at least you figured out what it was and it wasn't random gunfire every morning. Bird probably just wanted to say hi

I'm pretty sure the question was answered in the 8 years that have passed, but: - Woodpeckers don't need wood to peck, despite what their names would tell you (har-har, I know) - They'll peck on most any surface, but they'll choose metal when trying to have a longer/larger reach. In short: it's communicating. - The one shown in this video is establishing to other woodpeckers that a) "I'm here" b) "I'M here, so don't try to claim my turf!" c) "I wouldn't mind if a partner would be interested in a tour of the place, uwu!" - Woodpeckers can peck at around 20 times per second, which is why, for humans, it sounds like you're in the middle of a warzone when they're around - Woodpeckers are cute as fuck Well, there's my trivia for the day. Hope it proves interesting to someone.

This happened on top of my house. But I didn't know it was a bird. It startled me in a major way since inside the house it sounded like the Gatling gun on an A-10 aircraft. Just as loud and terrifying. I would go outside and look for the A-10. Never saw one. But I eventually started noticing a medium size bird, a northern flicker. I've learned to like them. But my cats hate them.

This is a male flicker trying to attract a female. I was awakened 5 times between 5:30 - 7 a.m. in the space of 2 weeks by a jackhammer drilling concrete. After asking all my neighbors (who must have thought I was crazy) I figured out a male flicker was hammering on my chimney cap so that it reverberated down to my furnace in the basement. Apparently a female found his heavy metal rock devastating. He is now busy finding ants for her.

The obvious answer is he was flying overhead when he noticed a few loose rivets. "Reckon I'll just take care of those. No problem. No charge."

We had a Pilleated woodpecker do this to the metal lining inside of the chimney when i was a kid. It was so loud in the house, it scared the crap out of all of us. I lit a small fire in the fireplace, and he flew off. But the damage was done, and my dad and I had to add some metal to that area to keep any embers from going into the holes it made.
