Without a wired keyboard this doesn't work. Gosh Apple make a factory reset much more difficult than it should be.

in this case will swap memory will use the new large ssd for swap memory or will keep the internal original mac ssd to swap memory?
@Poliwager10 күн бұрын
Just heard about this change. This will definitely be convenient for formatting SD cards or other things that need a quick wipe. I heard people complaining about the possibility of "accidentally" erasing a disk, but it seems pretty hard to accidentally do all the steps after hitting the button in the menu.
@macStudioA10 күн бұрын
My thoughts exactly. In my opinion It’s much easier to accidentally erase a disk using Disk Utility, that’s why I personally think that this “Erase Disk…” method is by far the quickest, easiest, and safest way to erase and reformat a storage device on a Mac using macOS Sequoia. Just wished they (Apple Developers) introduced this feature in all macOS versions much more earlier.

If I am doing a clean install and want to use a back up in migration assistant to restore apps and such, should I choose also to restore "System Settings? I am doing a clean install because at start up it lags while churning through what I am guessing is leftover junk.

Create the same installer disk for Sequoia using the method in the video. Once done make sure you've backed everything to Time Machine first, then search: Apple menu > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. At the bottom click Transfer or Reset, and then click Erase all content and settings. Once the computer is reset leave the USB installer plugged in and turn off your Mac. Turn on the computer (into recovery mode) and select the installer from the menu.

Piggy backing on jaredjohnson5976, I was able to repeat his solution on my Studio Max. I could not boot up when plugged into the first USB -C port after several attempts. Then I tried the second USB port and it worked! LOL.. I planned on using this as my main drive. And occasionally boot up the internal SSD for updates. I was unsuccessful using Carbon Copy Cloner at first. Then I stumbled on this video. I wonder if CCC will worked if I used the 2nd USB port ?

TLDR: For MacBook Air M1 running Sonoma, make sure to plug your external drive into the second USB-C port. The first port’s configuration might prevent you from booting from the external drive. I struggled with getting Sonoma to boot from an external SSD for online test proctoring. Despite multiple reboots and redownloads, the drive wouldn’t boot. It either prompted me to erase everything or wouldn’t even show up as an option. Finally, I found a Stack Exchange solution: switch the USB port. The fix was simple-plugging the drive into the second USB-C port worked perfectly. I’m relieved it’s resolved and hope this helps someone else!

Hi, thanks for a nice guide:) I have a question, is it possible to move all apps and data from internal ssd to external (using migration assistant for example? Maybe time machine backup will work?) Also, how to use some part of an external ssd as a swap? Imac m3 4 ports 8/256
@macStudioAАй бұрын
Thank you @vladimirpyatkevich5674. Unfortunately I’ve not tested the scenario to your questions, related to migration assistant and TM, same goes for swap. As I don’t have any spare external SSD to test your questions , therefore cannot comment if it’s possible. The only advice is to use trail and error and test it on your end, that’s the only suggestion I can give at the moment, got a lot of projects currently working on. If you do try on your end, please let me know, as I would like to know how you made out. Sorry cannot be more helpful.

What happens if the external hard drive that stores your Time Machine backups fails or is lost? Will all of your previous backups be gone as well?
@emranmdeАй бұрын
Nice video ❤ If I lost the backup ssd or disconnected how should I found my backup ssd on Time Machine?
@macStudioAАй бұрын
Thank you @emranmde. As to both questions posted. 1. If TM backups fails or SSD lost, then would have to create another backup. TM backups are not cloud based but hardware based. 2. If TM External SSD is disconnected, no problem. Because initial back drive has already beed identified when created initial TM backup, it activates again when SSD is reconnected. In fact that’s the way I do my monthly backups, after monthly TM backup is completed, I disconnect external SSD and reconnect on next month’s TM backup. Hope that helps.
@emranmdeАй бұрын
@@macStudioA thanks for your reply. Of course it is helpful. Your first answer, you mention if I lost SSD then I have to create another back up, If I lose/damage ssd there is no way to get it back from TM, I would think?

Can you use a crucial x9 pro ssd usbc with a 2020 m1 macbook air or will that be too slow?
@macStudioA2 ай бұрын
Found Thunderbolt 4 to be faster than any USB-C. Again, personal opinion. Besides Thunderbolt 4 consideration, depends what NVMe being used, some slower than others, and that affects speed tremendously. Hope that helps.

Hello I do not understand why you made that guide without explaining what people have to do your command does not work, your guide is not complete, and Apple users have full problems in their heads....
@macStudioA2 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear you’re having problems/issues. Firstly; I can assure you that over the past 3-weeks I have used exact commands as in video and in description several times and it does indeed work. Secondly; in the description there’s a link direct to Apple about how to use the bootable USB. If you’re still having issues, then contact Apple Support on X and they will be able to help. Hope that helps.

Can I format as APFS? External drive?
@macStudioA2 ай бұрын
The macOS installers from Mojave and up should always do APFS conversion automatically behind the scenes. In other words it does not matter, or if you want to make sure then by all means format as APFS. Hope that helps✌🏼
