I think it comes to also what kind of paintings you want to paint. I started out with acrylics because I like how vibrant and mat the colors are. I like to paint mainly in an illustration way. I just started oil yesterday and I did find it very relaxing because it never dries and you can’t do really do mistakes as it’s very easy to correct. However it’s hard to do the kind of illustration I love so now am gonna mix both. For example do the background in acrylic, let it dry and paint my funny characters in oil and really have fun with it. I am a bit hyper so the drying part with acrylics was always very stressful for me. Can that work? Thank you for a great video!

Oh dear. Fast drying is bad for learning, you say. I just bought gouache to learn with.

I thought Rembrandt oil paint is of higher quality but it smells really bad in comparison to other oil paints such as Schmincke Norma, for instance.
@pinkmuffin9842Ай бұрын
That is how society works: More people have the resources to do something; therefore the chances of someone becoming superb at that thing are higher. The overall quality of paintings might be lower now (because there is more technically bad art because more people get to do art) but if you go to the extremes, the quality has risen.

The title and what the video tries to communicate; are things that are a bit incongruent. Clearly an ad and I do not have an issue with that. If the foundation for this being a myth is really "people lack skills therefore they do not make as much income" Then I am not convinced. I can agree with such a statement to some degree, you will make more money if you have more skill there is a correlation there. But a bunk of your analysis feels wilfully short sighted for sake of supporting your service. The first two point don't really seem to be points as to why it is a myth but supporting reasons to the core idea that "you are starving because you are not good enough" It would have been more of a convincing video towards this end if you just flat out said this and went to show how important it is to increase your skills.(it's already directly supported by point 2) That is something with more gravity, personally. Point 3 is what where I take the most issue with. Essentially the foundation of taking the national average, is a big issue at step 1. Reason being there is a discrepancy between hourly and salary wages. Using this avg doesn't paint a good picture for how much money artists are making and if they are really better off. While it is true that they can have mobility with income, this is painfully short sided for a few reasons. We are using the framework of hourly wage meaning obviously this is freelance. Using the national average where a good portion of this income is calculated by people who are employed *salary* a wage compensation type that disregards the hour framework. (you can work less or over, and it does not impact your wage) So it's clearly a flawed way to compare. The average commission price is a good way to reinforce the idea of skill corelating to income, the main point of this video. But of course, the blindsight of 1. not showing that comparing wages from freelance isn't the same as wages from salary (as you should know when you are self-employed at 60k a year, you are taking home far less compared to 60k employed. Being taxed as an employee and as an employer is a big hit. Then on top of missing out on benefits that you would not need to pay on your own. But of course, are tax write offs and similar for self-employed). 2. This assumes, like salary work, you are getting work at a steady or fixed rate. What difference does it make if you are not getting that type of large commission at a regular bias. while I know you say, "I am not saying your week is not going to be filled with work" But as a freelancer we all know of the month-to-month natural variance of this field, which is critical because it further drives down the real avg income you will make. This on top of my previous point can drop you back down to avg you first compared to. The line of "even surpassing the us avg income" holds less weight when adjusted. This might seem like nitpicking or being pedantic, but I am willing to accept that for I know how important it is to not mislead people who are looking to make this their career. There is way too much bad information that leads prospective artists astray.

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback, @xmcxii! I appreciate your insights, especially regarding the comparison between freelance work and salaried income. You’re right-freelancing comes with its own set of challenges, from inconsistent work to the added burden of taxes and missing benefits. While it’s not an easy path, it is one that artists can navigate successfully, which was the core message I was trying to get across in this video. :) I also hear you about the video’s alignment with the title. My aim was to demonstrate how skill development can increase earning potential, but you’re right that the analysis could be expanded with more depth and clarity. Thanks again for your constructive criticism-it really helps us improve our videos and create more valuable content for artists. I hope you’ll keep sharing your thoughts!

I totally agree. I have always admired people who can paint with acrylics. In my case, the temptation of speed always ended in endless corrections, and chasing changing colors on the canvas. It seems to me that oil also simply looks better right out of the box, more organic, while acrylics have something plastic about them. It takes great skill to be able to achieve results with acrylics similar to oil paints.
