What's in the center of the wing Is it solid steel???

What kind of pack are y'all running? 2s lion? How much current are you using in a flight? I know servo linkage setup is key but still just wondering how much current is needed to keep driving that elevator at that speed.
@nickhull83
@nickhull83 4 ай бұрын
Yep. 2s 18650 lion. MKS 747s in elevator, inner and outer flaps. MKS 6130s for ailerons. 6 servo wing. There isn’t much load in the elevator and we can fly all day on a single charge.

The current record is 568 MPH. Naturally 600 would be the next big milestone but anything over 568 is a world record. This plane was a light test version, there is a new heavy build ready to go and we are just waiting for some big wind. Thanks for watching and subscribe!

Is there an updraft being used for some of the lift and speed? Where is the momentum being generated from?
@nickhull83
@nickhull83 8 ай бұрын
There is a slight updraft but the speed is from crossing the sheer layer where there are 2 different wind speeds. The acceleration comes from crossing through this wind sheer.

If some one can explain please. I have seen videos of this type of dynamic soaring, riding the uplift in the front of the hill, and the down draft on the back side. Speeds over 200mph. What I am curious about is that the older videos I saw the loops were pretty much vertical, but the loops this gilder is doing are maybe 20 to 30 degrees off of horizontal. Why?
@nickhull83
@nickhull83 4 ай бұрын
I don't know exactly why but I would guess that overtime we have found the best flight path to maximize speed.
@robohippy
@robohippy 4 ай бұрын
I had forgotten about this. Pondering this for a while, I am thinking that maybe by going more horizontal, you get longer time in the updraft and downdraft, so more acceleration....

that's impressive as all hell, congrats! great job!... (Glider gets an 11 out of 10, camera operator gets a 1 out of 10... For any future video recording, put the camera on a tripod and fix it and don't move it (or give the camera to someone who can hold it still).... trying to follow a fast moving object by (a shaking) hand is headache inducing, there's just no reason for it... Just keep the camera set in one aimed spot in the middle, the wide angle of the lens will let the viewers follow the glider with their eyes )

The transonic realm starts at Mach 0.8. This days didn’t have huge wind but the speed record is 568 mph ground speed. Wind speed in 650ish which is in the transonic realm. Finally the air passing over the wing at 500 + is very close the super sonic if not over. ❤

I've been piloting for a bunch of years. Both civil or general aviation aircraft as well as messing with R/C aircraft, powered and sailplanes. I really like the sailplanes but damn, this flying is on a whole different level and seeing this for the first time a few years ago, I'm just blown away! Anybody "in the know" about having a G-meter in one of these machines? The speed is no doubt incredible but the G's has to be off the hook! I'd love to know what it's pulling. Keeping them together has to be an design phenomenon. I seriously question whether I could remain sharp enough keep that thing from just augering into that mountainside!

Have you considered an oblique wing? Some pitch-roll coupling to contend with though more energy efficient.
@nickhull83

The spar system is way too complicated for minimum efficiency gains. This is a 3 piece wing so the joiners and joiner boxes would have to be curved too.
