UNT shutting out UT in the second half? Crazy. UNT had a solid defense that year, which led them to the conference championship. UT went on to put up 40 and 50 points on other teams that year.

Noticed that both Dan Hampton of Arkansas & Steve McMichael of Texas played in this game. Later they would become teammates on the legendary ‘85 Bears defense. 🏈

I was a junior in high school. We were in the playoffs and had a game that night (we beat John Tyler 21-14 BTW) The team and some parents were in the cafeteria having our pre game meal. One of the dad's who was listening to the game, pulled off his headphones and yelled "Texas won!!" That was a cool moment. Especially since we had a couple alumni playing at Texas at the time. Phil Dawson and Anthony Hicks.

My wife and I were there, about 20 rows up on the Texas side, around the 5 yard line... I watched Dawson's kick go up, flutter for a second in the wind, then over the bar. I erupted so loud I hurt my throat and had a hard time talking for a day or two.... I so miss those old days in Austin....

The HAVE MERCY-! touchdown at 2:03:07... after Texas had their INT-TD called back, they had possession and Vince Young did the old lemons-to-lemonade maneuver that resulted in the "Have Mercy-!" call from this commentator... who still couldn't remember that Texas actually came back from 35-7. du-uh...

UT may have the better football program but I can proudly say that Tech did not have the Cocks Not Glocks nonsense movement and we did not hire Spenser Rapone who was kicked out of 75th Ranger Regiment for being a fucking weirdo and then later kicked out of the Army altogether after his communism will win stunt. I always said JW could run the ball and give it the receiver faster than he could throw it there. I think this was his first or second start and all these years later, I stand by my assessment (see 1:06:00 as evidence) . Good leadership skills, going to be a great coach.

John Mackovic really won one major game at Texas and that was against Nebraska in the BIG 12 title game in 96. The only bowl game I believe he won was against North Carolina. After this Aggie game, Texas went to the Sugar and got blown out by VT.

utexgrad the cheating was all Texas. A chop block by Donnie Little to set up a Texas score in the 3rd with no flag. Then, again in the 3rd after Phelps long run he was picked up after having gone out of bounds on his own, and slammed to the ground...again no flag. There's your cheating. Texas has a long history of dirty play.

I believe this game was when the Rice band mocked UT in the marching routine. The band formed pictures on the field when the band director was narrating a story over the loud speaker. When he said the real reason Rice agrees to play UT, the band formed a big dollar sign on the field. The UT fans loved it and laughed and cheered for their band!

I remember this game well. Mostly because the last time UNT played in Austin, UT won 27-0. UNT held UT scoreless in the 2nd half. It was pretty impressive. But UNT ended up being really good for those few years in there with good running backs.

Looking back at this makes me miss the old NCAA football. It just never felt the same a few years later. Even when Texas played Alabama, it just didn’t feel the same to me anymore. Then the SEC took over with ESPN pushing them over the top. That UT/USC game was magical. They were top 2 all season and both survived scares in the season. I don’t think we have seen a season like it since. And then everybody thought there was way the championship could live up to the hype. Then it was better and more competitive than imagined. I think those UT and USC teams would beat anybody today.
