I was a Crew Chief 77/81 when I tell people about this they don’t believe me. I was on a CH-53D and it was the meanest badass thing out there. Nothing sounds like a 53. Ohraaaa

This is an excerpt from the 1982 BBC Horizon documentary called ‘The Chopper’ it’s available in full on KZbin The voiceover on the original clip just says, possibly incorrectly, it is a tail rotor failure. The very short clip afterwards, seen in full in the BBC documentary is an onboard film from a tail rotor failure of a Bell 47 over Sydney. The Horizon programme got me into helicopters, but I got out of light helicopters and grounded myself before the R22 could sneak up and kill me.

The flapping rotors of all choppers are very temperamental and don't like the pilot to throw the machine around.

We had a FH-1100 at my FBO. It was a great helicopter. Access to the engine compartment was years ahead of its time. The whole cowling would roll back along a track on the tail boom.

No one knows for sure. Hiller stuck to the company lime and said it was pilot error. However a colleague of my father's and also an experienced naval helicopter pilot said this was very highly unlikely and if looked to him as if there was a failure in the linkage to the rear rotor. Well never know for sure, but I'm the clip when it comes out of the glare, there is a definite twitch in the tail before it loses control. Good luck with your project.

Saludos.
