My foster son is at continuous feeds (24hrs a day with 4hrs off. That 4 hrs can be an hour here or there, or 4 hrs straight. I change that daily, depending on my busy schedule) so what I'm saying, is he's 1yrs old, rate is 42, and I just fill the feeding bag as it gets low (8ozs) and then when I feel like stopping it for an hour, I do so. It's easier for me to do that than to figure out the math. Just fill your bag no more than 8ozs at a time and just keep an eye out for near empty, then you don't have to prime each time either. Flush with whatever amount you like, I prefer 5ml flush, before and after feeds so he's getting some water intake and making sure it doesn't clog. Now I know that might not be your thing to do it like myself, but it works for us. If they throw up, it's to much. Either lower rate, or break more often. He has a GJ tube by the way. We have been doing 45 rate the last few days and he's tolerating that, but at night I go down to 42 again. Something about night time feeds seem to make them up Chuck more. Again, this is for basically continuous feeds, but working up to more time off.

So if I want to run the pump on infinity mode, I can divide the amount of time by 60 to get the rate? I need to know this because my baby currently is allowed only so much by mouth and the rest goes through the tube. He doesn't always finish the bottle, so I want to pour what is left in the bottle into what remains in the bag. I don't know how much is left in the bag as the pump was running while he was bottle feeding. At this point I want to run the pump on infinity mode for however much time is left since he started. So for example if I want to run the remainder over 30 mins, would I set the rate to .50 ?

I'm so confused...I need to feed my son 140ml over 1.5 hours...so what would the rate be?
@PediatricHomeService
@PediatricHomeService 4 жыл бұрын
In order to calculate feeding rate, you divide the total volume to be delivered by the desired time to deliver it in. In this case, 140 mL is the total amount to deliver and the time in which you would like to deliver it is 1.5 hours. So the calculation would be 140 mL divided by 1.5 hours which equals 93.33 mL per hour. Depending on the type of food pump you are using, you can set the rate with decimals or you can round up to 94 mL per hour. I hope this helps!

I have been trying to pump 7 ounces in 1 hour but I keep getting different numbers. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Could anybody help me?
@PediatricHomeService
@PediatricHomeService 4 жыл бұрын
To set the feeding rate, you must first convert the ounces into mLs. To do this, take the number of ounces multiplied by 30. In this case, this would be 7 x 30 = 210 mL. You can then continue with the feeding rate calculation. To do this, you divide the total volume to be delivered by the desired time to deliver it in. In this case, 210 mL is the total amount to deliver and the time in which you would like to deliver it is 1 hour. So the calculation would be 210 mL divided by 1 hour which equals 210 mL per hour. We hope this helps. Thank you!

I don't understand. If dose divided by time equals rate. I tried 474(ml) divided by 360(min) = 1.32. what am I doing wrong? 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️
@PediatricHomeService
@PediatricHomeService 4 жыл бұрын
@Mrs. B. Great question! We would recommend using hours vs. minutes because the unit for the feeding rate is mL per hour. If you take 474 mL divided by 6 hours (which is 360 min) you get a rate of 79 mL per hour.

Thank you so much for making this video. I have a hole in the base of my brain so it's hard for me to understand things. I'm 40 years old and in December I a feeding tube placed. Then I lost insurance and now I'm on myown. I purchased a feeding pump for $500 on Amazon and I just can't figure out the correct settings. I'm supposed to have 1,000 mL of food a day. I just guess when it comes to setting the pump numbers. I think I can go up to 500 mlwith food and same with water. But the water button says how many mls per hour that's where it confuses me. I probably don't make much sense, I apologize! LOL The pump is dual and they have a water bag and a food bag.anywat, I love the song you made in your video, I'll never forget that 😁💜

on process of making a ventilator....i want to know if pressurised air is given to the humidifier and also do the air flowing through the humidifier stay in the humidifier for some time to get heated aand humidified
@PediatricHomeService
@PediatricHomeService 4 жыл бұрын
The proper direction of air flow should be from the ventilator, through a heated humidifier, to the patient. The air does not need to be in the humidifier chamber for any set amount of time. Simply passing through the chamber should be sufficient as long as the humidifier is strong enough to deliver air to the patient at 37 degrees Celsius. Using a tubing circuit that has a heater wire inside the inspiratory limb will help maintain the temperature and humidity as the air travels from the humidifier to the patient. If a heater wire in the tubing is not available, expect large amounts of condensation in the tubing as the air cools as it travels from the humidifier to the patient. More condensation will be produced with longer tubing than shorter tubing. Even with a heated wire circuit, expect some amounts of water condensation. It is very important to ensure condensation is always draining away from the patient connection. Even a small amount of water flowing into the patient may have very negative clinical effects on the patient.

Does anyone know the (dose) if my (rate) is 180 and my bag is 1200 filled up completely.. I upped it from 150 to 180 because I'm 20 and don't want to be connected to it for extreme amounts of (time)
@PediatricHomeService
@PediatricHomeService 4 жыл бұрын
The dose setting depends on hang time which depends on the type of formula mixture being used. Hang times are typically either 4 or 8 hours: (1) If you use a formula that allows for an 8 hour hang time and your feeding rate is 180 mL/hour, you can enter the full volume of 1200 mL as your dose. This would result in a feeding period of a little over 6.5 hours. (2) If you use a formula mixture that only allows for a 4 hour hang time and your feeding rate is 180 mL/hour, your dose would be 720 mL for the first 4 hours. Following that you could pour the remaining 480 mL into the feeding bag and set the dose for 480 mL and run it at the rate of 180 mL/hour. This second feeding period would then take a little over 2.5 hours. After these two feeding periods, the entire volume of 1200 mL will be delivered. Thanks!

My baby's pump seems like is not working properly..my baby's dose is 5oz and should be feeding in 30 minutes but takes about 3 hours to finish...i already replace it and is doing the same..what am I doing wrong..he has a mic-key balloon
@PediatricHomeService
@PediatricHomeService 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! We would first recommend checking to make sure the pump feeding rate is set correctly. In order to deliver 150 mL (or 5 oz) in 30 minutes, you would need a pump feeding rate of 300 mL/hour. If the feeding rate is set for 300 mL/hour and it is still taking 3 hours to deliver, I would recommend trying a different feeding bag. There are times when feeding bags can be defective and cause errors with the delivery of feedings. If you are continuing to have issues with the feedings even after changing out the feeding bag, I would check with your equipment provider or the pump manufacturer about ways to clean the food pump. Depending on the type of pump, there are ways to clean the sensors which can correct issues with feeding delivery as well. For example, running a wet cotton swab along the track where the feeding set is inserted into an Infinity food pump can be a resolution in some instances. Thanks for reaching out!
