Standing next to someone and over-communicating does deter shoplifters, true. It also deters regular customers too! I don’t get why shops don’t just monitor with cameras instead of following customers around and ruining the shopping experience. I spend like 15K+ a year on Amazon now because I can’t walk in a store for 5 minutes without being followed. In a place like NY it doesn’t even seem like stores are successful at controlling theft - so standard methods don’t even seem to be working. (Stores need to find less intrusive approaches to solving the problem- don’t follow customers around, standing in their way, asking ridiculous questions.)
