This is awesome. The fact that Thommo also won accuracy shows if you want to be really quick you need to pitch it right up. The guys bowling short were throwing away speed.

The irony is the guy the slowest bowler (Hadlee) is the best of the lot. Very interesting to see the speeds. People always think that bowlers were faster back in the day but when you have conclusive results like these it goes to show how much we've progressed. And YES, the bowler speeds are being taken from the hand and not where they pitched. That grid they have behind the bowlers arm is used to calculate the ball speed.
@Jake-cl4uk9 күн бұрын
IIRC they calculated the average speed of the ball from the point it released from to the point it readhed the other end and thus it became 8-10% slower than their conventional speeds Arm technology hasn't really advanced in few centuries, so I don't think speeds would change over it.

Sylvester Clarke and collin Croft., perfect antidotes for these ugly Australian sledgers, invented by the greatest captain in cricket history, clive Lloyd.If these gentlemen had played, in this series.,the result would have been reversed. You may have to visit Dennis Lilee, Jeff Thomson,in mortuary. Everybody knows how Sylvester Clarke take ting, particularly, after that incident in Pakistan. He was the fastest bowler of his time, and he proved it in the slow pitches of India and Pakistan. Jeff Thomson alway struggled in slow pitches. Even in 1975, when he was at his fastest, he struggled miserably in England. He always failed against Pakistan., both at home and in Pakistan. Dennis Lilee and all other Australian bowlers, generally struggled in Asia, while West indians thrived and conquered, everywhere.

When some Australian players like Ryan Harris and Doug Bollinger were young and charging in, he bowled around 130kmph., later when he looked burly and unfit., he clocked 150 kmph, how?. Is there any magic potion available in Australia.Shaun Tait and Mitchell Starc., generally bowls in the 140ട. How can someone bowls very fast for a single delivery. Few others., Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger., all Australian s, who were medium pacers, when they were young and raring to go, later on, when they become burly and aged, unexpectedly, started to bowl quick., magical isn't it

Thomson bowled fast in the 1st innings of 1st Test in 1975 on a rain affected pitch and got no wickets, Ian Chappell told him to stop trying knock their heads off, slow down and take advantage of the pitch conditions, in 2nd innings he bowled much slower and got 5 wickets which effectively won the Ashes for Australia as all the remaining matches were drawn, he did very well in England but the pitches advantaged seam/swing over pace. You are quite correct that he was not fast other than those 2 amazing home series against England and West Indies, after his shoulder injury at age 26 he had a couple of good years but his pace was way down to maybe 140-145kmh, about the same as Pat Cummins. There were few tours in those days, by the time he was 30 his career was in decline, by the end of his career in 1985 he was 35 and way past his best, England batsmen got their revenge a decade after facing him the first time

Jeff Thomson failed to make any such impact in England, in 1975,when he was reportedly at his quickest. Don't say he slowed down, after the injury., cricket experts always confirmed that, he was still able to bowl at speeds, he was claimed to have bowled, for a limited period, any time in a cricket match, even after the injury, you were mentioned here.Still he failed.,Then his record in Asia, is pathetic., while West Indies, always had an impeccable record, on those slow tracks.Then his one day international record, which, includes a much below par economy rate of 4.56.,is there to confirm my arguments. All those stories of Jeff Thomson's is limited to Australian continent only, outside, there is nothing much to talk about. West Indians proved their class, everywhere.1977 Ashes., England won 4-0., despite Jeff Thomson and Rodney Hogg, firing on all cylinders, with, Greg Chappel as captain. 1976 Aus vs Pak series was locked 1-1., Dennis Lilee, Jeff Thomson &co played. Even that 1974-75 series., England just lost it 2-1.,again all these very fast gentlemen were played. 1975.,in England, just able to cling on 1-0.,first test victory., England dominated the rest of the series, often come very close to victory.Against India, 1978.,escaped with a 3-2 victory.Against the West Indies, in 1976.,it was psychological warfare., verbal abusing sledging, racial commenting, no limitations to a barrage of beamers and bouncers.But in 1978.,WestIndies had the perfect antidotes for Jeff Thomson. Sylvester Clarke and Collin Croft., not only they were the quickest bowlers, taller, faster and stronger than Dennis Lilee and Jeff Thomson.,at that point of time., they were extremely aggressive., i hope you recollect that infamous incident featuring Sylvester Clarke, if he can do that to a spectator., when he get to know the abuse and horror, his teams suffered., how beautiful his reaction would have been to Lilee and Thomson. Reports says thar Jeff Thomson tried to be aggressive, initially during the 1978 series., this time,quietened and tamed by some gentlemen, in no time. Another report says Dennis Lilee got his medicine during packer series /circus.Anyway, from that1980-81 Australia WestIndies series onwards, these gentlemen suddenly become extremely shy and well mannered., not even looking at the eyes of the West Indians. You can check it, from the videos publically out there., to verify the efficacy of the ferocious treatement they got.

1976 series between Australia and West lndies, was staged with the most disgraceful and shameful incidents in cricket history, well above the body line series., Plenty of racial abuse and sledging were involved, along with body line from Australian gentlemen, at the helm of affairs, ably supported by a team of sledgers, including Dennis Lilee and Jeff Thomson.West Indies lost that series, very badly, just because of this continued torture. clive Lloyd, himself described it as bruised and battered. But he comeback strongly with gutsy People like Sylvester Clarke and Collin Croft., they were extremely quick bowlers too. Jeff Thomson tried to repeat his 1976 Show by aggression, during the 1978 series, happened in West Indies. This time tamed him up wasting no time. The poor fellow got the necessary lessons, and was reformed. History says., Dennis Lilee and co along with these two leaders were extremely obedient and well mannered, when playing against the West Indies, although they were often arrogant against others. It is wonderful too see, a scared Dennis Lilee and Jeff Thomson, when playing against West Indies

The West Indies fast bowlers of late 70's and early 80's might be the fastest of all time. The results and impact, they had made against stronger teams, overcoming pitch conditions and climatic barriers were unmatched in cricket history. Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Sylvester clarke, collin Croft, Wayne Daniel and Malcolm Marshall, among others had proved it, even in the slow pitches of India and Pakistan., that too, without using reverse swing.Others, including Jeff Thomson had always struggled in slow pitches. Even in 1975, when he was at his fastest, Jeff Thomson failed miserably in England. He always failed against Pakistan., both at home and in Pakistan. Dennis Lilee and all other bowlers, except perhaps Richard Hadlee, generally struggled in Asia, while West indians thrived and conquered, everywhere.

Jeff Thomson may not be the quickest. He struggled on slow pitches right through his career. And once, the West indians took over., he got the lesson of his life, for sledging and abusing the opposition. Jeff Thomson was the most expensive bowler of his generation, with an economy of 4.56 runs per over., even tail enders used to to tonk him for big sixes

How do they measured the pace of ball then ?? I mean by the speed distance time formulae or something else . Because today we see the speed of balls just after the ball is released not post bounce . If back then they were measuring with the speed distance formulae i can be pretty sure they were 10 to 15 km faster . If not then todays bowlers are raster

Spot on mate. The idiots who think this is the same measuring technique as used today are incredibly stupid. That would mean someone like Josh Hazelwood is quicker than Lillee. Thomson would have been just over 160km, and this is when he wasn't even playing due to a dispute with the ACB, and also AFTER his shoulder injury.

This is presented as if the result is coming up after a couple of seconds like they have now. Actually it took a couple of days for a team of mathematicians to collate and check all the data and get those figures, nothing was instant back then. Most of these guys totally missed the point and figured that banging in a bouncer halfway down the pitch would give them a good result, actually a bouncer is going to be the slowest ball of all as its covering more vertical distance as well as horizontal. Thomson is the only one who understood that if you just bowl full tosses the speed will measure as much higher, its the same half a century later.

I can't help thinking that if they had a batsman at the other end, it could have made them all bowl just a little bit faster! If each bowler had been allowed to choose their most hated batsman to bowl to (or at!), then it would have made things more interesting. I also think that bowling a full over, rather than individual deliveries would have helped the bowlers with rhythmn and accuracy.
@virtuosowins5 ай бұрын
My father used to say Thomson as the fastest and Andy Roberts as the bouncer king. I can see why.
@venkataramanasrivatsasa64705 ай бұрын
Sunny Gavaskar said this but the bowlers of later period are faster and accurate otherwise they wouldn't be able win matches for their teams with the present covered pitches, sports medicine, batsman friendly pitches, change of ball, better athletic fielders and reviews. The hardest period for batsmen was 1970 to 2000. Now it's hardest period for bowlers.
