Can turquoise be tumbled knowing the mineral is so soft?
@chains3693 күн бұрын
That is something I have been exploring. So far the answer is no. If anyone has any tips or tricks, please let me know in the comments.

The pieces you cant necessarily use for gem quality jewelry, are still great rock specimens.
@chains36918 күн бұрын
Absolutely! I want to incorporate them into different art pieces. I have been studying stabilization techniques the last couple of weeks. That will be in an upcoming video, soon.

Glad to see you figuring out your mistakes. Tumbling is fun and frustrating. you should run a borax burnish stage afterwards. It will help with the cracks and shine. nice job.

I have been adding Borax during the 3rd and 4th stages. It seems to make them brighter. Thank you!

How do you remove matrix off a large specimen?

I just started to chisel around the turquoise. I was able to remove it.

I think your channel would benefit from a tripod. It makes the viewer seasick to watch the camera spinning about and ducking in and out of focus. Also, we can't see what you're picking up half the time. I can't watch any more because of the optics but otherwise good content and dialogue, thank you.

Thank you for the tips. I just got a tripod!

@@chains369 Oh ace! 😃. I look forward to watching your future videos! 😎 I'm learning how to find crystals, I like metal detecting and rock hounding so this is a natural progression. Basically, if it involves staring at the ground, I'm in! Haha. 😛

Great job! They looked awesome! I think I am going to get myself a nice tumbler set up like yours. It was only somewhat recently that it dawned on me that all of those fun, colorful, glassy polished stones you see for sale, start out just lookin like rocks! LOL So if I can go around and pick up a handful of raw rocks, tumble them, and generally speaking turn out some super sleek tumbled stones, that sounds like a great time to me! Thanks for the inspiration! <3

Three pound barrels usually only hold 2 pounds of rock so you might want to try a bit less grit, especially if you find rocks stuck to the bottom.
@chains369Ай бұрын
That's what I am finding out. It was too much grit in the beginning. Thank you.

Patience is the most important part of tumbling. 😂 we all get impatient, but that is 100% what leads to bad polish and having to start over. slower and longer will always beat faster and shorter.
@djasteress60682 ай бұрын
Also, try a burnish between 3 and 4 to clean out all extra grit from both rocks and barrel earlier rounds. Borax is great for it. Great job though.

That's really lovely. It can't be polished, but you could probably coat it with some resin so the colors show better and it's a bit less delicate.

If you go there again dig a 5x5 square straight down to get to real opal seam. All they are having you do is dig overburden........No opal in that upper layer
@chains3693 ай бұрын
Thanks! I'll give it a try next time.
@lorenweatherby65203 ай бұрын
Hat to say it but where they have you digging is way to high. I used to go 2-3 time a year 2 weeks at a time. Harry had the opal layer exposed about 5-10 deeper. Once they passed and son's wife got hands on....they have you digging upoer layer nothing really in it. I have some amazing pieces of Black Opal. When you hit a piece you will hear it shatter like glass. I haven't been in years How much are they charging to dig in bank? Wish I could send pictures. Hope you had fun.....
@chains3693 ай бұрын
We did have a great time. We have been twice now. First time we dug the tailings. This time, we dug the bank. I believe it was $175 a person to dig the bank for the whole day. 8am to 4pm? You would have to check their website to confirm. We got a handful of decent tiny limb casts. Thanks for the information, we will keep it in mind the next time we go.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy yourself. We did enjoy ourselves very much. There was a ton of people there, lots of vendors and booths, people with their dogs, live music from Wingfield, plus an acoustic stage on the other side of the street. The beer lines were kind of long but understandable with the amount of people there. Also the $10 entry fee is good for all of the days that it's open which was Saturday and Sunday.
