Reminds me of trail rides. The horse up front sees the movement of something up ahead (like a fleeing rabbit or bird, or even a plastic shopping bag) and bolts. Before the rider can get it under control a chain reaction occurs and the whole line of horses try to bolt as well.

When I use a suggestion during hypnosis do I have to "consciously" think about what it means? I obviously "know" what is my expectation with the suggestion, but some mental processes sometimes seem to generate doubt in regard to that in the present moment.

Sir I am reading your book "Science if Self Hypnosis" right now. I am on page no. 54. The first water bucket and balloon experiment worked unbelievably well(bec I had tried it a few more times in past). And it actually felt like I was just giving suggestion, and my arm accepted it, it was automatic.(Also I wasn't relaxed at all 😀) Though some problems were that, I was getting negative feelings about it, that it's dangerous, or it can be harmful. I dont know why, but its just happening 😐

With self-hypnosis, it is all being led by you and your own thoughts; you are the operator and recipient, it is self-regulated. Therefore, encourage and reassure yourself with a real sense of volition and purpose. Communicate with yourself the same way you would a loved one and affirm that this is a simple, safe and beneficial process and experience. Enjoy it, have fun, be curious, adopt a progressive attitude and do not let yourself be a passive recipient to unwanted automatic thoughts, be an active agent in the process - you choose what happens with self-hypnosis. Best wishes, Adam.

@@AdamEasonHypnotist "do not let yourself be a passive recipient to unwanted automatic thoughts" the "do not" part of could be missed by the unconscious therefore isn't it a bad hypnotic command to embed in a paragraph like that? Now while most people's subconscious minds natural self-protection might auto-reject some bad commands, it's still bad practice IMHO

@@sajk Thanks for taking the time to write and share your thoughts. Firstly, this sentence was not intended as a hypnotic suggestion, just explaining a point, my words are not intended to be exactly as they would be delivered within a formal hypnosis session. That said, the entire notion of an 'unconscious mind' is largely disproven, antiquated and does not feature in research or academic literature. I recorded a video that you can find here on my channel in the 'myths and common misconceptions' playlist about the use of the notion of an unconscious mind used by and taught by so many in frontline hypnotherapy fields in particular - it is inaccurate and potentially misleading way to explain the mind and the evidence tends to suggest hypnosis does not work that way, and in particular my own self-hypnosis research and published papers tend to suggest that adhering to such a notion is likely to impede progress with using it. People can miss parts of suggestions without ever needing to suggest your unconscious mind may miss it; anyone may miss any part of any sentence. Thanks again, best wishes, Adam.

I cant help falling asleep😅 what should i do?
@AdamEasonHypnotist
@AdamEasonHypnotist 2 ай бұрын
Initially, I'd say that you sit an an upright, attentive posture and do not lie down. Then make it your aim to be an active agent in the process, and focus upon the steps - then if you are engaging in active hypnotic phenomena, for example, it would be very hard to drift off to sleep. People are more likely to fall asleep if they are passive, overly relaxed and not engaging in any kind of self-directed hypnotic phenomena giving the session some active-alert focus. Track down and download my self-hypnosis roadmap at my college website as it contains some direction on eliciting hypnotic phenomena. Make the sessions short and snappy, elicit hypnotic phenomena where possible, sit upright, be attentive, have a goal and focus for the session, be an active agent in the process and not passive, and it should be easier to properly be engaged. Consider engaging with self-hypnosis when you are fresh initially too - i.e. if you are tired and it is the end of the day, you may be far more inclined to drift off. Hope that helps, best wishes, Adam.

Ah yes, misinformation, myth and misunderstanding about hypnosis creating more of an effect than actual hypnosis in that instance. The profile of hypnosis combined with potent expectations, dressed in hyperbole and delivered via a so-called psychologist at the time, along with Steve Collins' absolute conviction in the way he expressed it was rather compelling.

As my focus deepens during hypnosis my eyes automatically start tensing. When I notice that, should I intentionally relax my eyes, or simply let my body react whatever way it wants when I focus intensely on my suggestions?
@AdamEasonHypnotist
@AdamEasonHypnotist 3 ай бұрын
I don't think you need to focus "intensely" on your suggestions; instead, as you give yourself suggestions just have a potent combination of belief in them and expectation that they'll happen automatically. One of the classic rules of Couéism tends to apply here and you should aim to avoid "the effort error" and not "try" to make the suggestions happen, just trust they'll happen, and make them your reality while being relaxed and gently assured. I think I'd be inclined to relax my eyes if they feel uncomfortable when they tense. But remember that you don't need to be relaxed to respond well to hypnosis. I think I'd accept your ongoing experience and focus more on adopting an effective mindset and not concern yourself too much with small details such as your eyes being tense, unless the tension is a distraction or a problem. Best wishes to you, Adam.

Great breakdown for the uninitiated, which I certainly am. Haha I have a couple of quick questions. I'll try to keep it short. I've just started researching hypnosis, and I know nothing but I'm curious as to how I can change some of my mental barriers. Let's just say life isn't working out so much and I've gotten worse over the years. I desperately need to change my sleeping habits, so I'm starting with that. I've had trouble going to sleep since I was a child, and I can sleep through any alarm. When I lay down, my mind races uncontrollably. Around 20, I worked a job where I had to be up much earlier than usual. So when I laid down at night, I would try to visually "write" in my mind, "must wake at 4am," over and over until I fell asleep. I also set an alarm for 4:15. For a while it worked. I would snap to, right around 4, and beat the alarm. Was I actually hypnotizing myself? I've never thought of it that way, but now I'm wondering. I stopped doing it when I changed jobs, and that was a decade ago. My second question is, if I use hypnosis to change my sleep pattern will it degrade my quality of sleep?
@AdamEasonHypnotist
@AdamEasonHypnotist 6 ай бұрын
Hello Alex, Some of the same structures of self-hypnosis were certainly present in your strategy for sleeping but some of the essential processes for self-hypnosis seem to be missing from your brief explanation so it's tough to give a 100% positive response. With regards to your second question, hypnosis is far more likely to advance your quality of sleep than ever effect it negatively. Any time you are changing or updating your sleep routines (sleep loves routine) can initially effect quality of sleep, but overall hypnosis is far more likely to deepen your quality of sleep and lead to it being more restorative and invigorating. Lovely to hear from you, best wishes, Adam.

Rather than stimulating a positive association with a negative memory, I believe it is more useful to stimulate a neutral response. Theoretically this could enable the prefrontal cortex to exercise its inhibitory effects on the midbrain, and if the PFC is in charge, things tend to calm down. Positive effects tend to be associated entirely differently than negative, so reprogramming to positive from negative is twice as much work as turning negative to merely neutral, according to gross models of neurophysiologic function.

Just recently, when I was attending NLP with Richard Bandler, I heard somebody who was there for the first time, telling one hypnotherapist the following during the coffee break - "I cannot understand why these people are so arrogant. Completely different than yoga or meditation gurus who are calm and humble.” It was a comment, I would guess, about several of Bandler’s remarks to one young German man who was taking notes during his speech to stop taking notes or he will be thrown out of the venue.

I finally got my physical copy of the book and I am loving it. I initially started learning about hypnosis indirectly through the book the Silva Mind Control method. It taught it more as "Alpha State of mind" and made it this mystical state that made it quite anxious for me to get into that state. I decided that the book was old and I wanted a more modern approach. I later realised that Silva's book, while a good one for its time, tried to combine Hypnosis, NLP and a bunch of other stuff while presenting it from an outdated angle. I went on to look for all Self-hypnosis books I could find online. I admit, when I first came across "The Science of Self-Hypnosis: The Evidence Based Way to Hypnotize Yourself", I dismissed it as the cover turned me off a bit. I read multiple books on Self-Hypnosis and all seemed to have something missing. I decided to buy your book and since then I've been hooked and getting better and better each day. I was suffering from extreme overthinking, constantly monitoring, judging and overanalyzing my thoughts. By using the knowledge in your book, combined with a few EFT sessions, I was able to get rid of this habit within 3 days (6 sessions of 10 minutes each). Using looping and quantum looping at the end of each session is also really effective as it allowed my imagination and actual Self-hypnosis skills to improve greatly from session to session. I feel like I have discovered a whole new world of possibilities. Thank you so much, and keep on doing what you do!

From how I understand NLP it is mainly a tool to excerpt patterns of thinking and behavior and structure them in such a way that others can learn to get the same results. A model to create models. Because of the strong focus on teaching the models that were created with NLP instead of NLP itself and the fact that in the beginning mainly focused on extraordinary therapists, it seems to be widely misunderstood. Especially by people who cry for scientific evidence, who's knowledge about NLP rarely goes further than misquoted out of context claims. At least this has been my experience so far. Funnily enough it seems to me like these out of context made up claims are the base for the hypotheses of the research done so far. The presupposition in NLP that if somethings doesn't work, try something else until you find out what works, already works against the scientific method, where something you do, needs to reap the same results in the same way every time. In other words the results must be repeatable. NLP accounts for the differences in every human beings way of structuring their perception of reality. With the scientific method you usually test to get exactly the same results in the same way and if this exact same way doesn't work for a significant amount of people, it will be declared as nonsense. NLP in its core can not be scientifically proven, because it is not real. It was created as a thinking and learning tool to structure your own thinking in such a way that you can create certain results, but in a flexible way. Science wants consistency, NLP wants you to be flexible. Science wants to know why and if something works, NLP wants to know how something works and how to use or change that process. The scientific method is a methodology as is NLP. It is a different method of finding things out about the world. It is like having two different kind of windows in two different rooms. You can perceive the same outside through them and you can not see one window through the other window. The other window is not outside so it must not exist, or does it? It exists, you just can't perceive it from the scientific point of view.
@MrMattias87
@MrMattias87 Жыл бұрын
But still, the evidence for NLP is still very thin to this day, If you really want to know how humans think and perceive reality scientifically then cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience are the ones to go to. There is no justified argument for NLP at all, and for you to do so is foolish simply because there is hardly any evidence to support the efficacy of NLP. It's nothing more but fluffy language that sounds scientific which is how the cognitive dissonance starts up and people getting exploited for money (which is exactly what every NLP coach or course ends up doing since it's a great marketing buzz). Plus much of what NLP teaches isn't exactly inclusive to NLP. The idea of NLP modelling is questionable because if NLPers can model geniuses then why aren't they a genius themselves and rich billionaires? If I can model a helicopter pilot without qualified training does that make me a helicopter pilot if I copied him completely?. If you want to talk about modelling then looking into social learning theory by Albert Bandura is your go to source. That completely contradicts everything that NLP have said about modelling. "NLP in its core can not be scientifically proven, because it is not real. It was created as a thinking and learning tool to structure your own thinking in such a way that you can create certain results, but in a flexible way" You're right it can't be scientifically proven because the NLPers can't be bothered to do so because they feel that they're stuff works because they say so....which is hearsay, a logical fallacy. There still needs to be proof that NLP helps you to structure your thinking and attain certain results. As of now there is none, and so the default position is non-belief until evidence is produced. "The presupposition in NLP that if somethings doesn't work, try something else until you find out what works, already works against the scientific method, where something you do, needs to reap the same results in the same way every time. In other words the results must be repeatable. NLP accounts for the differences in every human beings way of structuring their perception of reality" You appear to equate the scientific method with that of NLP and that's a false equivalence fallacy because NLP is not a proven method. You've contradicted yourself there and you just said that NLP cannot be scientifically proven, if it cannot be scientifically proven then how can you even suggest that the scientific method is on par with NLP....where's the evidence? "Science wants to know why and if something works, NLP wants to know how something works and how to use or change that process. The scientific method is a methodology as is NLP. It is a different method of finding things out about the world." No science is a proven methodology, NLP is just pseudoscience garbage that sells itself as a science. So it's hardly a methodology. "It is like having two different kind of windows in two different rooms. You can perceive the same outside through them and you can not see one window through the other window. The other window is not outside so it must not exist, or does it? It exists, you just can't perceive it from the scientific point of view." I call bs on that because you actually need to test out your suspicions. You need to actually investigate to confirm your perceptions through evidence finding to either prove or disprove your own perceptions. Perception alone just won't cut it. And if someone comes along and presents better evidence with better investigations then the matter is settled. That's how the scientific point of view works. You can't just perceive off the surface without any further investigation...that's called naive realism according to social cognition.

I have figured out the best way to serve my local market is to offer the individual session at a higher hourly rate, and the "prepaid series" are reduced a bit when the hours are broken down. When they purchase the series, I time the payments so they pay in intervals of "every other session", this way they don't pay for time they don't use and I don't have to refund anything to them. And this helps them feel that they are in control of the budgeting. It also is my way of answering people who want a discounted rate ... yes, buy the package and you'll save an average of $30 off the hourly rate.

It's a very interesting debate indeed Adam. I was pondering over this myself many times as well. It's kinda like the chicken or the egg debate isn't it? :). In today's fast paced environment we want the "instant version" of everything. Instant soup, coffe, connections, answers, solutions. It seems like we are all running out of time.!? :) Unfortunately the demand extended to this kind of "therapy" as well and it is growing tremendously. Marketing "gurus" of course could clearly see this demand and supply trend and don't make it any better by advising their students "be different" by offering a much shorter time frame than others. And of course by now the market is flooded by one offs therefore as a new therapist it's hard not to fall into this "super speedy, mega hyper, quick"trend. Anyway! Keep swimming against the current my friend! I love your debates and investigations! They really changing how I look at things and such ,things I look at are changing in the good way.:)

For me, I prefer science-based accounts to the “just so” stories still extant in the field. The daft thing is that it's not too difficult to give a current and accurate scientific account yet there are trainers in the hypnotherapy field who perpetuate accounts which don't have scientific consensus. What is interesting is the response I find I get when mentioning that these are myths. A myth I would have added that bugs me a lot, especially when I see it being taught is the idea of people having a conscious mind and an unconscious or subconscious mind. In my own hypnotherapy Facebook group I used to run I would get comments about not being a 'true Ericksonian' because I didn't believe in the unconscious mind. I would talk about things being conscious and non-conscious and how we have unconscious processes, but not a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. When I would talk about analogue marking and how people can pick up on subtle cues like looking in one eye and the other etc, as Emma mentioned, it would be common to discover people had heard that you do this to talk to the left brain or right brain and would often get asked which brain should they be talking to and marking out suggestions to. I would explain that my understanding of it is that we are very good at non-consciously picking up on patterns and responding to them, like people can do with neurofeedback and as long as the therapist is consistent with the pattern then the person can recognise for example that when you look into their left eye you are marking out an idea of suggestion. Something I am curious about it how well it works in reality, analogue marking by looking into one eye for the presentation of ideas, because although I know it works very well, I personally can't help but make other changes as well, like changing tonality or pace of speech or adding slight pauses etc, possibly making subtle head movement for me to look into one eye or not etc, so although, especially in my earlier days, I've used the idea of looking in one eye when presenting ideas etc, I can't make myself do just that with no other behavioural change at the same time to be able to know how effective that one thing actually is... For all I know it could have no effect at all and all the effect could be from my other behaviours or the combination of behaviours and the only idea I can think of for an experiment would have to involve a non-hypnosis person reading a memorised script where they have also memorised to look in an eye on certain words or phrases and to have the same script read perhaps just looking forward at the person. But even then I feel that the extra thought would mean the person would probably do behaviours beyond just looking into an eye, even if it is a slight pauses or vocal change because they think about that they now have to look into the eye and back again. Maybe someone can create an avatar on a computer screen that is speaking a script fed into it and with half the people it is programmed for the eyes to move slightly as if looking into one of the viewers eyes and to the other half it just looks straight ahead, so the spoken word are identical and there are no other cues than this... These are the things that play on my mind... There are so many things I've dropped over the years because I've felt they are redundant, like full on 'inductions' and lots of complex language pattern use... I love the sound of complex hypnotic language patterns being used and think it can sound poetic, but it is unnecessary and although some people love the sound of it and so do request I use it with them, for many I feel it can sound show offy or like I'm trying to be manipulative, which I feel is likely to get me worse outcomes (which I know is also what the research into using indirect or conversational hypnosis techniques shows)... Love when I see a new video, glad there have been some new ones popping up lately to watch... All the best Dan...

There's also the foster child of diet and supplements, the middle ground that might look like a no man's land at times. Take Oliver Sacks Awakenings, for example: they have applied nuclear doses of l-DOPA until the patients would burn out, but I see no mentions of any milder and safer dopamine/serotonin precursors. Seems like the medical side tries to find the strongest drug first, to prove that it works better than others perhaps, and you need a doctor then to monitor for overuse and side-effects, whereas the milder drugs are thrown away with the bathwater as either too cheap, less patentable or lacking the oomph. Darren Schmidt mentions now and then ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ66pYttZrpqma8, kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpOuZoR_mamBbrM, etc ) that psychological conditions are often treatable with supplements and/or diet. Does not the diet affect the same chemical ratios that the hardcore drugs would? But who is seriously using nutrition as an adjunct to psychotherapy? Can you point me at them, and share in percents the comparative availability of such practitioners? Or is it just the pure wordplay on one hand and the patented drugs on the other one that are, by default, offered to us? Doing an N-of-1 on myself I've used both the prescription drugs, such as l-DOPA combined with supportive inhibitors, and over-the-counter precursor supplements (Tyrosine, L-phenhylalanine, L-tryptophan, 5-HTP), and anecdotally the supplements are faring better (fried eggs are better than eggs burned to a crisp, so to speak). Remaining a very useful tool in my toolbox. Even the Vitamin C is useful ( cf. medicalxpress.com/news/2020-10-whole-fruit-vitamin-boosts-vitality.html, etc ), for example. I wonder if that direction is ignored by psychotherapists because it sounds as a grandmother-level advice?

You make some very valid and important points Artem - tough for me to fully exhaust any topics along with related topics within a single video, I'm sure you'll appreciate that. As an aside, I once worked with a specialist nutritionist who helped support, guide and direct me during some mental health challenges I had. It was a very useful and beneficial experience. Thanks for taking the time to write and share your thoughts, best wishes, Adam.

When you refer to poop out...Eric gentry explains that trauma or depression pushes through to try and heal...and doctors up the dose ..often its totally unnecessary and therapy alone can heal. But we live in a society where we are lazy and think popping a pill is better or easier than engaging..and some people feel cheated if they leave the gp without prescriptions. I totally agree medicine has its place and its a complex issue....bit like the * non deceptive mega placebo* explanation ! Fantastic weekends learning ...thank you! Xx

Thanks for sharing Emma. The mentality of taking medication is absolutely one that western societies seem very invested in, agreed, but for many, taking medication can save a life in those initial stages in particular. It is indeed a complex issue. Best wishes to you, Adam.

Very interesting and complex subject, which I feel you’ve covered very thoroughly. I personally love the positive approach you suggest that non medication treatment offers, however as you also iterate, some mental health conditions absolutely require medication, at least in order to initiate treatment. Thank you for another great video.

I think so because it was thrust upon a generation and it's caused alot of damage, just my point of view. It can help but it's very harmful.

Thanks for taking the time to write and share your thoughts Pat. I think it is tough to side too strongly on either side of such a topic. I do not think medication is universally harmful, it certainly can be for some, but for others, it can help greatly. My best wishes to you, Adam.

Very thought-provoking, Adam! I think many hypnotists deny the science of hypnosis because scientists make us realise how little we really do know! It's my belief that the success (or lack thereof) of hypnosis is down to the confidence, congruence & prestige of the hypnotist and of course the rapport established with the client. I'd be interested to see how such qualia are measured scientifically and suggest this may be another reason science is denied by so may hypnitists; how do you allow for such variance? We all fear that which we do not yet understand. I like to think I challenge my own bias by looking at the things that are uncomfortable and challenging to me, but maybe that's part of my bias! I've just finished Dr. Ian McGilchrist's 'The Master and His Emissary' - a fascinating and challenging read that certainly relates to our field. But I guess I am more 'technical' in my approach than many hypnotists. Some of them will succeed where I may not - and vice-versa; perhaps knowledge is not always power or perhaps I just like to use big words to establish my own prestige? This is getting too deep! Please keep up the good work. Keep us on our toes and please know that your work is valued and is of course valuable to the world of hypnosis. Whatever that may or may not be! 😉

Thanks for taking the time to write and reply Steve, much appreciated. The science method does seek to isolate variables as much as it is able in order to explore the mechanisms that make what we do successful. Typically, this is very difficult in the psychology field in general and certainly so in the hypnosis field. Good research should be able to offer up efficacy rates according to standardised protocol, and then those outcomes ought to be able to be raised as a result of many other extra therapeutic factors, such as those you mention here, but also including the therapeutic alliance, expectation, and so on. many thanks again, best wishes to you, Adam.

Hi Emma, I'm pleased this was useful. The evidence exposing the left brained/right brained type of ideology is all out there to be discovered on Google Scholar or PubMED for starters. Best wishes to you, Adam.
