30' x 40' shop that has the pellet stove run when it gets below 38 degrees fahrenheit. Well insulated so it keeps the heat nicely. Of course the average temperature throughout the season is in the 40s but that is the goal! Details are on the full video.

The Premiere pumps are much less expensive and much quieter than the oil-free pump. A small freeze dryer like yours (but upgraded) is now $1599 at Costco, and comes with the pump and accessories.

I like not having to worry about oil, but I am starting to think that the work of changing the oil may outway the cons of having an oil less pump.

The large H R freeze dryer is on sale for $3099 now for black Friday sale. If a person only buys it to freeze dry meat and eggs and diligently uses it three times per week, you will see the payback within three months or less if compared to buying freeze dried food. May of 2019 we got the best deal available for $2800 for the large size. It has paid itself back over twenty times. We freeze dry what we grow and meat we buy. Ours only came with the standard pump at that time, so now you get the premium pump for only $300 more. Plus all the kinks have been worked out with the software. BUY IT! We saved up for ten years before we got it. We knew it was going to come out years before it became available.

Too expensive for us. I waterbath, pressure can dehydrate and purchase freeze dried #10 cans from LDS storehouse . The math works best for us as when all said and done $7000 is too much and better utilized on food. I have 35 Jumbo Cornish Cross Hens to process in 3 weeks so our freezers are full. I’ve thought long and hard and any leftover foods goes to our laying hens. Thx for your content as it fortified my reasoning to save my $7000

@ , yes I tried to fit it in as we had a Bahamas Cruise for a week and had to wait to get back first week in October so yes here in Northern Utah, I hate processing chickens in the cold and snow but it is what it is here on our 4 acres. I know I blew it. We don’t waste food and that’s been a problem in the past but we have calculated to make smaller portions here in Eden, Utah. Our garden production has been fantastic even though we have a short growing season as we live on a ski resort. I may change my mind on freeze drying as the results are fantastic but with 22 grandchildren and 8 kids, $7000 comes in handy. Keep up the great content.

Very informative video. And yes there is a lot of things that I wish I would have known ahead of time. We have spent over $7,000 so far. And I'm wondering have you checked out any of the other freeze-drier companies? Do the other companies pumps interchange with the harvest Right freeze dryer? I like the product it produces also but I am finding that the repair work that we spent several hundred dollars sending our machine back to them is not holding together And they had us to take it apart several times ourself which my husband was not happy with. And the repair work seem to be on the shawty side and not holding together.

No, we haven't looked into other companies. We live off the beaten path so in our circumstances we may be in the same boat of finding a place to make the repairs. I feel like I've spent too much already to start fresh with another company.

That Harvest Right *(and now several of its competitors)* has, over the past 13 years been able to bring freeze drying to home consumers at a reasonably affordable price that is anywhere from one-fifth to one-fiftieth of the price for a true commercial freeze drying apparatus *is so remarkable of an accomplishment that it would have been both incomprehensible and utterly unthinkable to anyone familiar with the commercial freeze drying space 20 years ago.* *Harvest Right has made CONSTANT improvements to its home consumer scaled freeze dryers ever since that very first freeze dryer was sold more than a decade ago.* From this ex-professional chef's perspective, who once, for a very brief period of time back in the late 1990's, was exposed to the reality of a humongous commercial freeze dryer that the owner of a hotel and several restaurants purchased for his executive chefs to play with/experiment with; I can only state that all iterations of a Harvest Right freeze dryer across their 13 years of existence; but especially the new Pro Models with their extra tray capacities over the older standard models; and even more especially, the large and extra-large sizes; are marvels of sophistication, miniaturization, efficiency, and quietness compared to that late 1990's commercial freeze dryer that occupied an enormous amount of commercial kitchen real estate, was incredibly noisy, was incredibly finicky to operate, and didn't have a much greater tray capacity than the original Harvest Right small freeze dryer. *Freeze dryers are incredibly complex pieces of machinery and they will NEVER be as simple to operate or as maintenance free as a modern washing machine; gas or electric clothes dryer; gas, electric, or induction stove; radiant or convection oven; microwave oven; refrigerator; upright or chest freezer; vacuum cleaner; or any other household appliance that most Baby Boomers and all succeeding generations of Americans have come to depend upon and utterly take for granted how maintenance free they are.*

The pipe is the flue. What you probably mean that you add is a (flue) damper. When lightning the fire, you are doing it upside down. It´s way easier to put a few big logs in the bottom of the firebox already from the start, then put a few smaller pieces and the kindling on top of them and light it as you normally do. Then you will not have to add anything, just wait for the fire to build up. Doing so also produces less smoke during the startup process compared to lightning a big log from below, since the smoke will ignite and burn instead of that the gasification of the big log is happening at the top. And less or no smoke coming into the room. Try it!

No need for a glass front . That is just pure decor and is a weak point in the system
@FrancisMicroHomestead
@FrancisMicroHomestead 21 күн бұрын
We would need the glass or a solid door on the front to use the flue and restrict the air flow to allow the wood to burn slower through the night. If we closed the flue with no glass or the door open, it would back up into the house. Also, most wood burning stoves and pellet stoves come standard with special glass that can withstand high temperatures. It's also nice to be able to watch the fire as it burns.

Call a few tree cutting companies and tell them you'd be interested in taking wood if they need to get rid of it. Also, it could be cheaper to purchase if it hasn't been cut into logs already. You could do that work to save money. Take advantage of people cleaning up felled trees after a storm as well. Just some ideas that popped in my head.

That's awesome! We've tried ChipDrop but we are too much out of the way for them to come to us. We were on their waiting list for wood chips and logs for a long time. We did pick up a willow tree earlier this year that has helped. I'll have to call around and see if some tree cutting companies will help us out.

@FrancisMicroHomestead
@FrancisMicroHomestead 25 күн бұрын
Since I am collecting on both my coop and run, I get roughly 50 gallons of water per 1 inch of rainfall. With that said, I had only needed to add water manually when I accidentally cut power to my pump and heater and it broke. At that time, I didn't have a spigot to turn the water off and had to drain the barrel completely to replace the pump. One chicken needs about 1 gallon of water per week. Depending on how many you have, you can go a long time on a 55 gallon drum without rainfall. If you need to fill it up manually, I wouldn't fill it more than 1/3 full.

It does help burn better, but it does build up to a point where it spills out and makes a huge mess. I wish it would burn all the way up but it doesn't and needs to be removed. Thankfully, we use the ash in our garden and compost so it doesn't go completely to waste.
