I remember listening to this while living in Japan; what a place to discover Windham Hill stuff; just perfect. I lived in a small town in the prefecture of Niigata. It's called Snow Country and for good reason. Listening to this while having a delicious cup of coffee was a joy.

My favourite of the four sides, ever since I bought this LP set in 1985. At the time (when I didn't have a CD player), I taped "The Blue Danube" - as I knew I'd play it often - so that I wouldn't wear out the record. This recital and accompanying recording proved to be the most important event, arguably, in Jorge Bolet's career. He'd played in Carnegie Hall before, quite a few times in fact, but 25 February 1974, at half past eight in the evening, turned out to be different. 'I am big, it's just that the public now got me', to adapt a famous line from Sunset Boulevard. 'It was a courageous and unforgettable programme of mammoth transcriptions, ending with Liszt’s version of the Overture to Tannhäuser, Bolet piling Pelion upon Ossa in the incremental programme (as one critic put it). I like the reference to Greek myth: Pelion and Ossa were two mountains in Thessaly, in northern Greece,; two giants, Otus and Ephialtes, tried to pile Pelion and Ossa on Olympus in order to reach the gods and overthrow them. In September 1974, Eric Salzman reviewed the LPs when they were issued. Concerning the transcriptions of Viennese waltzes (side C): 'In a way, it's a pity that so much skill - and I mean musicality, sensitivity, swiftness, sureness, taste, and communicativeness, not mere facility - is tossed away so lightly, so prodigally, on so many soap bubbles.' But I love these "soap bubbles".

This is my all-time favourite Rachmaninov Piano Concerto and a great piano virtuoso from Tamas Vasary [best remembered as a great interpreter of Chopin`s piano music and my other favourite pianist of mine is Artur Rubinstein who also performed Rachmaninov`s Second Piano Concerto with Fritz Reiner conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1959 for RCA Red Seal], with Yuri Ahronovitch conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and it`s recorded at Watford Town Hall, London in September 1975. Produced by Cord Garben. Fantastic recording for me and not to mention the second movement was used for All By Myself written by Eric Carmen [sadly passed away in March this year] and somewhere in the final movement, they used as a song called Full Moon & Empty Arms [written by Buddy Kaye and Ted Mossman, which is actually based on Rachmaninov`s Second Piano Concerto], the best known recording of the song made by Frank Sinatra in 1945. I recommend this recording and pure magic for me. 😇😊💯❤♋
