One of the tricks I used for completing the Delicate Flower quest (and thus can be redone here) was to A, set a Dreamgate so I can go straight back to reduce the backtrack time, and B, plot the path I need to take prior, and kill everything that spawns between the start and end point. Since enemies only respawn if you die, use a bench, etc, you can cautiously pick your way around the map. Also if I remember clearly, you CAN take the Tramway as it isn't as rough a fast travel point as the Stag.
