I did this in 2019. I siphon 3 times a year and add declorinated water when it needs it, careful not to fill too high as it messes with the light.

Do the plants grow OK with the biohome substrate?

This is a used 4 gallon BiOrb I found with all the contents and like new in the box. I removed the carbon&zeolite and replaced with smallest biogravel bit & bacteria gel beads, added a set of pond filter foam doughnuts, & 2 pounds of biohome gravel. The BiOrb was very scuffed, scratched, & has 2 weird spots of heat damage maybe that dent in and that also frosted over the plastic around the shallow dents. Rubbing compound followed by polishing compound took all the scuffs, scratches & foggy frost right off & made it super shiny. This is day 1. The plants are java fern, amazon sword, nana petites, cabombas, & some duck weed. I have 2 more pounds of biogravel to put in & some cryptocoryne red. With the pond filter foam under the gravel, it really needs to have 4 pounds of biogravel to cover well and have live rooted plants. I have large bare foam spots under the pieces of slate. So far it is running well with stock air pump&air stone driving the under gravel foam filter upgrade. This project was inspired by the PondGuru

I have just got a biorb classic 30 with many parts missing, including the filters and bubble tube and substrate, just ordered the biorb stuff then came across the upgrade video, would you recommend the upgrade over the original? And what plants have you got?

@@shailer2000 For sure the upgrade otherwise super hard to maintain and more like death ball for fish and plants. The upgrade is easy and keeps it super clean water quality. Plants and fish thrive. I have settled on java moss, java ferns, red coreopsis I think is the spelling and anubis nana. All the plants do well with the low level led light it came with and some daily natural window light. The 30 might have the reef one light but I dont know if it is any brighter. Happy BiOrbing!

How´s your tank going after 6 months? Do you have algea problems? Do your shrimps still live?

Going great, thanks for asking. I have only had a bit of algae and it is easy to remove/scrub with a magic eraser attached to a long chopstick. I have scrubbed twice since set up. The shrimps are well and I was successful at breeding betta so there is a tiny betta baby in the biorb now as well. Very relaxing and enjoyable to watch. Its a super low maintenance system with the biogravel/ foams upgrade.

This is day 2. An additional 2 pounds of biohome bio gravel & final 2 crypto red added. Also added an air valve to help regulate the air flow. The biorb classic 15 with filter upgrade appears to be working very well. 2 gallons of water from Horney Guppy Grotto was used for part of the start up water, 3 tiny guppy babies came along with the water & so are the first inhabitants of the BiOrb.
