I'm sorry to hear that your wife was a casualty of the "Down Winders". I'm all too familiar with that as my FIL received a small settlement from that but he passed away after fighting cancer partially due to being a "Down Winder". My father worked at the test site for most of his career and only a few years ago died from brain cancer. I have no doubt that "Down Winders" had a part in his cancer too. :(

Want to buy cheap land in Elko? Well, I already went through that process. Good luck being able to build what you want out there. Blows me away how a little town in the middle of nowhere has such strict building codes. Insanity. But yet there are tons of illegals flocking into that area.
@IdahoEagle77

I don't know who you think you're fooling. Elko is primarily a gold mining hub, not a major business center. It's extremely difficult to find a good paying job there, as it's literally in the middle of nowhere.

If you are willing to work and put in the effort, there are good jobs and even better opportunities will come your way. Attitude is everything. AND oh yeah, be ready to adjust to waking up between 3:30-4 am to make a commute to a mine site. Mining jobs generally pay very well, and the better you learn your trade the quicker you will advance. Don't show up in rural communities complaining and expecting a handout.

@@IdahoEagle77 Rural communities tend to lean much more conservative than liberal. You have to be pretty self-sufficient and have a good head on your shoulders to make sure you can survive and thrive in such environments. People in rural communities will definitely lend someone a hand when needed, but they will not tolerate professional moochers and beggars. Take care.

@@IdahoEagle77 The crime isn't bad. We live in an old neighborhood too --no rich folk! Maybe that's why no one comes around to bother anyone. On the other hand, the humidity is killer! After we left Elko we lived in Vegas for a couple years prior to coming to Florida. True fact: it is easier to deal with 115-117 deg F temps in Vegas (very dry heat) than like Florida is right now in the mid 90's with wicked humidity. Sometimes it doesn't even make sense to shower as you don't always dry off before putting on your underwear.

@@robinhoodloom5795 Yes, there is a hospital in Elko. The only one within about a 150-200 mile radius (or more depending on the direction you travel). There is some low cost land, but you better be ready to live off grid. The biggest challenge is going to be water. Very little rainfall. The next issue is out 7-8 month winter and below zero temperatures. You absolutely have to winterize your trailer or camper if that's what you plan to live in on those lots. Fun fact though: There is actually lots of fresh water underground --the challenge is drilling down to it. Very expensive wells and you need a lot of pump power to get it to the surface. Still, I miss living there. We are staying in Florida as long as my wife's mom is still kicking. Then we are going to move back west somewhere to be near our kids and grandchildren.

30 years ago, there were many different mining companies and they were all awesome to their employees.
