see well fitted dovetails but not one being identical to the others. Christopher thanks for the great video, Pretty sure it’s the most practical, straightforward explanation out there. Cheers

Is there a way we can maintenance the handpiece? Besides cleaning the collet like cleaning around the motor or the fan inside. I wish I could get the dust and debris off the motor every now and then.

Glad to see that Sheldon vise on the end. Mine is my most used vise, and I only paid $3 for it at a yard sale. Unfortunately mine doesn't have the popup dog, but the bench it's installed on is built against a wall and on the front so dogs wouldn't be much use anyway.

Thank you for this video. Your jointer is a little fancier than mine. I have to loosen the table tension bolts and beat mine upwards on a dove tail to adjust height. Or tip it on its side and adjust. I need one easy to adjust like yours. Thanks!

I dished a water stone sharpening an axe, so googled what was to be done. Google told me to buy a flattening stone, which I did., and flattened my water stone. But not before dishing my flattening stone. So I Google what was to be done. Google told me to buy some wet and dry sandpaper and stick it to a glass table Matt to flatten my flattening stone. Which I did,. which in hindsight was a waste of time because when I next need to flatten a Water stoneI will just go straight to the wet and dry stuck to my glass place Matt, cutting out the middle man.

I place a rubber o-ring in the base of the collet (it's diameter is less than the collet diameter) thus when I put a bit into the collet it does not bottom out. I did this on my router table, as it is 1/2" router bits. 1/4" or 8mm I am just following the advice shown here.
@paleogirl431219 күн бұрын
Why doesn't the collet have a tiny ledge at the bottom to keep the bit from going all the way down?

If you think the wheels might have asbestos in the adhesive, you should NOT remove it with a wire wheel or anything else that would release the particles into the air. Have it tested for asbestos. If it has asbestos, remove the adhesive chemically or send it to a PROFESSIONAL. I am not a professional or an asbestos expert. This is simply common sense.
