Yeah they could have put the electric pump in a spot a bit more quiet. But it’s way safer if you wreck. If the engine is still running with a mechanical pump you can burn yourself to the ground. It won’t stop feeding fuel. Even if you try and shut it down it could diesel on you and still run. With a switch and a (bump) sensor you can shut it down. Or if you are unconscious from the wreck the bump/ crash sensor will cut the power immediately on hard enough impact. Could save your life

One thing about escaping worms is you can use that to harvest if you put a bin with holes on the bottom and food, they will migrate to the top bin.

Thanks for your great explanations. How many times do you think one can keep taking the same breeders and getting them to keep laying eggs?

That’s not enough food for all of those worms. Add more kitchen scraps. That fine powder food is gonna go quick. Put in some whole or long term food to keep them in the bin.

About a month ago I bought 1 lb of red wiggles. Put them in same type container you have. Later heard I should have put them in a 1 Sq ft container.

Not so. Red wigglers will, in the correct environment (bedding, food, temp., proper Ph) will do just fine in a larger container. We have done it successfully many, many times.

Since you have a Food issue with that many worms, it’s a good idea to grow wheat grass, and then harvest wheat grass with the coconut kor and place the grass in the bin and they will have plenty of food and eat, and it will be a lot cheaper for you

Hi there. Someone gave me a bucket of red wrigglers but didn't put any soil or peat in at all and just put vegetable scraps. Is that OK or should I add coco peat to the top?

Peat moss is very acidic and it’s not very environmentally friendly as it’s fast depleting the natural peat beds across the world 😢 I’d definitely choose paper raised compost over peat raised compost for my garden 💕👍🏽

I use the same mix as demo here. I do first run egg shells thru my micro for about 4 minutes. then grind them into a flour. My worms seem to love this mix and go thru it rather quickly. I just recently picked up some alfalfa meal and not sure how they will like it., but just started a small amount in a corner so if it does heat up the worms can move away from it. I also feed kitchen scraps but would like to switch to mostly grains.

Congrats and welcome to vermicomposting! Just keep your bins moist (not soaking wet) and provide good fruit and veggie scraps to feed your worms. They LOVE watermelon and cantaloupe. Don't give tomatoes or onions. Keep it simple at first as you learn.

We purchased them thinking they were red wigglers and believe the majority of them are red wigglers. However, we have had some viewers comment that some may not be red wigglers.

I am little puzzled with pH on the higher/alkaline side (8), acceptable range 5-9, should you add egg shell powder as it will make it further alkaline?

You need to leave a light on in your worm room, that will keep them in their bin. They won't crawl out from under the paper or plastic cover on the bin if a light is left on in the room.

My worms are in the kitchen. A friend asked about the smell and I told her, 'it took about 5 days but then the worms got used to it' My worm bin only got smelly when a worm died in it. Even 1 dead worm in a bin really stinks but the smell helps you to locate the corpse. Fish it out AND any bedding around it, and stick it on your compost help. it's not necessary to empty the whole bin unless several worms have died at once which case you need to clear the live worms out and discard the bedding. I've seen one KZbinr bathe them gently in tepid water in case they have beennin contact with something toxic.

Hi, can we use saw dust mixed in the worm chow instead of cardboard to balance the C:N ratio? should we pre-ferment the chow before putting it into the worm bin? some say that these dry foods are concentrates and produce heat and nasty smell which can kill the worms?"

can survive in winter outside or gotta come inside??
@HomesteadersDiscovery
@HomesteadersDiscovery 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how harsh the winter. Below freezing temps in the bedding is not good. Low temps below freezing for more than a few days in the bedding can freeze and kill the worms. Notice I specified in the bedding and not outside temps. Keep the bedding above freezing temps and you'll be ok.
