This is one of my favourite movements and I'm liking this interpretation, Monika 😊 Im waiting for all 20 movements then Ill put them on a playlist to listen like an album :) I dont know if its the way the microphones are placed or whatnot, but I actually like that these recordings are a little 'drier'. I dont know if that makes sense, but I feel like I can bear the notes more clearly than in some other recordings. It helps me to find a deeper level of understanding with this piece.
@monikapalsauskaite97076 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind words! Yes, the intention was to get a clearer sound because Messiaen is very precise with his articulation and it would have been a shame to lose this in the overall harmony, especially in the faster part of the piece.

Monika, how long did it take for you to learn all 20 regards to performance standard?
@monikapalsauskaite97076 ай бұрын
It took me a long time! The very first piece of Messiaen that I ever played was his "Le baiser de l'Enfant-Jésus", back in the third year of my undergraduate degree. Since then, his music has never left me, and when the time came for my doctorate, it was a natural choice to devote myself to this wonderful cycle.
@AllThisOverASliceOfGabagool6 ай бұрын
I can totally understand why the music never left you. I had a similar experience but in another form of music. I'd never been a fan of electronic music. Not sure if you've heard of Aphex Twin or not? Some have some haven't. He's like the J.S. Bach of experimental electronic music. In Y1 of my degree I composed a track which my lecturer said reminded him of Aphex Twin, which was a big compliment as I'd never listened to him! I listened to all his stuff and he had prepared piano pieces and beautiful piano pieces with gorgeous melodies (I really recommend Jynweythek and Avril 14th if you wish to take a listen 😊) So for my final year creative project, I did an album of music that was influenced by Aphex Twin. Never in a million years did I think I would do something like that...but that's the impact Aphex Twin had on me. So in some way, he is to me what Olivier Messiaen is to you.

@monikapalsauskaite9707 Hello Monika, I wonder if you ever got a chance to check out any of Aphex Twin's piano based music (or indeed some of his crazy electronic works - Drukqs is a good album to get a feel for his styles). I've printed the score for Regards du Pere as I'd love to play it one day, but I get confused as there are three staffs, but I only have two hands 😂

Note that he plays this at about 90, not 96 as he indicated in the score (assuming someone else didn't add it, but it is the same in the Peters and DSCH editions). Oops, this is not DSCH performing! His recording is here kzbin.info/www/bejne/sICvnqKZp9iWbNk, and he averages around 96 if not a bit faster.

First of all Monika, this video was mesmerising. The playing of Messiaen was powerful and delicate where it needed to be. I was gripped by your every word and action. I do want to ask though, because I didn't understand the intention behind some of the words being said. One part I recognised from a book of Howard baker plays. What relevance did the horrible nature of some of the spoken word sections have to do with Messiaen and Vingt Regards? My interpretation of the performance that you were taking a work steeped in religious devotion, but then juxtaposing it with compelling speeches that were unsettling, to then somehow prove that something normally regarded as transcendental can have its perception changed by the introduction of strongly spoken words. I know I am probably barking up the wrong tree, so to speak, but I would be very curious to know more about the intent of the performance, if you are willing to share it. Thank you Barry :)

Even though Yvonne Loriod played this faster, and she has to be considered THE authority on this piece as it was written for her, I much prefer the pacing of this as the notes need time to breathe, and prepare one for the intense two hour journey that lies ahead. I really loved this performance 🙂
