I'm shocked not just by the messed up stock levels but by the fact that an exclusive edition is reported to make use of stock art. If true, that's the publishers profiteering at the expense not only of the writer but of artists

I was interested in fourth wing well before it released and was excited when I got my hands on the pretty copy with the stenciled edges. I'm one of those weirdos that likes my books to match. I generally stay out of booktok so I had no idea how bad the Iron Flame fumble was and I was annoyed that edition was just plain spray paint because I dared to wait a week before spending my money 🙄. That being said, I was happy with the aesthetic on Onyx Storm and decided not to take any chances this time and I ordered that bad boy when it first hit pre-order in March 2024. I was a little annoyed by the target release because I don't shop there and I just went "Oh well." But alas, the chaotic aftermath of this release has been... infuriating and entertaining. I think its a shame that some authors take the shiny pile of gold instead of thinking long term about their reputation. She had booktok/bookstagram in a choke hold, that could have taken her so far without having as much shade thrown at her name. It's also wild how publishers don't care about their authors because in this case, it was on them and she's absolutely taking the fall for it just weeks/days before her release 🤷🏽‍♀

Target employee here (didn't work release) A major issue occurred for people who ordered the book for same-day pickup: unfortunately, our system doesn't always guarantee your items will be picked before the store opens, therefore the lines of people got their hands on the already limited quantities, while workers trying to pick them for online orders had nothing left to pick and had to mark the book as unavailable. I think a lot of people want to individually blame us workers, but we genuinely have no control of the inventory ESPECIALLY once the doors open. I had people the day prior asking me for copies and demanding I get them out of the back for them (I would immediately lose my job if I did this) so I can only imagine how rough it was for the workers who worked the day of release.

Foiled covers and sprayed edges make no sense when you can't see them on the shelf.

What they did with the Target edition felt scummy to me. If they'd released this special edition months from now, I would accept it as part of doing business for the publishers, but this felt different. Thankfully I don't care enough to have a specific edition of this book, I just want to read it. There is basically only one series I have several editions of the books and it's not this one.

Don't why anyone would wanna go crazy for a book edition that's use someone's else's art in it 🤦🏽‍♀️ so people are supporting a art stealer. No thank you 😑 if you really want to read it then just get the normal version instead of the editions.

To be honest, I'm not surprised. I'm not a fan of Fourth Wing either, but this isn't the first time Target has handled something like this poorly. Remember the Target Stanley Cup fiasco that happened about a year ago? They announced a special item that is popular then act surprised when they sell out quick or when people have fist fights over it. It's either just repeated poor planning on Target's end to not have enough, or maybe it is planned to get people to talk. Any publicity is good publicity after all for these big businesses. I have bought a few books from Target, but I think people have to remember that books are not Target's specialty. Target has books yes, but they are not a bookstore that can cater to hyped book releases anyway. It could be another reason why Target may not have been prepared. I have bought 4 books from there, 2 were Target special editions, but I didn't get them because of that. It's more like I just happened to be in Target one day, decided to check out the book aisle and noticed they had books that have been on my read list, so I just decided to get them while I was there. Plus, they were hardcovers and I'm not a fan of paper backs at all, so that was another factor.

I refuse to buy from a scalper, and i hope they lose money on this and cant return the books after they find out it gets rest9cked

I had work, so I couldn’t go at opening. I ordered the regular one, thinking there wasn’t much chance of the exclusive, and my shopper snagged me an LE. 😭

I work at a Target and I went in at 8 AM yesterday for work and there were people who were lined up outside for this. That edition was gone within ten minutes of me clocking in at 8 (when the store opened).

I keep thinking oooh boy. I cant wait to find these at thrift stores. There are a few books. I think look good. I am not a big fan of the book. I will pay five dollars and under for a used good conditon. They can be a cool looking display piece for cheap

RESELLERS ruined this the RESALE community is disgusting paraites that need to be shunned. there should be a LAW making it punishable by a VERY LARGE $$ FINE for reselling any item if you are NOT a licenced seller.

I’m in Minnesota and girls were standing outside in -19 degree weather to try and get the target edition only to find out the store had no copies available due to people already ordering the target exclusive copies at 2:00am for pickup. The store only had 30 copies available to start with, and I feel like Target either really underestimated the demand the book would have or they did it on purpose to create a buzz.

I just have the normal copy I not care what the book look like for the outside it's all about the story inside.

I am so sick of sprayed edges. Just give me the book

special editions crush now because (whether people admit it or not) most judge books by their covers lol and if you add a special edition on top of that, forget it. Demand is even higher. I used to be a wait for the paperback girl becuase of pricing but now that they release hardbacks with the special edition sprayed edges, etc. it's basically a decoration so I don't mind buying the hardbacks.

People have so lost the plot when it comes to what actually matters. I want to bury my head in distractions as much as anybody, so I get why people get caught up in their chosen escapism. That said, we only feed and strengthen the beast when we let it so obviously manipulate us to buy more and more. I dont know how we can organize as a people to stand up against what’s happening in America.

The PS5 analogy doesn't really work. If you didn't get a PS5, you couldn't play PS5 games at all. This is closer to the PS5 30th Anniversary Edition sold out. You can still play PS5 games on the regular console, and they play exactly the same, but it doesn't look quite as nice sitting on your shelf. As a reader who reads exclusively on ereaders, I couldn't care less about special editions. I didn't when I read physical copies, either. I mean, you're paying for the content of the story; the cover is just the wrapping paper the story comes in -- it's all but irrelevant to me.

I had gotten a copy before the website crashed and everything only to be told it was cancelled because of an error on their side. It was an hour after they told me too so I wasn’t able to secure another copy or go in person (In Texas and the roads were icy) They said their gonna restock one day (Had to ask their customer service thingy cause my friends copy got cancelled too)

They did the same in the UK with the only limited edition (available from Waterstones). A notification was sent through their app and on Insta (I have both, but didn't get the notifications) and the book sold out in minutes. No second printing is planned...so that's it!

I'm not a fan of fourth wing and in my humble opinion (that doesn't really matter, you do you) it's just another cringe romance with fantasy backdrop. That said, these books are beautiful, props to the designer really. These are one of the prettiest book covers I've ever seen. If I was a fan I would totally want a copy of all standard, limited, special editions and whatever they have there. 😂

will be getting mine at a thrift store in few weeks haha for now im not going online too much to avoid spoilers and ordered a phon e case from burga with dragons, that makes it even😅

Am I a strange person who doesn’t care about special editions ? I just care about getting the next book in a series or one I want to try out .. I dunno maybe I’m just old and don’t understand this trend I feel like the people who make these editions know what they are doing and are benefiting massively from it

Lol I buy target exclusive funko pops and they are always limited runs. Almost never get restocked.

Don’t worry, you should be able to find them at the thrift store after a few weeks. That’s where I found my copies.

Yup I went to the store and it was impossible to get it 😢 sold out in a second , not enough copies and I get it’s not limited but I really wanted to make sure I had it. Had to over pay for it online . None of the targets around here had any copies left.

I just found out that the artwork is not original and they got it from a 2019 magazine and just made some color changes. How disappointing!

Yeah I mean I don't see how anyone didn't see this happening at some point. Book influencers will literally post videos showing off their extensive collection of the same book. They buy five to ten copies of Fourth Wing because they have to have every single special edition that exists. Book publishers see those videos and see a way to take advantage of readers, and just like every other corporation out there. They do exactly that no one is going to convince me that. This wasn’t always the original plan announce the Target exclusive edition. A week before the release date and hope readers will keep the original deluxe edition pre-order. They already placed and go out and buy the Target exclusive as well.

So incorrect the book you showed is the limited Target edition that will not have more copies made. But they will have the deluxe copy available

i feel everyone that could not get it or that the pre order is late like mine xD ( 31.1-3-2 it should come) i wonder why i pre ordered when i can't get the copy on the release or with luck one day early :/ But i feel bad vor the RY she has nothing to do with the delay and so much ppl. are hating on her for this issue

I don't care about this series, but I absolutely love all the choas. I do feel bad for people who managed to secure their order on the Target site, only to be told a few hours later there wasn't enough stock and their order was cancelled. Target definitely did not handle this well. Also, I think I saw somewhere that, currently, there were no plans to restock the Target edition.

I'm hoping you're right and they restock the book but I'm so mad I couldn't get it. The colored map defenitelly do matters to me :(
